If you could name a horse

I love the name Sakura, but would warn you against chosing shownames that are hard for the judges/commentators to pronounce (they have enough trouble with english:D and its just frustrating and a little bit embarrasing for the rider when they can't get it right. I personally like plain old 'Battle Royale' :D

Hehe yea, I'd love to see them pronouce Kyokugenshinri Kaisekisho! I can just about. I only do little local shows, so they'd probably say "Emily's horse with the silly name" but I suppose if I get my own, I may want to branch out a bit :P

Paddy Irish: I love celestial names too! My brother's a star geek and knows a lot of the names, they're all fantastic! It's not sad at all, naming a star after your mare, I think it's brilliant :) The best way to remember her! A real life version of The Lion King!

Re the hard to pronounce names: I have a Golden Retriever called Caoimhe, a Gaelic name pronounced Keeva, and no one can pronounce or spell it! At the vet's they call out
"Coom-ha??" and it is a PITA having to keep telling people, lol!!

Yeah, Irish names can be quite troublesome- luckily I'm from that island so not a problem for me but I can imagine poor Caoimhe being called by all kinds of names!

I have this weird thing that I can't name an animal until I've got to know it. So I couldn't say "I'll get a horse and call it ....". Mollie was called Marti when I got her, and I wanted something sweet and unpretentious which sounded similar to Marti. But I didn't refer to her as Mollie until she'd arrived and settled and I was sure she "is" a Mollie!

When my daughter was born, I felt odd about giving her a name. It's the only time in your life you meet another human and don't ask them what their name is! Seems a bit of a cheek. ;)

I did! I called my little girl Dakota (Dixie) - she's a Quarter horse so she needed an american name :)

Although that's not what I ever imagined calling a horse when I was younger. I really wanted a bay or liver chestnut to call Phoenix, but when I brought my girl home it just didn't fit her, but Dixie really does.

That's how I am, and though I wouldn't deliberately change the name of a horse I do find they change over time. My newest lad was Alfie when he turned up but is now normally called Schmoo.

Not that i'll ever get to choose a name but I'm always drawn to celestial or star names , I really like Andromeda - which I think may be galaxy ? When I was small , I always thought that when horses died they became stars , which is why when I lost my old mare , I had a star named after her , she's in the official NASA book as Perran Willow - may seem sad I know , but when i'm out with the dogs late at night , I am always looking up at the stars - makes me smile - sorry went on a bit of a ramble...

Haha! I named my Welshie Celestial Star - thisis her registered name! her stable name is Luna which i also foudn very pretty, but wasn't why we chose it! Basically we were stood looking at her as a 2-3 day old, whizzing round her mum like a mad thing, whilst trying to think of names and my OH said how about Luna, short for Luna-tic!!!! It stuck

Thinking about it, I'm glad I didn't get to name any animals when I was younger. I was awful and would have ended up with something stupid XD
I know Asian names are not the most common for horses, but I do think some are very pretty! I also love African names :D
Farasi (Means horse), Ajo, Sambu and of course Simba and Nala :P

Yoshibo is a fun name too :P not sure if it's a real name or not though (I misheard a name and thought it was fun)
Also Dorian, Florian, and Erasmus!

I quite like the classical names like Herculese, Titan, Zeus, particularly for big strapping horse. I think lord of the rings had a good suplly of names everything from Gandalf the grey (that would have to be a big grey ISH) to ponies - Pippin, Samwise, etc.

I also quite like horses with human names - Simon, Steve and Vera would all be good horse names.

Yes, I'd love to name a little welsh or welsh x arab show pony 'The Prancing Pony' after the pub in the lord of the rings :D

Just off topic (you know as I do!) I'm an Emily too :D

Hehe! Nice to know there's others with my name :D (Common, but still!) I wonder how many Leslie's (surnames) there are here! and I wonder if they know the wonderful history behind it.
(May start a thread about it, plenty of fun equestrian things!)

I wouldn't actually trust myself to give anything a decent name.. I have a dog called Mr Turnips

I just wouldn't trust you, full stop.

My dog is named daisy after a cow, and my other dogs are archie, lexie and gilly from the monarch of the glen, well I couldn't bring myself to name Gilly, Golly, but since the character Golly is a Gilly we decided to name him Gilly... Following? :D

^^Anyway, my point is all solid trustworthy names^^^

But Mr Turnips, how hasn't he been eaten:eek::eek::eek:

I'm not sure I'd trust anyone who admits to watching Monarch of the Glen...;):D

I named a calf Emily once. I'd looked after her while I was on holiday on my uncle's farm, but as soon as I left, they re-named her after me. :(

Actually, up until the mid 1990s it was fairly uncommon, by the time I started secondary school I had only met 2 other people with my name. It wasn't until I was working at mothercare when I was 17 ('97) that I started hearing other people screeching my name! From 95 onwards it spent many years in the top 5 girls names, but at least we can rest assured that when our parents gave us the name it was NOT common :D

I agree with the parents screeching names at their kids! When I worked at Poundland, I accidently told a lady, who was screaming "EMILY! EMILY!! HURRY THE F UP!!" if she could just wait one moment, as my hands were full. Turns out she was talking to her little kid. Nice!!

Didn't know it was uncommon in the early 90's :O There were SO many around here!

:eek::eek: but its wonderful and quirky and scottish *whispers - and there are kilts:rolleyes:*

Aww bless
My cousin named her labrador Emily, I'm not sure whether she was trying to tell me she thought I was a *coughs* 'canine':eek: or whether it was the strength of love, loyalty and dependability of the Lab that reminded her of me, although come to think of it my cousin and I never got on and the dog used to always run away:D

Yes, I'd love to name a little welsh or welsh x arab show pony 'The Prancing Pony' after the pub in the lord of the rings :D

Me too :D That would be awesome :D

I always wanted a Beowulf... I may have ear marked that name for a certain yearling though now  :D

I named Jasper - he was called Curly when I bought him, which was just awful. I thought about changing Fergie's but he just is a "Fergus" really. I wasn't sure about Darach at first either but it really grew on me.

I'm not sure I should be allowed to name animals though. Really, my dog's called Toby (fine, but less ok when I confess he's really named after a doctor on Casualty ) shortened to DT (Daily Telegraph). Over the years I've had some awfully named small animals too - Gaz and Daz the roborovski hamsters were probably a low point...

I have had gerbils called Merry and Pippin though :D And I named my bike Shadowfax :o

AWESOME :D

I love Monarch of the Glen :o I've also had an Archie AND I called a rat Hector (his buddy was Hamish, in reference to Hamish Macbeth, which I also love :o).

Strictly speaking, Golly was a ghillie or gillie though not a gilly ;) :D

Also called Emily :) aha. Id love a horse cALLED Sephiroth, because I'm a massive gamer and have loved Final Fantasy nearly as long as I have been riding :P. However I've just got a horse called Kalyeigh(yes spelt right). We've also got Azam and god knows where that's from but I really like it as a name.

My yearling's registered name is Minerva I Giorni. All my ponies have Minerva in their registered name, and I Giorni is after a piece of music. His stable name is Harold, after my late grandfather, he was born the day before what would have been my grandfather's 85th birthday. If he had been a filly his stable name would have been Homily or Arietty after one of the Borrowers because he was tiny, he was 6hh when he was born :D

I've always wanted to make a commentator read out ''Next competitor, S. Smith riding For The First And Last Time.'' :D

^ utter genius!

I'm currently a fan of my mares current name "Jedi Knightmare" however at our first show with a lot of friends watching when our name was read out the crowd was given a rather bad rendition of the Darth Vader theme
Her stable name has nothing to do with it (Miro- after some obscure artist).

I've always liked names that are a bit out there for horses- but not too odd.

OK, We need DNA matching over here!!! Query split at birth!!!

I always wanted a Dun, so I could call it:

The Dun Deal

And I would have loved a filly foal from ebony and to call it The Devils Daughter :D:D

P.S. JFTD vvv look down there vvv you are now in my signature:D emblazoned there forever, nawwwww:o

I like my mare's full name which is Lidanzia...I called her Dan which is now Dani as so many people thought she must be a boy! But Dan just seemed to work for me! She was called Lily when i got her even though she is black!!
Always said if I could name my next girlie animal it will be Grace...I just love that name.
I loved the name a foal was given once that I knew...Ernie...it was fab calling out Ernie and this huge elegant chestnut would come over!!!
someone I know is considering calling their horse Rhubarb Lad as he just keeps on growing!

It is a bit worrying isn't it? I actually have two duns - and I did consider using "dun" in my 5 year olds show name in that manner, but it's really common round here :( So I settled on Sound&Fury because when we compete it does seem to become "a tale told by an idiot (me!) full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" :D And Macbeth is appropriate for a highlander.

I like the Devil's Daughter :D I call all mine Diavolo when they're acting like Satan himself

:D I think I need to create a signature now... :D
