What insanity is this?!

Other dog walkers telling off their dogs for saying hello to me makes me scratch my head (but if they don’t have dogs then I’ll call them away). I mean, I’m ankle deep in mud, dripping with rain, I have 2 filth meisters of my own splashing through the endless puddles, do I look like I care?!

You say if people don't have dogs you call yours away, so does that mean you don't bother if the other people have dogs ? I do not like other dogs approaching me at any time, but if I have my dogs with me I would not be impressed at all.

If other owners are talking to my lot, they can approach, if not, they are asked to walk on, which they do. If it’s onlead, my lot are taken away. We walk in a place renowned for friendly dogs/owners. It’s very rare to meet reactive dogs, it’s been this way since we had the first pair, bar one lab who was always loose and always went for Jake, so we avoided it like the plague. Often, we don’t meet other dogs at all. Met one yesterday the whole route, but sometimes meet others that we know. After 11 years of avoiding other people/dogs because of Zak, I’m very conscious of not allowing my dogs to annoy others.

I’m going to risk the field with the wooded section today because the muddiness of the big woods killed my hips yesterday. I’m a little worried that we’ll meet other dogs.

Aptly, I just came across this pic on my FB just now.

How dirty you are isn't the point. Personally I don't want mine in the habit of leaping at strangers, you may not mind but many people do and dogs don't differentiate between dirty and clean people. I try, not always successfully, to instil manners in mine so that they don't upset the general public. It is part of the Good Citizen tests too.
Mine don’t jump up, they are remarkably well behaved. This dog yesterday was literally sniffing me, I’m probably covered in 3 different scents, it didn’t jump up, it was very polite. My 2 were in the brambles to the side and then ran past the dog’s family back to me.

I don’t want strange dogs approaching me and sniffing me, friendly or not 🤷‍♀️. How bizarre to criticise someone for telling their dogs off for ‘saying hello’ to a stranger, with or without a dog.
Me? I categorically did not criticise. If you’re referring to my response to ycbm, I was talking about the dog owner telling her she should wear a sign.

No you didn't criticise, but you did say it made you scratch your head when other dog walkers told their dogs off for saying hello to you, which gives the impression you don't agree with them doing that.

Out walking yesterday when an off lead bitch ran up and gave mine a nice polite greeting and then they started to play. No issues with that we've met this dog before and she's lovely. After a minute the owner says 'oh wait, is yours a girl because mines in heat'. I didn't even have a response as I didn't know where to start, I just confirmed that she was.

I got a phone call yesterday from the council. I’ve had a case open with them about nuisance dogs on our land, but particularly the rottie.
The lady who has been dealing with it rang me and told me that the police have been involved and things have been put in place this week. She said we should have no more problems with the Rottie being on our land or off lead and if we do, to contact them asap. I think it has to be muzzled in public aswell.

I haven’t seen him this week, which is unusual. I don’t know if he’s been coming extra early, or not at all. But I’m pleased something seems to have been done. The owner is very arrogant, so it will be interesting to see if he follows orders.

We have just spent quite a lot of money installing tornado type fencing inside our dry stone wall perimeter. We have had hunting gates put in at the ends, so that we can access the "no man's land" that we have created. At the beginning of this week we put locks on those gates, today I went down to put some electric fence off sets on the posts and found dog muck on the stock side of the fence!!!! What the hell we have to do to stop people using the field as a dog toilet is beyond me!

Or, a sign at either end:-

Dog owners who permit their dogs to trespass will be charged to have the remains of their dog returned.
Note: Covert CCTV cameras in operation, set up by exasperated, gun owning land owner.

Or a sentry gun.

I heard, on the wireless, about a man who built himself a Furbinator 3000.

No help to you YorksG but the best thing about downsizing… no one else can access our land. 😃
Edited to wander even more off topic. I had a wonderful walk with the dogs yesterday, all on other people land via footpaths. They are such an incredibly brilliant resource that if you have ever lived in a country without you give daily thanks for.
Unless you are a landowner. 🙄😁

I absolutely agree with public rights of way, of pretty much all types, I think I've said before that my paternal grandfather was part of the mass trespass. We have  no rights of way across our small parcel, but have total numpties using the ones on neighbours land, letting their dogs loose (that's before we get to those feeding our horses over the wall!) Our beef rearing neighbours had a bit of a do this summer, when out of control dogs ran the cattle with resulting lameness!
I've now put wire on the hunting gates, so hopefully I've stopped that entry point.

Could you electrify them? 😄

The next part of the project is putting off sets on the wall side of the posts, with thin electric wire and a dedicated energiser, we're hoping thay puts them off enough.
Also maybe barbed wire positioned so as to injure deter incoming trespassers, but not the horses? I hate barbed wire, but sometimes needs must.

I have worked so hard getting my two non reactive around dogs. They dont have good enough recall to go off lead, yet the number of dogs that charge over with owners pathetically saying 'he/ shes friendly'

Yesterday, a huge lab cross boxer came charging over, owner shouting in the distance for it to come back. She just launched at one of my girls, full on went for mine. I had both mine in my hands, kicking it to try get it off. Owner finally managed to haul it off, with mine screaming. So so thankful it didnt puncture, but I just know I am back to square one to get mine ok with others again.

So so angry, all the owner could say was 'sorry, i didnt see you in time to stop mine' so clearly knows its got a history. Then proceeded to talk about the weather?!

These are more annoying than irresponsible. Venty venty vent time.

Last night, my neighbour, who has been told upteen times that my young female is reactive (fine to stop and chat with old dog), came down the path towards us in the dark (passing his own house to do so).
He constantly talks and whistles at his dog when he thinks anyone is around so we both heard him a mile off. It's a tiny Yorkie but he lets it pull him around and complains he can't hold it. Dude, I can manage a 40kg GSD.
I ducked through the hedge so could get her home without making too much noise. When I got close to my house, where there's another cut through, he was standing there blocking me, so he'd seen me divert and gone back on himself. And says 'come on ahead'.
It's way too narrow a space (between a house and an electricity hut thing) so I said 'no, she'll play up, I'll go back the other way'. Also it's 11.30 at this stage, I don't want to stand and have a conflab outside someone else's house? And thankfully she didn't kick off but I could have done without the hokey cokey at l that time of night.
He's married and has loads of company (kids and grandkids) I'm really bored of him going out of his way to engage me in conversation late at night in a built up area.

And this morning, came out, dog was on her toes, there's a terrier outside the house. Look up the lane and there's a group of older men who park at the bottom and go for a nice walk, about 50m on up. So dog could be crapping all over the place, getting eaten by someone else's dog 🙃 and they wouldn't even notice. So I call out 'Could you call your dog please?'. Again, small dog did not kick off, bless her, even though right outside the house is the worst flashpoint.
So I took her round the back for a few minutes to let the terrier catch up with the owners. Had another go and it had gone about 20m up and was sticking it's head up the arse of a staffy being walked on a lead.

Really bored of people out for a nice bimble, who can't be bothered with their dogs, where they are or what they're doing.

My girl is in season so I have been walking her at 5:30 in the morning to miss the worst of the idiots but this failed this morning. Dog appeared from nowhere - black dog, owner somewhere in the distance with no torch, no idea where his dog was and no recall. I asked him to call his dog off, got the usual ‘he’s friendly’ response and then got told I shouldn’t be walking my dog while she’s in season as ‘it’s not fair on the boys’

Blasted samoyeds were ahead of us in the woods today, so I hung back. Haven’t seen them for months when one tried to hump Bear, he was unimpressed, obviously. The same one came up and Bear told him off. The owner said ‘He needs telling’ (hers) so I told Bear it isn’t his job to tell other dogs off and rapidly took a different path. Her other one barks constantly, walks backwards and barks at her all the time.

Had an otherwise lovely walk meeting 3 other spaniels and a Viszla whose owner says she never wants to play but was trying to play with Mitch.

Took Ivy to a paid for secure field today. Multiple dog poos left behind by others. Just so grim. Why are people like this?!

Because they are inconsiderate slobs?

Dog field etiquette. Slobs, please do not:
  • Leave fag ends scattered round the picnic table
  • Leave dog poo in the field shelter
  • Leave huge clumps of dog hair where you've groomed your dog and couldn't be bothered to bin it. Why not just groom your dog at home and leave all the mess there.
  • Leave rubbish, sweet wrappers, paper hankies - too idle to put in the bin
  • Allow your muddy dog to climb all over the seating and tables
  • Allow your dog to dig holes for subsequent visitors or their dogs to break a leg in.
  • Allow your dog to chew the poles on the agility jumps
  • Arrive too early. Leave too late. You are encroaching on other people's field time. Plus there is a reason for 10 minute gap between bookings.

God I hate people. Cottage bordering our farm has been turned into an Airbnb. This morning there were about 4 off lead dogs on our muck heap, in one of my grazing paddocks and on the path leading through the farm, and a group of about 6 people milling around, clearly lost.
I was a little way away so shouted them to put dogs on leads on the farm, but they just turned and walked off. Found out they had climbed over the ditch from the cottage (using a mounting block one of the ladies leaves around the farm ride in case she has to get off and back on again) and trespassed across our crop fields with their dogs.

And we’ve got another new neighbour on the lane who walks her spaniel off lead up the lane. It’s run infront of my car and a friends car and seems to have no recall. Then they roam around the farm. She has been told several times that she is trespassing if she leaves the footpath and that the dog should be on a lead through the farm, but she just smiles and says ok, then does the same the next day.

I would ask the Airbnb owner to leave a card for the clients with the Countryside Code and the specific etiquette around not trespassing on your yard in a very obvious place.

Saw someone today with a doodle thing on a flexi lead walking along the lane, I slowed down so I didn’t catch him up as his dog realised there were dogs following him so he turned round and came towards me so I stopped , owner didn’t notice until dog hit the end of the lead. Pulled it towards him and still didn’t secure the clip so it was then wandering across the lane… luckily no traffic was coming but he was oblivious to where his dog was . Madness
