Pointless post, really, as it will certainly not be happening any time soon but OH has given the go ahead to have a second dog once we've moved house. :)

We met the other mad husky couple recently at the park and Dax had a whale of a time playing on the long line with their big male and his rescue collie companion. As we were leaving OH gave a resigned sigh and said "we'll have to get another one to keep her company, won't we?" :D :D

I've pressed for details and we've agreed that we'll look to move next summer, once I'm done with my second year of uni and have a few stress-free months in which to view houses and get everything shifted, and we'll be looking for somewhere with a big secure garden. It'll be a bit of a task, given that we rent, but not impossible I hope.

So, question is - another husky, or something else? The thought of walking two of the buggers on long lines fills me with horror, especially if we get one from the Husky Welfare Assoc. as it's likely to be as much of a terror as madam was when she first arrived, plus I don't want her to regress and go feral again. :p But equally if we got another working-type dog of a similar size (big collie, GSD?) I don't suppose I could work it in harness to the same extent as I plan to with Daxy?

I'm getting so far ahead of myself but I'm really pleased. :D

In other news, yesterday she played very nicely with a golden retriever and - joy of joys - recalled immediately off'f it when I whistled, at a distance of 50ft. :eek: Shame later that day she went after a squirrel, got the line wrapped around my leg and skinned it for me... (leg, not squirrel :p).
 
GSD GSD GSD. Get something you can actually train :p :D

You can of course work a GSD in harness, KarynK's sister has a lovely girl from working lines giving the huskies a run for their money :D
 
Needless to say I second the GSD proposal. You're already half way there as you have a certain GSDs legs in the background in your siggy pictures, just getting you used to the idea gradually.:p

It's fate, clearly! :p

Having something trainable will be really novel, I'm used to doing 30-40 reps over several days or even weeks to establish new behaviours, getting results from more like 5-10 reps will be bliss. I was just concerned about soundness issues with regards running in harness, huskies are constructed for this sort of thing but I wasn't sure if GSD conformation lends itself to pulling? It would just be a shame to leave one at home while we go hooning round the woods, then again with two pulling the bike I'd have to uprate my brakes. :eek:

Got a long time to think about it yet, anyway, just excited and pleased for madam as she will be much happier with a friend. :) And hopefully another year will see her obedience increase too and then it won't all go to pot when I introduce another mad young dog.
 
As I just said - KarynK's sister has a GSD working in harness.
Cyrus can tell you of lots of GSDs working in harness.
Go into FB and look at my pictures from shows. Of course they are built to pull :p
The movement of the GSD is directed from the rear, like a BMW and they make excellent harness dogs.

I am training my dog for the AD, 20k off a bike. I would have no issues about his soundness for the job.
 
I had no worries about running over distance, just concerned with actual weight bearing - I'm not as small as I used to be and my off-road bike is steel so not the lightest - then again, I'm looking into getting an aluminium scooter so between the two of them weight shouldn't be an issue anyway. :) You can tell me I told you so in three years time when they prove to be so good in a team that I end up wrapped around a tree at high speed.

If they're rear wheel drive like BMWs, are they cr*p in snow? ;) :p
 
No they are good weight bearers and I actually expect and demand to be borne uphill most days :p
Like I say, take a look at my most recent photo album and you'll see what I mean.

They're good in snow, but, as mentioned ad nauseum, not slippy green indoor show carpets :p
 
I can't imagine a spangle would do well in harness, especially a very little one, it'd be suspended by the harness by big sister Daxie and bowled along at speed. :D

Cyrus, it's taken me six months to establish even the most basic behaviours with one sibe, another would kill me. :p I'm still nursing my skinned ankle, lots of weird fluid coming out of it... I love her to bits and I knew what I was in for when she came home but a second dog would have to be one which is reliable off-lead, if only for the sake of my ankles. :o

I know a springer that runs in harness with 2 sibes ;)

By the time next dog comes home you`ll have Daxys manners spot on and she should help you teach new doggy the house rules mine did anyway lol

Oh and if your moving move nearer me :D
 
Lies, a new dog will just make her regress into adolescent misbehaviour and then I'll have double the hooning to deal with. :p :D

Sadly I am obliged to stay within an hour's commute of Wolverhampton (:o) for another two years else I'd be camping on your doorstep already. :p

She's all grown up now! I shall go and measure her to be sure, but at 24.5kg she must have grown a little bit taller. :D

ETA: 24.5" ground to withers. :eek:

Methinks the breed standard for huskies must be out of date, she's the smallest of all the ones I've met so far and is still two kilos and two inches taller than what she ought to be. It'd lend weight to the fact that she might be a cross except that the big male from up the road (definitely 100% sibe) is even taller and weighs 30kg. :eek:

He'd just have to move his legs twice as fast. :D

Not out of date just a hell of a lot of not so good breeders deviating away from the standard

i have my own mutant (as i call him) same height as Dax but 6kg heavier
