This winter just past, I spent the time commuting 120 miles a day to work, looking after 3 - 4 living out on DIY, and with the heavy snowfall, often having to walk the last few miles to the yard as the roads were impassable.
Then my old girl was ill, and went into the vet hospital, and it snowed again so she got stuck in there...
No, I am emphatically NOT looking forward to winter.
S
Hell no!
I am already dreading it...Dark when you leave home and when you get back. Pitch black, cold, alone at yard, mud everywhere, horse bored in stable during night eating me out of house & home in hay, lots more mucking out. And if it snows again, well it doesn't bare thinking about.
Totally understand you being excited about horse coming home tho, hold on to that feeling you may need it.
Yep! 1) stable chock full of shavings as mare has allergies and the other 3 already strawed up today and it was a lovely feeling strawing up stable as the past 2 years I've had the 4 on shavings, but since my heavyweight cob died last Oct as he was the 2nd reason for the shavings, this year I've decided on straw as one is a boxwalker also it's warmer and I enjoy mucking out with straw than shavings, gives me a glow to see a nice deep bed and high banks.
NO!! I t's utterly, frigging FOUL. I HATE the cold, I hate the dark evenings - poxy clocks, sod scotland, leave them alone - I hate the wet, mud and all the other **** that comes with it......I really REALLY HATE the winter - although I LOATHE christmas even more, what godforsaken, commercialistic CR*P that is....RANT OVER.
Yes but what do you do in the evenings when its dark (careful how you answer that)
The telly is totally cr*p on 50 channels. I get in about 5 after doing horses, so its a very long evening, and dont mention housework becos it does not happen in this house
And Alma if you keep everything in the dark, nobody will notice that the housework needs doing, until the spring and then you are off riding and such it's a win win situation.
yesss! Love winter Wrapping them up in nice big rugs, wearing big jackets, scarves, hats, 5 pairs of socks... clipping (well not actually clipping but when they have just been clipped and look lovely and smart) ahhh love it
It's going to be an interesting winter... I am now in a position where i finish work at about 1pm so have time to get up to the field and check the ponies. Have never lived horses out before so interested to see how that goes. Love the snow!!!
I'm hoping its not going to be as bad as last year. I'm certainly not looking forward to the mud, ice, wind, snow, rain, breaking field troughs, not being able to feel my fingers or toes. But the one good thing I'm looking forward to is getting through winter as in spring I'll be backing my mare.
Hm. Winter. Horses will be out this year... now that's going to be interesting!
I like having them in when the weather is bad, but won't have that option when we move to The Field. Our lot tend to prefer being out, so hopefully they will be happy
Roaring fires. Lovely fleeces. Fleecy hat and gloves. Crisp mornings
Not sure how I'm going to ride before work with no school though. Hm. Did it once, but had a large estate to go and ride round and the roads stayed okay to get there; The Field is reasonably close to there, but don't suppose the roads will be okay to ride along.
D1 not looking forward to winter..., poor lass suffers from Reynauds so we're finding the very warm stuff now to try and keep her happy.
YESSSS i love winter I like coldness and warm coats and clipping and rain and riding in darkness well with flood lights that is And i like rugging as its less time consuming and and and my horse is more energetic!!!! Although i hope it doesnt snow its toooo cold for my liking lol
OH YES role on hunting I can't wait. The heart in the mouth moments when you jump a huge hedge and see the huge drop the other side and will we get over it/won't we!!!! Love it
Er, well, I think so? At my yard you have your own tack room (each stable has one of its own) so i'll be sure to have a kettle in there and a little heater and a towel & maybe a shag-pile rug and easy chair and perhaps some pictures for the wall too. . .
I have to say, I don't mind so much as the mucking out warms you up and riding keeps you warm so it's just the nipping about between these activites. Oh and if you slosh freezing cold water down your wellies, if the tap works at all!! I am, for the first time, wintering a thoroughbred, so I hope he doesn't wash away in the rain and get blown away by the bitter Yorkshire wind!!
Yes because it'll be the first winter with Bella Not sure whats going to happen about riding though cos its already dark by 4 in winter which is when I get to the yard after school :/ May have to attempt to go before school maybe..
Going to be spending alot on new rugs soon
Oh yes, I am looking forward to removing all the electric strip grazing tape, no poo picking thats becasue the field is too big 15acres, just kick it around, canter most places because the ground will be softer (not frozen of course), no flies, no sweat, nights to myself becasue horses out 24/7 ad cant see them after work too dark. For them I beleieve they perfer it becasue they have a lot of land to gallop around in, no pesky rider morning , noon and night, only ride at weekends during darkest mornings and nights, no restricted grazing just free to be horses for a few months!!
I'm Looking forward to the crisp mornings, clipped horses, thick rugs and indoor BSJA
This year will be better than last as were we are now has stable lights that actually work , all our haylage and feed is indoors in a big barn so won't get wet / cold making haynets, Tack room and tea rooms are heated and for the first time ever I have a heated rug room to use. the horses will also have WARM water to be hosed off with after work and a solarium to stand under to warm them up when clipping
So the thought of winter isn't making me want to run away this year
NO!
What's to like about being permanently dark, wet and cold. Horse keeping becomes an endless number of feed & hay bills, horses hairy, grubby and greasy despite regular clipping, grooming and washing the bits that can stand the cold. Sods law says the weather will be OK all week while I'm at work, and then Saturday morning will dawn wet, windy, icy or all three and I'll feel I have to ride as he hasn't been ridden all week. Too dark to poo pick the fields daily like I do in the summer, so Saturday morning (wet, windy etc etc) also spent picking up apparently tons of wet or frozen poo. I so hated it last winter that I told everyone it would be my last winter of horse ownership, but then spring arrived and those early sunny rides and good competitions and lessons somehow made it all OK again. Now's not a good time for selling up so it looks like I'm in for another winter. Then again, what on earth would I do with all the spare time and money!
Nope, not at all. I am normally the last one up and it gets exceedinlgy tedious to be riding on your own late at night, in the school. A little easier with my boy as he has less of a tendency to see ghosts in the fields (which is somewhat scary when you are on your own) but not much fun - plus which (I know it was my choice) hes gray, so thats an outgoing battle to keep him clean-less going out, and we were really hammered by the snow and poor ground last year. School being redone shortly - thank heavens!
