iPhone shutting down outside due to cold - what to do about emergency calling out hacking?

What do other people do? I need to take my phone out hacking in case something goes wrong, but if it just shuts down as soon as I take it out (like it did today) then there’s no point taking it! Are there any solutions?

is your iphone ancient?
I've never had a problem with any iphone shutting down in the cold.

Battery is always less in cold weather so if yours is old and has an old battery it may die outside, only solution would be a new battery or a new phone.

Mobile phones shut down in extremes of heat to protect themselves. It's not unique to iPhones and you have to consider all the times you have no signal so they don't work then either.
If you want 100% work time then you have to spend considerably more on specialist SOS kit that the extreme climbers/sailors, even then things can and do fail.

The advice for traveling to really cold regions is to keep it off to preserve the battery and only turn it on when you need it. However this advice is if you are going to Lapland or somewhere with a similar latitude. Lower latitudes shouldn't have an effect on a battery.

Not totally about phones, mine does shut down occasionally on cold weather but I am going to re think my safety whilst hacking alone as when I had my fall I was completely paralysed (temporary) but I could not access my phone to ring anyone. Luckily I was with a friend.

The only time mine shut down was in the winter of 2010, when it was -18 at night and around -9 in the daytime. It's never shut down in "normal" cold winter conditions. I think there may be something a bit wrong with your phone OP (unless you are posting from the Arctic :D).

Mine has done this before out walking but only in temperatures around zero or lower, when I had it out taking photos on it. I would just keep it as close to your body as possible (inside jacket pocket, or bra!) and maybe also put it on aeroplane mode to preserve the battery.

Edited to add, my iPhones are always hand me downs so perhaps yours is old?

My old iPhone does this - I keep in a glove in my pocket which helps but also have a pound land power bank & cable in my pocket to recharge if needed

My iPhone did this and one of my friends had the same problem too. Generally if I went out with it fully charged it was less likely to switch off than if the battery was only half full. In the end though I decided it was just too unreliable and it was a few years old so I got a new phone (not an iPhone).

My old iPhone used to do this as soon as it got past -1 no matter what the charge was like. Got my new one last summer and it’s coped so far!

Only have an emergency in temperate conditions?

All the iPhones I've had have been buggers for this. I now have an Android which doesn't seem to have the same issue.

I have definitely had this issue with iPhones and have always had ones that are no older than two years old so not ancient ones. And this is in the UK, not in particularly cold temperatures. I think it is normally the exposure time allowing it to get cold - it normally happened if I left my phone in the tack room or on the side for a few hours - I kept noticing it after an afternoon of clipping horses.

So I try to keep it in inside pockets and even have a little fleece lined pouch to put it in when it is rather cold. Annoyingly it will “die” and not turn back on and then when plugged in will come back to life with adequate battery. So I also invested in a car charger so could quickly plug it in to turn on if urgent or do that on the way home.

I use a Rider SOS app, if I don't move for a minute it sets of an alarm within the phone. I then tap the phone and it is quiet (if I had just stopped for a chat etc). If no one taps the phone it contacts my husband by text, also giving him a map with me pinpointed to within 10ft.

So, if hacking alone I tell him so he has his phone on me.

I have had a couple of false alarms where I have forgotten to turn it off, but when he has received the text and map he has been surprised that I am in danger... in the tack room... so he has called me and I have just felt silly.

Glad you were with a friend.

I think the app was £4.99.

I have also started carrying around a power bank and cable. It's stupid isn't it, these things cost so much money and then they don't work when it's just a bit bloomin cold!

thankyou, I have looked at that app and will be using it when I’m eventually able to ride again.

Mine will be on, for example, 40% battery and I’ve got it out on a very cold night and it suddenly goes to 5% when I press a few things and then turns off.

Exactly what my old iPhone 7 use to do or it would just shut off then not turn on until I plugged it in (or turn on unexpectedly with 40% battery a hour later) apparently it was because the battery was on its way out. If you go to settings, battery and check battery life. Mine said 78% and Apple said that wasn't good.
Replaced the battery and it worked as good as new for a year then it started happening again. It was about 3 years old at this point.

Just spoilt myself with a new iPhone 11 pro (mainly for taking equine and dog photos) and have no issue in the cold! The photos are amazing too!

Mine does this too and has dropped me right in it a couple of times!

I replaced mine last year as the battery on my old one was dreadful (4+ years old), so current phone is less than 18 months old, was fine last winter but now dies in cold weather. If I warm it up again then it will come back on but does take some time.

I've always had iphones and I've never had this problem. In the winter my phone is always in a pocket in the layer underneath my coat ie. fleece. I have had the problem where it shuts down in the heat if I've left it in the sun on a hot day though.
