I would agree to a point a well muscled and healthy weight of youngster can look mature what we saw in those pictures was a poor undermuscled and boney pony non of which would encourage me to say it was anywhere near mature enough to sit on never mind any of the other things it is supposed to have done

I agree but I also think that by the sounds of it, the pony really hasn't done very much except plod around an arena and gone out on a few hacks with lightweight/kid riders. I very much doubt that anything that has been done with it will cause it any long term harm.

My first question is for MUFF747: This is not a racehorse.. correct, are you saying that if she was trained and built enough muscle and shod with alumimum plates (which she is) by age 2 you would be happy??
My little mare who is by the way sold now has had a wonderful life, she has not been schooled at all but SAT ON by a 6, 10 and 12 year old. I have hacked her out lead rein with my horse and recommended by my professional farrier to put plates on her front feet to prevent her getting foot sore!! How cruel of me.. When she was shod she didnt even move, thats how terrible it was. She is lightly hacked in our private fields as we are lucky like that and she thrives on the attention! and she is 3 years old!!!!!!!!
I myself have an 18 year old who I owned at age 2 and was riding by 3, pony club teams at 4 and evented.. he is now working at advanced medium and is in amazing shape and fittness.
I would love to hear/see you horses!
I can only hope you put as much attention and effort into them as you have slaggging off an advert based on one picture taken by me on a phone when my friend kindly sat on my mare for me.
I also see you were all so worried about this horse enough to contact me direct!! maybe if you had of done you all would of got the correct story instead of these asumptions you have all jumped to!

and by no means is this pony thin or poor!! she is fed twice a day and adlib hay, at one point she was actually cut back as getting fat!! she lacks muscle due to not being schooled or rushed into hard work.. like a racehorse
PLEASE DO HAVE YOUR OPINIONS AND MAKE POSTS ABOUT THEM HOWEVER DO NOT MAKE IT PERSONAL BY USING PEOPLES PRIVATE ADS!!!!

first off ^^ a nice reminder that we are all on a public site! :p

Second can i ask what you all do do then with your horses and at what age?

mine was sold to me at rising 6 but then though to be 3 and a half and is now confirmed (ish) with teeth checks as no more than 4.

ive already been working her in school over poles and 2 hour hacks on the weekends and she loves her work and has never struggled. if she was indeed 3ish then should i have thrown her back in the field to be bored?

my point is: do you go with the generalisation of age or do you go with what your horse can cope with and enjoys?

LJRaz, I understand your anger, and perhaps admin will remove the thread if you ask? I apologize if anything I said caused offence.

Well for those of you who don't know what dragon driving is, I will briefly explain. Without trying to offend anyone it is a site that advertises all manner if things equestrian for sale, however it is usually well used among the 'cheaper' end of the horsey owner/breeders and you will find various equines on there ywhich will probably have been round the world and back with a rider or cart before they're 3.

To be fair there are also some lovely horses on DD, often reasonably priced.

Why would you find this insulting? - I'm not referring to you:D and a horse/pony has no way of choosing what happens to it from birth and it can't speak for it's self - so it is a dumb animal - did you think I meant thick?:D

The term dumb originally referred to something which could not speak, however it is a term which the original meaning has become eclipsed by the modern and offensive meaning.

I don't think we refer to humans who cannot speak as "dumb" these days do we. Or may be you do!

Some history on the mare: When I started bringing her in to be handled she was a nightmare to catch and never wanted to come in, I started lead reining her and as soon as i started riding her she would come cantering over to the gate every day when she saw me! She gets most annoyed if i rise my 18 year old without her.. She wants to work and is thriving and will continue to in her new home and form a wonderful loving bond with her young rider!

When you advertise a horse for sale you are hoping to attract buyers, so you take your pictures and word you ad accordingly. I am always surprised how little thought goes in to it looking at some of the ads posted on the interenet or placed in H&H.
If you are lucky thousands of people will see your ad, some will dismis as its to small, tall, don't like the colour, but they all make a judgement on your ad just you never get to hear it. On here sometimes you do.
You posted the ad, its their oppion, you may not like it but you have sold your horse so job done. If I was you I would think harder before you submit next time.

I think i would question whether the owner has got the age right......I'm wondering if she means rising 4?

This, I have a feeling the age is wrong, the way it's written definitely sounds like it's a mistake on this front. If not it's not my cuppa and wouldn't knowingly buy something working from then but it sounds like it's not had much done. I'm more concerned that op thinks it's okay for a racehorse to go at 2 but wants to question this advert.

I'd question parentage too. We have ID x tb who look the same, but also have Welsh or Arab in. Not seen a cross without anything else in that dinky that age.

Ah edit to say have read thread now. Few kids sat on and mainly led out, so wouldn't put me off. To be honest the one thing I think re-reading is that it was carefully written and over-sold to sound like it had done more than had... but then price reflected the real story and anyone phoning/viewing would have known this. Can't say the ad jumped out to me (not the type I would look for, for myself and nothing to catch eye as awful). Still think OP is the one I'm worrying about the opinion of as far as racehorses go.

There is the most dreadful advert on TV over here asking for donations to help a "Deaf, dumb and blind child". It's dreadful because it must repeat that phrase about 10 times in 1 minute. Yes, I do think the term dumb, for humans who can't speak, is still used but no doubt there is a more PC. term as well these days. Sadly these terms just get corrupted again over time, so a new one is chosen to try and change perception. Look at the changes in the terms for people with mental health problems over the years/centuaries...

CPT, I admit I have much, much clearer memories of Andy Pandy, Bill and Ben and the Wooden Tops than Muffin etc. I guess there's only a couple of years between us. ;)

Hmmm.. just had a brief skim..... Weren't a lot of us debating a certain law a while back?

While some posters seemed to have difficulty in grasping what the law actually states - most seemed to think that there were definate lines set out by it that automatically made one guilty if they were crossed. Some and they were the most vehement - were unmoveable on the point of guilt - being guilt - no excuse: guilty!

So here's my take on this thread - riding a three year old pony type should be illegal - not just a bad idea - flippin' illegal!

I detest the system for T.B's too - though fully appreciating the quest for speed that only two year olds produce - if I was blessed with countless millions - I'd be sponsoring whole meetings for horse not trained until four.

Where about is "over here"?

Sorry, Ireland. There's one for supporting a "Deaf, blind child" too very similar.
People here are very big/kind in donating to charities. Charity events and advertizing is very, very common, most people do their bit to support all sorts of causes. Quite different to UK I've found.

I think people just make less of a song and dance about it over here. Most people I know donate but don't shout it from the rooftops - I don't know anyone who donates to every charity going but I know lots who regularly donate to their chosen charity and is fairly normal for businesses to have a favoured charity.

I'd never donate purely on an ad or someone in my face, it actually completely puts me off.

You wanted toknow what mine do from an early age well here you go I am happy to listen to anyone who thinks I do it wrong. Every six weeks feet are trimmed, annual vaccination and regular say once monthly grooming
Weanling at about 7 months is taught to lead, load and eat hard feed
Yearling is left in the field in a small herd to grow apart from twice in its yearling year I will reenforce the leading loading and if a hot day give a bath and take to a show provided it isnt too hot
Two year olds are encouraged to lead and load be bathed and may go for a walk along the bridleway and will go to three or maybe four shows Otherwise they are out 24/7 with the stable herd.
Three year old birthday so spring of three year old year are walked out along the bridleway and down to the road leading and loading and a bit of despooking by leading through different scenarios, balloons, tarps, umbrellas, washing lines and they have a good show season maybe half a dozen show.
Three year old autumn and winter they will do more of the same really with the addition of being bitted and wearing tack
Spring of their 4 year old year will be long reined and walked on long reins along the main road If for sale I will ask if the new purchaser would like them backed at this point. If they stay with me I will continue to long rein until they have passed their fourth birthday. I then dont show them as 4 year old but concentrate on getting muscle and frame built up to carry a rider
Aurumn of fourth year back and ride away
Spring of 5 th year start schooling and hacking out I may at this point introduce lunging or may not Start a few local dressage tests start them over poles
At 6 I consider them strong and ready to be ridden as an adult horse and can and do do everything

I have never had a bad horse with an attitude problem, never had one that appeared bored, never had one that was sick or sorry and never had one that had work related illnesses. I do have one a small pony that will never be a kids pony as he hates kids but he is a content and happy driving pony for my OH

Why? as you say I sold her..

Am I the only one who doesn't think the pony matches the breed description?!

If that's a id x tb it's got a heck of a lot of growing to do!! Or the person in the photos is a giant thus making pony look small...

It is not bony.

Perhaps you are too used to seeing the overhwelming number of overwieght horses that there are around at the moment.

It looks exactly as an unmuscled, recently back three year old pony should look, in my opinion.

Priceless. The pony is sold at a damned good price for what it is, and you give advice to the seller as to how to word an ad :D ?????

Very good point

Am I alone in feeling uncomfortable about posts continuing to disect/criticize the ad after the seller has expressed her unhappiness about it?

I hadn't seen that specific post as had hit quick reply on my phone - didn't realise how long this thread was either so apologies :o :)

couple of points and sorry if they've been said before but I've not read through the whole thread.

a) why the wincing at a 3 year old being ridden and worked, when TB's are broken at just over 12 months and racing as 2 year olds. Just saying.

b) I knew a pure registered TB who was only 14.1hh, so they can be small.

LJRaz ... hats off to you! There is a lot a assumptions made on here and I couldn't agree more with you.

LJraz, it seems that it only takes one photo to be absolutely slated on this forum, with folk jumping to all sorts of assumptions. Even worse that you didn't have a choice in the matter of posting! It is very unfair to jump to conclusions from one photo, & then express them publically, especially in this world with our sue culture & awareness of libel & slander! You never know who's best friend might just be a lawyer! ;)

Well done to you for coming on & putting folk straight on the story & glad to hear that your little mare went on to find a lovely home!:)
