What would you call it?

I've always been hugely interested in names, so when I finally get my own, naming will be very exciting for me! (As of yet, I've not been able to name any of my animals ¬¬)

I will name my horse..

Show Name: Battle Royale (My favourite movie)
Stable Name (either): Nanahara, Kiriyama, Hiiro, Akira or Fang.

I need to find a "proper" name for the foal my mare is expecting. I feel we need to include at least some of her "family" names as well as the sire's.

So have a go with this lot: She's called Georgieanna Best, by Best of the Bests out of Polish Abbey and is a litte chestnut TB. He is a heavyweight homozygous cob called Amadeus, meaning resultant foal will be coloured.

So far I think my favourite is Best Beloved - pullling in her and her sire plus the love bit from him.

Stable name will be entirely dependent on how the foal is when it's here. I always think names evolve when you know the animal (or human!).

I love the name Tiger Lilly! So pretty :)

I forgot mares names! I am after a gelding 100%, but if I find my perfect horse in a mare, I'm not going to turn her down.

Show Name: Kyokugenshinri Kaisekisho (Means Battle Royale in Japanese :P)
Stable Name: Sakura.

However, I do have other names lined up, just incase they don't fit for whatever reason.

Show: Grip Fast (My family's motto)
Stable: Bartolf (Man who started the motto)

Show: Sayonara Kitsune
Stable: Skit

Just something I do when I'm bored :P

Well, I named a horse once (sort of)- he came to the yard as "B@5t@rd" (I'm guessing if I wrote it properly it would be filtered out) and I changed it to Sparky..

OP, problem with choosing foreign names, especially Japanese ones, is that nobody will ever be able to pronounce them properly. Or, you might come across someone with better knowledge of the language who might point out grammatical errors or something (although I guess going by stereotypes, the Japanese might be too polite to do so. I'm paranoid about foreign language grammar though so you may ignore me). Eg, my friend Nagisa, should be pronounced as na-gi-sa, but mostly she gets Na-GISA. Anyway, I suppose as long as you are happy, that's the main thing.

I'm hopefully getting a pup soon and I really want to give it a Dutch name, but concerned about potential pronunciation problems for other people ;) I don't know how people would attempt to pronounce something like Meisje or Nijntje without guidance.

I did

I called him micah and 'Minor Miracle' as his show name as his real name was 'minor'

previous one was called Beacon so I called him 'Blazing Beacon'

Sheep: I'm alright with Japanese words and names, but it's Chinese that I can't fathom! I've dated several Chinese men and I've always had to call them by they're "english" names >.< Yer Ming, being the hardest one. Ming was fine, but the accent on Yer was very very weird! I just called him AJ :P
No wonder Jackie Chan changed his name, Chan Kong-Sang is actually pretty difficult to pronouce!

When I get my black 18hh shire (when!!? ;) ) I'm calling him "Strider" show name Aragorn.
Obviously after Aragorn from lord of the rings but also He-man's horse was called Stridor.

My filly is nearly 5 months old... I have called her Harper - still not 100% certain of it! I wanted something related to her mum Angel - her show name is Angel's Halo, and we came up with Angel's & Harps so she is Harper.... I had lots of names for a colt - Troy or Cruise! But Filly names none seemed to suit her - If anyone has any ideas let me know as Harper still isn't sticking!! She is liver chestnut with a white blaze & 3 white stockings!

I always wanted a showjumper called Mr Tumnus after the fawn in 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe'. But ben was already named when I got him. However, I would just love a horse with the show names:

Credit Crunch or Recession :D:D:D

I'm sure you'd be fine with it, it would be other people I'd worry about ;)

I love the name Sakura, but would warn you against chosing shownames that are hard for the judges/commentators to pronounce (they have enough trouble with english:D and its just frustrating and a little bit embarrasing for the rider when they can't get it right. I personally like plain old 'Battle Royale' :D

Not that i'll ever get to choose a name but I'm always drawn to celestial or star names , I really like Andromeda - which I think may be galaxy ? When I was small , I always thought that when horses died they became stars , which is why when I lost my old mare , I had a star named after her , she's in the official NASA book as Perran Willow - may seem sad I know , but when i'm out with the dogs late at night , I am always looking up at the stars - makes me smile - sorry went on a bit of a ramble...

my newest is Rhea dargon, black welsh sec d, Isabella star also a sec d, my friesian isis swanbloome, my warmblood avacardo. Hopefully my next will be another friesian, but it wont be for awhile yet.

Sorry sheep, didn't see I was basically reitterating what you said :D

Just going to your first paragraph though, it reminded me of a friend who had a TB called lady. She was called 'Lady Marmalade' but my friend always said that if she ever changed it, it would be to: 'Pack-it-in-you-effing-b it ch' because that was what she was always saying to her hot toed loopy mare :D

I hasten to add that she was very much loved:D:D

Haha, well B****** was also known as Dirty Onion for a while- it really suited him actually, he was a pig ugly fat psycho pony (lots of fun!) but it wasn't really suitable for a riding school pony.. oh, and he had a moustache..

yeah, I wouldn't really want to be saying 'Yer ming' you my OH that much either:eek::rolleyes::D

When I get mine I think I'd like to call him Hercules! I like the idea of a big cobby type called hurcules who is really a gentle giant! Show name maybe something along the lines of Herculean Effort or something like that! Haha! :)

I don't think thats sad, I really like that idea, seems very comforting to me :D

I have a bay cob mare with a big blaze called, boringly, Blaze, when I got her, and I HATED it! But, six years later, she is still Blaze and now I wouldn't change it. Her show name is Beltane Blaze. My youngster is called Jasmine, she was a surprise foal from a rescued mare, foaled on Christmas day, and jasmine was growing in my mother's garden at the time. Her show name is Erin's Gift, as her mother's name was Erin,(she had to be pts when Jas was 12 weeks old.)
Re the hard to pronounce names: I have a Golden Retriever called Caoimhe, a Gaelic name pronounced Keeva, and no one can pronounce or spell it! At the vet's they call out
"Coom-ha??" and it is a PITA having to keep telling people, lol!!

I quite like the classical names like Herculese, Titan, Zeus, particularly for big strapping horse. I think lord of the rings had a good suplly of names everything from Gandalf the grey (that would have to be a big grey ISH) to ponies - Pippin, Samwise, etc.

I also quite like horses with human names - Simon, Steve and Vera would all be good horse names.
