What would you say?!

Lately my riding feels absoutley shocking, but the more I try to correct things the more I cock up

and it's just one awful vicious circle

I've taken to shutting my eyes thought trot-canter transitions so that I can just concentrate on the 'feel'

, among other silly remedies! Glueing my gloves to my reins at an approriate length is the next step to try and cure my chronic 'long rein syndrome'!

This leads me to pronounce my riding style lately as being 'PARALYSIS BY ANALYSIS'

What's yours?

i am so paranoid about it too! i am always analysing myself, and tend to very critical!

i am a quiet rider but sometimes tend to be too quiet, and let horses get away with all sorts. then i'll blow my top and they dont be naughty again for a looooong time! when that happens i tend to scare my instructor too lol

Hee hee, my trainer says I get bogged down with my look and style, she says I want to be all pretty all the time,

My riding style is

'PRETTY INEFFECTIVE'

I feel like my riding is getting worse

I am far too negative for my own good so I am probably over reacting, the other day I was riding a lovely little mare on a circle for several minutes but people kept getting in my way and me being me put it down to me not looking where I was going and getting in the way. I am also thinking that I am now just sat on a horse and not able to work or feel their movement correctly.......just hope I am having a bad week and tomorrow's lesson will prove me wrong.

LMAO! I love the comments I get which go along the lines of 'you ride her very tactfully'.... I think that is blatently code for being completely ineffective!
I want to be a rider and not just a passenger, dammit!

According to my riding instructor the other week I'm between 'consciously bad' and 'consciously good'. Apparently I started off as subconsciously bad - not bad exactly just had got into a few bad habits that I didn't really notice anymore. I'm now fully aware of everything I do wrong and working on correcting it but I still have to think sometimes about the 'right' way to do things. I'm aiming for subconsciously good but doubt it will ever happen

Very one-sided so:

Right-rein is right, left-leg has left.

I'm using plaiting bands on my reins to make sure I have them the correct length most of the time. It's more discrete than gluing on gloves...

I can't that comment on most of my tests

i know its a horrible thing to say......sort of..........but im glad im not the only person who thinks they are crap, and is probably overreacting very very much!

i haven't had a lesson on Frankie for ages so methinks its time for one on him, see if what im doing is correct!

Well, I'm eyeing up some bright yellow electric tape to put around my reins at the relevant point, I don't think plaiting bands would be subtle enough!

Gluing my gloves to the reins is the ultimate solution though, will be good when we get to 'free walk on a long rein', I'll be collapsing down his neck!

cr*p??!

I am too nice, if George shakes his head or resists a bit I think 'oh I must be hurting him' and relax the rein, yet when my instructor is there and says 'don't let him get away with that' I don't and he goes much better. Will I ever learn?!

Oh dear all these negatives. Come on guys you cant be that bad riders. I know how you feel though i have off days when i think i should'nt have a horse because i cant ride. Dont laugh but i have been watching alot of dressage recently and it has given me more confidence when im schooling! Dont ask me why but i just feel better about schooling after i have watched it.

Try the green and yellow electric tape! So bright you have to improve or die of embarrasment hacking. However I did find my reins had stretched assimetrically (sp) so I was almost off the hook.
PS> Bounty, youre a polo/x person arent you? Any help to find rope gag cheeks? Plz.

I have just started regular lessons at a great local riding school. OMG...... having been a happy hacker for the last 10 years, I've picked up some shocking habits, am really quite crooked and am having a riot learning to ride again. When I learnt 25 + years ago it was very different plus I learnt with showjumpers...this instructor is a dressage rider. Her horses are very well trained and if you prees the wrong buttons you look very silly

I would sum up my riding style as sympathetic but not particularly stylish...yet
smile.gif

okay... i'm very self-aware. i'm central and precise and even in my contact. my seat's pretty good i hope, and my leg position's not bad. that's the good bits out of the way.
my shoulders are terrible. apparently i have very large shoulder blades for a woman (?!), i find it impossible to get them back enough, without feeling like a chicken trussed up ready for the oven, so i look a bit round-shouldered.
frown.gif

i have to work very hard not to look down. very bad habit, pulls my head forward and upsets whole head-neck-spine balance.
my left (dominant leg) gets tighter than my right, especially the thigh. i really try to keep it relaxed but it doesn't always do as it's told. ggrrr.
so, i'd say i'm consciously competent, and fairly effective, but still very frustrated that i'm not as good as i want to be.

I am fantastic, perfect in fact, I don't know why I bother riding as theres nothing to improve upon
grin.gif

Seriously, I spend the majority of my time on my gelding shaking with nerves, not so bad on my mare, I can look pretty but not stylish if that makes sense. I can make my horses go but god knows about anybody elses!
ETA I meant go 'backwards' on the mare

My riding is rubbish, but since all I do is potter around the fields it doesn't really matter. I ride at the buckle and don't use my legs, but it works for us (most of the time
