If you could name a horse

I've named a few but none of them have been very spectacular:o there was Pickle, a little dun who we named because his mane was multicoloured, a ride and drive we called Big Bess, poor girl:o Nutmeg, no idea why but i just liked it at the time.
My daughter got to name her pony, the breeder likes to have the foals name begin with the same name as the Dams so it had to begin with A, daughter chose Aero lol:D she says next one we have can we call it Crunchie lol:rolleyes:

Have had some fun naming dogs and other animals, currently have a dog called H, that causes the vets receptionist a headache as it 'upsets her computer' lol,

My first pony was pickles :D I called him pix or picallili at home, and 'In a Pickle' for showname :D I couldn't have asked for a better pony to teach me and to keep me safe :D I miss him :D

I don't think I'd ever do affiliated, I'd only be interested in hacking and light endurance. ^^

Perhaps I could have:
Official name 'passport name'
Show name
Stable name

Oh now I like that idea, I could steal that for ben.

His stable name is Ben/Benney
His naughty name is BENJAMIN!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::rolleyes:
His Passport name is Ben Nevis
His show name would be Hosking's Mad Moment...

Because OH being a farmer never ever parts with cash unless for farm machinery and he bought him for me for christmas

So far I have named one! Her show/passport name is Hao Spirited (pronounced How). I have been reliabably informed Hao means always in Native American. Her sire is Sempers Sprit, so wanted something to carry on that name. It also suits her as she is skewbaled! Her stable name is Celeste. I have no idea why I came up with it, but as soon as she was born, it popped into my head and stuck!

My mare is in foal again, Her posh name is Miss Mills, and the stallion is Future Illusion. I've decided the show/passport name will be Future Millions! If the foal is a filly I want to call it Daphnie (sp?) so I have Daphnie and Celeste! (showing my age now!)

Shall I fetch the smelling salts? :D

The highland has multiple names for different competitions:

stable name: Fergie / Fergie / Fergles/ etc
passport name: Upperlochton Fergus
unaff competition name: Sound & Fury for dressage / jumping / anything where I write his name on the form
Fergie if I have to tell them what his name is (e.g. gymkhanas!)
Upperlochton Fergus for showing...

And "you b*****d" when he's being a git :)

Mine would either be...Bubbles, Marlin or Nemo..but more Bubbles as you can alway's then quote Finding Nemo..

'Bubbles! My bubbles, bubbles, bubbles...My Bubbles.'

Well, I'm really into Sci Fi and fantasy, so my names would be something related to that.:)
For mares I like Nostromo and Sulaco (spaceships from Alien and Aliens respectively, but also from an old book).
For a gelding, Sith Lord, or Arrakis or Muad'Dib (from Dune).:)

Norse Mythology is also full of great potential horse names, for example Yggdrasill (the World Tree, but also sometimes translated as Odin's Horse:)), Asgard, Midgard, Loki etc.:D

At work we have a big black gelding, I wanted to call him Necronomicon (The Book of the Dead, slightly macabre, but I love the sound of the word:o), but he ended up with Gladys Street instead, which is a blimmin' girls name.

I have 'posh named' both of my horses. They both have the prefix 'Fools' because both are born on the same day, 1st April, albeit 14 years apart!

I would love to own another dun, who I would like to call 'Gone N Dun it Now'. !!

Riot..... So when I fell off I could run after it screaming 'Riot! Help!! RIOT!'. And see people's reactions ; )

Oh my god, I just had a really bad taste moment.... If I were to do that I would call my horse Tsunami, mind you, for a mare, that could be shortened to Sue or Mi-Mi, but Tsunami, would have been a good name for Ebony in her wild days!:D

Working at a stud i've had my say in a few names!

This years foals were William - born a couple days after the royal wedding and his dam's name means 'black queen'. His posh name is 'Totil Platinum', as voted for by h and h and BD facebookers.
Wanda, came up with her posh name first 'De Wunderbar', her dam's name begins with a W and we wanted something german. Wanda was the obvious stable name.
James, again came up with posh name first. Sire is San Amour, so we were playing around with places begining with 'San', I looked on google and saw 'San Tiano', liked the name and it means Saint James so James it was.

Though it was rather amusing walking down to the boys and calling James and William, couldn't help but do it in a posh accent!

I used to give all of mine names from characters in films. I had a Cooler King Hilts (Hilts) from The Great Escape, a Jimmy Malone (Malone) (from The Untouchables) a Randle P McMurphy (Mac) From One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and a Clarice Starling (Starling) from The Silence of the Lambs. I was hoping for a chance to use Atticus Finch, but it hasn't come yet.
PF is actually called Charlie Big Potato (nothing to do with me) which is the name of a song (Skunk Anansie) She was Christened Papa Frita (which means fried potato= chip/crisp) by the grooms here who couldn't get their head round her full name... I thought it was funny and kept it.
LC is called Partagas (a kind of cigar) as his dad's name is Habano (Also a cigar)

im a fence judge at the local riding club, we get some lovely names on the entry list, some of the ones that i like (that i can remember!) are-

samuel whiskers
ruby walsh (yes, really! i want to name a horse Tony McCoy now)
The pie
weve also had one that sounded like micha-mantosh or something

my all time favourite wasnt a horse, it was a competitor called yo-yo farmer day
might have been a joke though loll

Yes, you're right, Sleipnir IS Odin's eight legged horse, but the literal translation of Yggdrasill is Odin's Horse/Steed (Ygg = another name for Odin, drasill = horse).:)
Confusing, isn't it? Especially if you also consider that the (male) god Loki is Sleipnir's 'mother'.

Well I didn't know that was the literal translation of Yggdrasil... Most interesting!

I've always found the concept of Loki as Sleipnir's mother hilarious though - I mean really... That's quite impressive - even for a shapeshifter :D
