Irresponsible Owners

Today on a remote single track drove road I encountered a male, Eastern European probably, with a very large, tan, dog that appeared to not like me and my dog approaching. The bloke had a job hanging onto it, he had it by its collar which he twisted but they stood in a gateway to a field and I yelled to get behind the gate and he said he was waiting in the gateway until I passed. The dog was on it's back legs, straining to get to us. I very much didn't want to but did, my boy not reacting at all, which he doesn't thankfully.

It was truly scary. I may see the odd collie, Spaniel, Lab etc there but in 14 years have not encountered this.

Sadly not. The male owner removed himself and the dog from the scene leaving this poor woman alone with her critically injured dog.
The only thing she was able to provide was a description of the vehicle and the police are not interested as it was a dog on dog attack.

Different area but why a different policing policy?

She's significantly more likely to harm herself or her own dog with that than to inflict any impactful injury on a dog like an XL.

It's been said before many many times on this and the other thread but bears repeating (not at you maisie06! Just generally): these sorts of dogs have a huge pain tolerance or are even activated by pain; hit it, kick it or wallop it with a brick and there's a good chance it'll grip harder. The only thing that is going to give you a chance is a slip lead under the neck, end through the handle, as high on the neck as you can, and lift until you take its air away. You can get 4mm paracord slip leads that fold up to nothing in your pocket.
Exactly what I have in a pocket when I'm out- I also avoid the areas by the local sink estates...

Dogs don't deserve these owners! Another person today suggested I should wear a sign if I can't see their dog, are they really so thick they can't see how offensive that is?

Staffie was being walked off lead on a horse/bike/walker shared path where signs say dogs should be on lead. This isn't a problem if the dog is under control. From 50 metres away, the dog runs amiably towards us and begins to circle my feet, so I cross my arms, stare into space and stand still.

Dog is called back to the owner and goes immediately. On reaching the owner is put on a lead. We all continue our walk, but as the owner gets close ........... he allows the extending lead to unreel and the dog is back round my feet!

I decided he needed reminding that other path users might need him to keep his dog, and its tripwire, away from them for hidden reasons, and out came the "wear a notice then" comment.

How dumb are these people?
.

Absolutely. It's honestly my biggest frustration in life.
I got my malinois puppy at 6 months old. She was a dream! A true maligator (tiny puncture wounds all up my arms!) But she was friendly, outgoing, confident, loved people, kids, dogs...not sure on cats, but can't win them all.
She was first attacked by my neighbours dog a couple of months after I got her. It happened on my front door step, I had just locked the door and couldn't get back in and their dog had got loose. This broke her confidence with other dogs.
Since then she has been properly attacked 3 times, once by a lab who was trying to bowl her over to get to her stomach, he snapped at me when I hit him in the face with my lead. The owner mumbled an apology. I never go that way any more as I know he's still off the lead all the time.
Then it was two collies, one of which grabbed her leg and she needed a bandage. The owner was extremely apologetic and made sure we were both ok.
Then it was another collie who also got her leg, but didn't break the skin. The owner just stood there. No apology, didn't call the dog. I almost kicked it in the face to get it away. I really really don't want to be kicking dogs!!!
We've been "set upon" and harassed by so many dogs I've really lost count. Once was a pack of foxhounds who were absolutely NOT meant to be in the area. They laughed at me when I told them to call them away as they were circling her and getting right up in her face. They didn't mean harm, but they were terrifying her! She wasn't right for days after that.

The latest was a pack of 4 dogs, in the dark, no owners in sight. They didn't bother to call their dogs away at all.
I had a snarling, hackles up, tail up golden retriever charge us and the owners said "She just wants to make friends, but other dogs don't seem to like her" I wonder why!?
A chihuahua tried chewing on her hind legs, I shouted to the owner that my dog WILL KILL theirs (she probably wouldn't, but I imagine it was sore and she's about 5x it's size, so just a nip could do damage!) they didn't care.
The guy with 4 frenchies, no leads or collars who surrounded us barking. The guy just walked off! One frenchie ran the opposite way, he couldn't care less about what his dogs were doing.

I could go on and on and on....

She is the perfect dog in the house and when there's no triggers around. I work very hard with my trainer and just when I get her to a point where she isn't reacting any more, something happens. I'm so frustrated that this is the 2nd dog of mine that isn't friendly through no fault of my own. My wolfdog was attacked a couple of times, but she was ruined by my ex. That's a whole other story!

Quite honestly, although my OH is normally very calm, had he been with me when the lab pinned Goose the other week, I think there would have been size 13s flying. As it was, I had to physically remove my dog from under the lab as the owners stood watching at a distance. I didn’t hesitate to run over. I think I would have got myself into serious trouble had it been a dog that would go for a person.
Years ago my husband, before he retired as a policeman, was walking with me and our elderly labrador. He was wearing his steel capped work boots. Anyway some sort of bull terrier, possibly large staffy, ran at our dog with his owners in hot pursuit screaming for him to come to them. The dog was trying to attack our labrador who was walking alongside us, my husband was able to kick the dog away thank God. He didn't use excessive force, the owner actually apologised they'd recently adopted the dog from battersea. The dog was actually trying to bite my husbands foot, he was relieved to be wearing the steel capped boots!

6.30am this morning.

I'm on the Golf Course. My three all on leads.

A bloke running with a Labrador allowed it to run across the golf course at me and my dogs.

My reactive dog, obviously reacts. His dog is then standing maybe three foot away from us, barking and snarling.

No apology when he eventually managed to call it back.

I mean come on. Why on earth would you allow your dog to bog off to approach three unknown dogs, all on lead?

I just hate people. I swear the vast majority of the human race are entitled ass holes.

Letting off a newly rescued dog is a terrible idea for everyone involved! 🤬

Absolutely agree! I had a dog run from the other side to get to Zak and Bear one day. It wasn’t pretty, I had to haul my two away and apparently it was my fault for keeping my two occupied doing retrieves and the other owner not having taught a recall or even trying to recall, didn’t say a word!

Walking my two this morning and saw 2 unknown dogs on the path so called from afar to check it was ok to go past. I was glad that I missed the GSD behaving like a salmon on the line on the other side of the park and mine won’t pelt across to investigate, fortunately, far too busy doing the sniffs.

I saw an off lead, unmuzzled XL bully today. I am not particularly worried about XL bullies personally, no more than any other big dog. What I don't understand is why, oh why would you put your dog in that position? Your dog will almost certainly die if you're caught!! It didn't help that it approached an on lead GSD, who looked very worried. The XL had very stiff posture with a very high and stiff tail. Thankfully it ran off after it's owner, who was cycling off down the tow path.
Utter stupidity.

I doubt very much anything will happen to his dog, the police can’t even keep up with dealing with dogs that actually bite someone

I just don't know why you'd risk it. This dog was in a different area (was at parents), but a dog I saw sometimes around my town was taken and pts for not being exempt and off lead and unmuzzled :(

I get this all the time at the coffee trailer. We are a very dog friendly cafe, we’ve lots of room, it’s outside, but I ask people to keep their dogs on a lead because male dogs cock their legs on the pots of flowers or picnic benches. Then the next male dog cocks his leg up, and the next until the area (where people are eating) starts to smell. Some people argue “oh he won’t cock his leg” then say “oh that’s a first” when it does. Or “mines a girl” - well sorry we’re just making it a general rule so nobody gets offended.. So some of them attach their extension leads but don’t click them, so the dog is still wandering around (often still cocking their leg) and the owner is trying to order and is completely oblivious. I’ve had dogs at the end of their extended leads barking and bouncing around in the gateway so that people can’t get in. My neighbour is a nuisance for this, can’t possibly see why anyone wouldn’t like her unruly dog. I’ve actually had customers turn and leave because the dog was obviously putting them off. But when I said (politely) something to her she took umbrage a little and hasn’t been back to the cafe for a year! Her horses are the same. That spoiled and fussed over that she has no idea how rude they are (always used to bite my horse if we hacked out together and never reined in or told off if she noticed).

So I don't want to say this one was irresponsible, because I think that it was just an unexpected turn of events, but it shook me up and was a real 'oh shit!' moment so I'll share it all the same.

Where I take my dogs for agility, there are two rings next to each other. They are separated by stock fencing which is probably about 4ft high and it has tarp running along so dogs cannot see into the next ring.

So I have my collie with me who is my agility dog. I also have my whippet with me who I just do bits with for laughs.

It's my whippets turn so my collie is tied on to the fence. We are having a jolly time with him clowning around, all legs and ridiculousness; you know, how whippets are.

Next thing I know, a rather solid male Malinois jumps the fence into the ring.

I do not know this dog. Know nothing about this dog. Have never seen this dog.

I grab my whippet and explain to the owners that my collie will absolutely not appreciate it if he runs over to her tied on the fence.

Luckily they got him back pretty quickly but it did leave me feeling a bit shook up. My collie who is actually generally reactive, didnt even stand up. She is used to seeing dogs at agility so isnt usually reactive there, but I was still surprised she didn't even lift her butt off the ground 😅

Wow I'm genuinely shocked to hear that. I'm under the same police force as you and nothing was done about the one I reported that had actually escalated to small warning bites, wasn't registered, wasn't neutered and was going to be used for breeding.

It's ridiculous. These poor dogs don't deserve these owners. A friend has one who's such a lovely boy, she does everything by the books to keep him happy and safe. (I should add I'm not in MK any longer, that's where my parents are and where I saw the dog. The one that was PTS was in Powys)

A different theme, but someone I know reported neglect and nothing was done. These dogs constantly fight and have put each other in the vets and their owner in hospital, live in their own filth and never get walked any more. Two of them bred and the pup they kept is so skinny. Apparently the RSPCA visited and said it was fine!!!

oh, duh! i forgot you are in a totally different area now. Thames Valley couldn't care less

Two loose, unaccompanied labradors yeeted themselves through a hedge and fell on to the footpath below (it's an old holloway) to have a go at us this afternoon. Nasty, cowardly bastard dogs, one went for my dog and one circled behind snapping at me, so I made a split second decision to drop the long line. I am deeply impressed with how she handled it and how quickly she shrugged it off when she'd sent them packing, but yeah - going to do the whole 'dogs are inconsequential, no need to react' training a great service. 🙄

A friend was telling me how the Lab she is looking after and another huge boy Lab, were having a brilliant time running and chasing each other around a pub on Friday night😯. Err, just why do people think this is to be applauded, never mind acceptable. I think I was meant to be impressed.
We do still laugh about the time our old lab (then a pup) had a very active play with the landlords dog many years ago. But we were the only people in there.

I met a man recently with a massive merle XL bully that he admitted he got for breeding. He said the market is stronger than ever for them as is the potential to make a lot of money. He insisted his was a family dog and he had three children under 5 who lived with the dog who was the size of a small pony!
It's only a matter of time before we are reading about that dog and one of his child victims in the paper. Spoiler: "He's never done anything like that before."

Just back from a walk to the local park with the boys. There was an xl type on the other side of the road and the owner was struggling to hold it when it saw my two. It was barking and trying to lunge, soft muzzle on. He made it sit but I would have walked on rather than let 8t focus on other dogs. In the park there was another one being held by the owner on top of a picnic bench. I didn’t like its body language one bit, no muzzle. Fortunately didn’t need to go anywhere near it.

Picking up keys for new home in local town yesterday, I'd wondered if it might be a place to consider for when we buy. Maybe, but I would never take Ivy to the town centre. First visit a week ago saw a rather large staffie and then a Rottie towing its owner down the road. Then yesterday saw an XL bully kick off and though thank god I didn't have my own dog with me! Really frightening seeing it up on its hindlegs and willing the collar not to slip off/break.

After my exhaust falling off adventure, we decided to take the dogs to the park. Just leaving was a young girl, maybe 8? She had an 18 week old xl type, all very lovely, of course. My two were allowed a very restrained sniff, everyone on leads. The little girl was very chatty. Turns out mum had 10 puppies, they’re keeping 5!! I was (almost) speechless. It’s not a terrible area, there are xls around but to be breeding in the current climate just takes me aback.

I say it’s not bad but we’d already tried the park up the road and come away due to some idiot racing up and down on a dirt bike, dodging round all the kids who’d gravitated there after school. Bonkers.
