Put up a garden shed or some other structure that cheeky felines could shimmy up within the garden to escape resident canines?

Obviously a JRT has less reach than a GSD, but this same cat, before she moved in and took over (she's signed over to us now), used to blow raspberries at the dog from just this fence. Cat was soon the boss after careful introductions on a long line.

Other cats are hurried on their way across our property by both the cat and the dog.

This makes me laugh because I used to have a cat that would do the same thing. The cats were indoor cats and I would occasionally take them out back. There was a ravine and woods behind the house. If other cats went for the older cat my cat would tear into the intruder and chase it into the ravine. She would come back with the most satisfied look on her face.

Now back to idiot owners.

I met an acquaintance in the park at the weekend with her young dog . We were chatting when an on lead staffy came by so I put Fodhla between my legs but my acquaintance just allowed her dog to approach the on lead dog and she just totally ignored the fact her dog was annoying another dog. I ended up calling her dog over and she said 'oh no she's grand she's super friendly' so like the sap I am I ended up saying 'oh just habit I don't allow Fodhla to approach dogs that are on a lead'. Anyway now she is messaging me asking me to meet up for dog walks and I CBA because she'll stress me out and now I'm trying to make my excuses but I don't want to message back saying sorry don't want to because your dog is going to get her face chewed off some day 😬

I met with the most ridiculous response from an owner yesterday
I was walking on a narrow track through the woods. I heard the gate click shut on the track joining this track so put my German shepherd on the lead as there is not much room to pass on these tracks
An off lead staffie came bounding up to us growled then attacked my shepherd who was sitting by my side. Literally launched at my dog.He responded in defence of course but I managed to hang on -just!- but did fall over
Whereupon the young lad owner appeared dragged his dog away , still growling ,and said “oh are you ok? If your dog had not been on a lead this wouldn’t have happened…”
I was speechless from my position in the nettles! Luckily my dog being bigger and actually not reactive normally is fine but what if this had been a small dog!!!!

It’s a great pity we can’t report people to the police for idiocy. But I would have reported him for an out of control dog.

I was out with my terrier and we met a staffy so I put mine on the lead
Staffy approached him and he growled - staffy man said breezily 'Oh it's because yours is on a lead'
I said 'Or because yours isn't' and he gave me a mouthful

I would I think @Gloi if I knew her better. She's a very good friend of my very good friend so I guess I'm afraid of creating awkwardness! Worth thinking about though- I'm thinking about just having her over some day with her dog instead as it is a lovely dog and Fodhla really liked her so maybe could go from there.

Walking (remote woodland track) with my 1 yr old Presa the other week, we met a man with an off lead cockerpoo type, which came bounding up to us. Given her size and type, most people are (reasonably) wary, but this chap never tried to get his friendly, bouncy fluff ball back.
Lucky for both of us that the only reason mine was on a lead is that she is going through the 'why should I?' stage of dog adolescence, so I had decided she needed the lead practice.

She greeted the strange dog like a long-lost friend for a couple of seconds then moved on with her walk without a backward glance, but honestly if she'd been reactive, there would have been very little I could have done to prevent his dog being hurt or killed.

You could always show her this thread, where over 50% of the posts (taking a guess) are complaints about people letting off-lead dogs approach and harass on-lead ones.

On a more serious note, there are probably more educational sites which say the same thing. "I'm not comfortable walking with you because letting your dog run up to any passing strange dog could be really dangerous. Here's some reading."

To return to this, I don't think it's fair to expect myself or my landlords to shell out for a 2m fence (which any GSD worth its salt could get over if it wanted to) or a shed because someone else cannot control their pets. As I said our previous two show lines killed two cats between them (ours) and my working lines have much more prey drive than they did, I think we're past the point of careful introductions, long lines  it would not be a fair fight at all and I don't believe there is a cat around here who could 'teach them a lesson'.
Yes, I do moan, but that's what these sorts of posts are for, and for all my moaning, a line on the dog is the safest thing for everyone and I can point to mine and their waistlines and the amount of shoes I go through if anyone thinks their legs are not being stretched enough :p
We can sit out the back but again, that has not stopped cats coming round from the front and attempting to just...saunter past a large predatory animal. But as a generalisation I never was a person who liked to sit in the garden doing nothing/stuck the dogs in the garden to please themselves anyway.

What is this weird things about leads causing the issue (x wouldn't have happened if your/my dog wasn't on the lead)? Also, why is the implied solution always 'take them off the lead'?!

I forgot one from the other day. One of my worries about walking in our neighbourhood is coming nose to nose on blind street corners with large dog aggressive/reactive dogs, especially as I know there are several around here that fit that bill (guy walking two reactive Great Danes anyone?!)

We came across one I haven't seen before, a GSD I could see was very interested in us. I wanted to cross the road as I usually do (for any breed really as the pavements are too narrow and I don't like passing at close quarters) but the road was too busy so I had to stop and wait. Other owner just kept walking at us, I had no time or space to move and sure enough the dog barked and lunged at us, actually mainly me because I was between Ivy and the other dog because that's all I could do to make a bit more space. I was focused on the road so not sure how close we were to actual contact but it can't have been far off!

I sort of appreciated the other owner acknowledging it shouldn't have happened by correcting the dog, I'm just not sure a post-hoc 'effing behave!' would be my preference over waiting a few moments for us to get out of the way as I was clearly attempting to do.

I was out with my 3 today and saw a woman approaching with 2 dogs on leads, I was waiting for one of mine to finish their poo so I could pick it up put mine on leads straight away, went to pick up the poo and while I wasn’t looking she let her dogs off!!! I took mine to the edge of the path while trying to know the bag and stood in some other dogs poo…. I was not happy as I was wearing trainers so it’s all mashed in and said trainers are sitting in the garden waiting for me to clean them . Why on earth would you let dogs off when you have seen the stationery person putting theirs on. I was so angry I couldn’t even speak to her as I would have been very rude….

Last night I was walking Bunny down the track that goes between our farm fields, we were between the fields that have cows and calves (plus a bull in each) in. I had put Bunny on a lead as we were nearing the farm buildings and she has a habit of disappearing and going to harass neighbours if she gets to the farm gate and is off lead so we don't let that happen. The track is actually a footpath, half way up the footpath splits and goes across a field on either side. This track is the access point to sewage works at the end plus for farm machinery to all our fields - we are currently cutting and baling silage so there is quite a lot of traffic. I came round the corner and there was a man with 2 dogs off lead, one was a medium size cockapoo type and the other slightly smaller but still bigger than Bunny and both were a good 20 yards ahead of him. Both came flying up to us barking and circling Bunny who tried to get behind me. The larger dog then stood off from me and planted, barking at me. I stood still as I really didn't know what it would do. In the meantime their owner is calling them but making no attempt to rush and catch them (they were around 35 yards ahead of him by now). He said to me that they are all noise as he approached but I didn't particularly want to find that out. I told him that they should be on a lead and he needed to watch the cows - his response was that they wouldn't bother with them but he would put them on a lead. I carried on walking but I have no doubt that he would have let them off again once round the corner. It just frustrates me that people come through the farm gate and just let their dogs straight off, not knowing that there are cats, ponies, cows and calves around, let alone farm machinery. Everytime I see someone do it, I tell them that they should be on leads but it seems to fall on deaf ears.

And don't get me started about the dog poo and the full dog poo bags that people leave hanging on gates, in hedges or just on the track!

Just about to pass through a kissing gate and luckily hadn’t yet opened it when an entire black lab flew at us out of nowhere, hackles up and spittle flying. No person in sight, no collar. Luckily had OH with me who handbagged the small dog and I passed him the pup so I could square up to the lab and tell it to piss off home. Bastard thing thought about having a pop at me, decided better of it and slunk off - stopping briefly for a massive crap on the footpath which I swear was some sort of power move. 😏

Pup equal parts apoplectic at the dog and beside herself as I’d raised my voice, so another walk ruined.

On the matter of cats I don't normally mind them because most round here soon run off when they see my girl and being a golden retriever she's not that interested in killing them she's also the first dog I've had that doesn't even bother to chase them she just ignores them.

However next doors new cat I hate with a passion I hate this cat. He is always in our garden and never runs off when I let her out thankfully she stays away from him but he's been getting nasty with her as if she's invading his territory when it's not even his garden.

Last week he went for her he just lunged at her and grabbed her face with his claws and it took me 10 minutes to get the bloody cat off my girl who was screaming. Took her to the vets and she's luckily she wasn't seriously injured she's got several small wounds but two deep wounds one near her left eye which narrowly missed her eye. She was stitched up and is doing ok but my neighbor doesn't care she wasn't surprised either that he attacked my girl and have since found out he's done this before gone after dogs.

My poor girl won't even go in her own garden now unless I've checked first but even then it's only to have a toilet break and she runs back inside.

my mum had one lady let her aggressive dog at ours, she was having a bad day and my mum was waiting for her to walk past, lady was having a strop that my mum was waiting and all sudden she goes "fine then!" lets her frenchie off lead and attacking mine and my dogs and claiming it was playing. beyond me. it did get reported to the police especially since my dog responded by picking the dog up. the dog wasnt hurt or anything, mine just held it in the air and let go when asked. it has still frightened me he did that. if he wasnt there, then my other dog probably would have bad inuries, hes old and while tall hes light and doesnt really want to put a fight up, if anything he coward. my mum was injured to and the ladies response to it was "well deserved!" i was a bit unsure to share, but it has been a while now.

oh and this lady across my road for some reason when we only had ginger 1, would try and let her dog go for mine??? she would go behind the house with a dog whistle and her dog to provoke mine and when we were going back to my house she opened the door and let him run at us across the road. my dog was tired, not bothered, walked off. different story if he was not tired.. she lets this dog run round everywhere, my mum has put her friend who is a good dog trainer for help and stuff but she just refuses? its a shiba, so one of those fashion trend dogs..

Can you catch the cat and bring it to animal control? So awful for your dog!

Try chasing the cat away yourself - use a super soaker or hose or crack a hunting whip. We had one that would regularly hang out in our garden stalking & killing birds so I took to chasing him away myself (we didn't have a dog at the time). My dog will chase cats but she wouldn't touch them. I saw her once chasing & herding a mixi rabbit, it gave up pretty quickly and just sat still, she went to it and touched it with her paw like come on, play.

Already tried squirting water at him, waving a broom near him but he doesn't move just hiss's.

I have tried to pick him up on another occasion but he them attacked me.

I've told my neighbor more than once and said if he wants to go in your garden he can.

I've never met a cat like him

Don’t chase him. Just calmly pour a bucket of water over it. It won’t return after that.

I'd be out there with the hose pipe every single time the thing appeared in the garden - failing that buy a Patterdale...

Absolute idiot award goes to twonk in secure dog run...this twonk hires out a dog run on a local farm, there's a few of the runs available and they are fab for training etc and I have used them myself especially in the winter when I'm being a bit lazy. Anyhow one of the runs is adjacent to a PUBLIC FOOTPATH used for access to the farm, liveries keeping horses there and it's also popular with joggers, dog walkers etc as it makes a nice circular route. So I'm walking mine along the footpathon leads when I become aware of some mad woman screeching abuse at me for walking along the PUBLIC footpath and I should take my dogs and F off somewhere else, mine were not taking any notice and it was her dog jumping at the extremely secure fencing, I said I'm within my rights to use the footpath and I will not be bullied into not using it and no other client in the run had ever had an issue, she screamed about her dogs being rescues and can't cope - I told her that i STRONGLY suspected HER behaviour was the issue not her dogs, she then threatened to let her dogs out of the run to attack mine and teach me a lesson, bad move I told her in no uncertain terms it would be the LAST thing her dog did and took note of her registration number and reported her to the owners of the run, short story is she's now banned from using it and has verbally abused other users of the runs too to bully them out of using all their time slot, Nutter absolute nutter

Maybe my neighbor just took him in so no idea if he had an owner before or not. He started hanging around our neighborhood early this year and then my neighbor took it up on herself to take him in and since then he's killed one of her cats who I liked as he was very friendly and he's mated with her older female and she sold most the kittens but kept one.

So no idea were he's come from or what he may or may not have been through. He has always had a collar on though but no tag to say who he belonged to and he just stays here now he's never wandered away from this area. And my neighbor never took him to the vets to see if he had a chip ect she just keeps him and lets him out during the day and he doesn't stray too far from her house.

I would be furious! Did the cat's owner offer to pay some of the vet bills? Can you get a big water gun like a super blaster and squirt the cat every time you see it in your garden?
