This is Rufus

71733449-096C-4FC2-8D53-BE247F3A60DA.jpeg

Rufus is mainly known as Mr Rufus or Roo but is often referred to as the most handsomest boy in the world EVER :)

Rufus’ route to me was slightly complicated in that I first met him on the day he was in the vets to be castrated when he came for a massive fuss and cuddle. He had been surrendered to rescue due to his owner’s change in circumstances but it became obvious (fairly quickly) that he hadn’t had the best life and he was incredibly nervous, which over time developed into aggression.

He was however rehomed but came back 6 weeks later an absolute quivering wreck of a dog. The chap that rehomed him figured shouting and physical punishment were justifiable training aids. His name was shared with several hundred rescue centres so he could never rehome a dog again.

Anyway, this left Rufus an aggressive mess, for want of a better word. Only a select few of the kennel staff could get near him and potential adopters were put off the moment they clapped eyes on him. He hadn’t forgotten me however and still loved cuddles and fuss and when out of his kennel, would just sit on my feet!! He did stay in kennels a while longer as I already had Clyde, Buddy and Benji at home and wasn’t sure I really wanted a 4th boy!!

The rest, as they say, is history and he eventually came home and he’s lived with me 10 years now. He was not to be trusted with most people in the early years and I had to ask everyone not to look at him or touch him. Today is a different story and he’s a very friendly chap.

Rufus is as loyal a dog as you can find. I do declare if I jumped off a cliff, he would probably be right behind me. He would however leave me in a heartbeat for his Auntie Alison and never look back. When he first came into rescue, Alison picked him up and he latched onto her and still adores her to this day :)

He turned 13 in March this year and is as fit as a flea, apart from these darn vestibular events. Hopefully we’re on top of them now, fingers crossed.

Hunter (sable) and Cooper (blue Merle). Both rough collies, albeit Cooper was from smooth breeding. Both veteran boys now, unsure where that time went? Hunter is far too dignified for nicknames but Cooper has spent most of his life as Coops. Named as when he was a pup his Merle markings looked like Alice Cooper’s clockwork orange makeup. Both stand up members of the community, and both routinely disgusted with their recent stumpy legged counterparts high spirited behaviour. Hunter is a very finicky soul, and Cooper is very sensitive (emotionally) and ends up sulking a lot—but he is a playdough dog.

Ginny, triccolour corgi youngster. 10 months and undeniably the boss. Exceptionally cheeky to live with, but irreplaceable. Seldom known by such name, always Gin (which she was named after as someone told me I’d give her a ridiculous name, and asked why dogs weren’t called brandy or whisky anymore to which I pointed out I didn’t drink either) or Pig (anyone who’s had a corgi will know why). Strangely she answers to both but never her real name. Sometimes answers to none of them, it’s a corgi girl thing I think!

Is it wrong to want a breed of dog just for it’s cute ears?

(Not really, George is enough, I’d never manage a corgi too! ?)
Her ears are one of my favourite things about her, as weird as that sounds. We’ve always had a mix of big ones and little ones, primarily working bred terriers as the latter....I had done my years of waiting at the entrance of rabbit holes and fox dens by the time the small dog vacancy came up in the household, so wanted something small, with character and lots of ‘big dog’ qualities. She fits the bill. Maybe a bit too much character at times! Her favourite past time is marching around like a Sherman tank and being bossy.

I'm desperate for another Corgi ? Jack spent most of his life ignoring his own name unless I had something (food) he wanted. It's amazing how obedient he became for sausages ?

Sounds very familiar. I still find seeing the ears twitch despite the rest of the dog ignoring you, the most entertainingly infuriating thing in the world. Her loyalty is unrivalled though. She’s not an in your face type dog which works for me, yet she will quite literally shove a toy in your hand if you ignore attempts at playing (given the current climate I find I have earned myself quite a reputation working from home and using Microsoft teams to video conference, with tennis balls and teddies coming flying into the screen)

I had earmarked the breed several years ago, but thought no more about it as like three as a number. I lost our youngest dog to illness, way before his time, and after the grieving process then started to look into breeders. My specification was a moderate type, tri colour bitch—she became available the morning of the day I made contact with a breeder to go on a waiting list, after Being reserved since birth. Still can’t decide if that was an act of God, or an act of a much more malevolent force.

I often find myself saying to people they are very much a ‘dog person’ breed as weird as it sounds. You’ve got to really get them. They like to be dirty, like to do things, like to play and be involved, can sometimes be a bit smelly (her gas rivals the most pungent of hound) and are just very ‘doggy’

thank you. The roughs are basically sight hounds in fur overcoats anyway. Especially the blue boy, he’s very sighthound in his temperament....though is terrified of insects. Being big for the breed you certainly know when he air bucks or leaps into the air because a fly is around or he has seen a bee. He has had lots of offers in his life to sire lurcher offspring but has remained a bachelor. He still squats to wee aged seven.

Chance my Greek Spangle-Hound.

Known as Chance, Chancey, Chancey-Woozle, Chancey-woo, Woo, woozle, Chancicles. He’s not just any Woo he’s the Chance-woo. He’s the best Woo in the World.

He is a very happy, friendly dog to people and other dogs, cats and horses. He’s very good on social cues. Loves coming out with the horses and is really obedient. He used to love agility but another dog had a go at him there plus he didn’t like the teeter and lost confidence. I’ve let him mature and may try again when lockdown ends. Can sit, lie down, roll-over, spin both ways, give a high-five and go around an obstacle on command.

Likes/ loves: everyone. chasing squirrels, pheasants and seagulls. Loves playing with his best buddy Mario, pizzle sticks, tummy rubbing, eating horse poo, eating feathers. Digging holes in the garden and breaking the heads off my tulips ?

Dislikes: baths, having his feet washed, toenails clipped, not sure about swimming, people who act strangely. Unidentifiable objects discarded in the field e.g. fly masks ?

When I first got him and be was afraid to leave the house.

Now a confident and happy dog 20 months later.

I know I’m biased, but I honestly think Button and Rufus are the best looking springers! Button especially looks like a springer/setter mix, possibly the most perfect combination if we’re going to talk crosses. I know she’s a springer, but I adore her more setter like markings.

Here are my Rough Collies, Lettie (Tri), Jerry (Blue Merle) and Twinkle (sable)

Twinkle AKA Winkles, Poochie, Twinkle Toes, Wooch, the grumpy one is the first collie who came to us via re-homing and is the reason we love the breed. She's sensitive, particular and only does things on her terms, doesn't like most men, can be snappy when she's tired or bothered but is very sweet with me and my husband and she absolutely loves chippy chips!

Jerry AKA Jericho (his proper name), goofy, nuisance, the crazy one is nutty, very energetic and loves to run, he's got questionable recall when distracted and he is a bit dog reactive but he's the best office dog ever and loves anything edible and swimming - the boggier the water the better!

Lettie AKA the cuddly one is our latest addition because Husband wanted the trio! she is Jerry's half sister and is very sweet, gentle, loving, cuddly, floppy, licky and like a fluffy black missile first thing in the morning but she can be a bit shy with new people. She loves playing with slippers and shares Jerry's love of food!

Love this thread! It has really cheered me up seeing everyone’s sweet dogs!

I’m especially missing my hound at the moment as she lives with my parents and I can’t see her due to lockdown.

4 year old Lily, aka Diddly, aka Roving Lily, an Irish ex-racer rehomed just over a year ago.

Possibly the most laid back dog I’ve ever met, though loves her zooms around the garden and kitchen. 2F4DF701-49BB-465C-A0AA-FAE48576A371.jpeg0A63590A-346F-4AA3-932D-32BEA5D46FC9.jpeg

Meggie Moo. Rescue bitch, only 6 teeth but doesnt stop her eating anything. Can circle for half an hour when she thinks she should be having her dinner. Sings in the car, very early riser and doesnt shut up till I get up. Lovely affectionate dog, very well behaved considering her background. Makes me smile every day

Dog 2. Badger. AKA Biggles Also rescue. Has very rarely put a foot wrong in the 11 years Ive had him. Also very well behaved, not through my training! Likes his own space, has always been incredibly lazy on walks. Tolerates Megs because she doesnt hassle him.
Both dogs keeping me more or less sane at the moment.

Pic might not enlarge, had to reduce to insert but may have reduced too far

These are my two girls. Ruby is the black & white, we think she is a jack x cocker - completely crazy. She was dumped aged about 6 weeks when I adopted her. She was so tiny she could sit in my hand. Jade is the fawn and white. Not sure of her breeding but we think she is a Norfolk or Norfolk X. Again, she was a rescue, not socialised never played, and a complete nightmare when I got her. Both are now really friendly happy soles. Ruby is 10 now and Jade we think she is 8

I'm totally biased but they are totally gorgeous :)

When Button was first surrendered, there was absolutely no reason she couldn't have been rehomed with just about anyone. She had been brought up with kids, hadn't got an aggressive bone in her and her incontinence was under control but I just took one look at the pictures her previous owners had sent rescue and figured her and Rufus would make the perfect pair so nabbed her!!
