Is it really so strange?

Hi all,
I am quite affectionate toward my mare and she is the same and likes to be stroked and hugged. However I sometimes kiss her or cuddle her and I was told by another horsey person that it was "really weird" and "unsanitary" Now when I say kiss I mean I give her a peck on the cheekbone occasionally. By hug I just mean put my arms round her neck. Does anyone else do this or is it just me? I know another horsey person who does kiss her horse but the one who said it is weird has informed me none of her friends would dream of being that close to their horse apart from grooming. Just wanted to know what other people are like with their horses.

Haha well I always kiss my boy, on his very smoochable nose :) I do give him cuddles too but he isn't so keen on those so only sometimes. I would ignore your friend, as long as your horse doesn't mind who cares what others think!

think those that dont do it are the strange ones, just about everyone i know kisses, cuddles or scratches their horses how they like it

I must be really weird then as I give mine kisses on their muzzles and they all get cuddles...To be fair my mare thought I was mad when I first did it to her but now just excepts it as being the price she has to pay for being mine lol

See I find the people who let dogs lick them, especially on the face weird and unhygienic! Who knows where that tongue has been and we all know they lick their own backsides.

Giving a horse a kiss a d cuddle is perfectly normal.

Agreed! Horses eat grass and don't lick their own bums, no comparison!! (Unless they've had a sloppy dinner in which case, ugh!)

I mainly kiss her on the muzzle and cheeks. She really likes being cuddled and will butt you if you don't give her enough attention.

Erm, my daughters horse when chilling always has the floppy lower lip and apparently it's the most kissable place ;)
My mare's lower lip goes all floppy too but I'm not sure about kissing that especially when she has strings of grass caught in her teeth hanging out her gob!

I don't kiss and cuddle my horses but I give them a good scratch in their 'sweet spots'. Sometimes that involves putting my arm over the top of them to reach the other side, so it's kind of cuddling. I don't think most horses enjoy kissing and cuddling, but they do learn to tolerate it and they do enjoy closeness and fuss. Just in their own body language. So the wither and bum scratches, that kind of thing. I don't think dogs enjoy lots of kisses and cuddles either. However, having said all that, I don't think it is weird to do it. It is how we humans show affection and just how we learn how horses show it (mutual grooming etc.), they learn how we show it and will tolerate it. I'm not a kissy cuddly person with humans though either. I'm more like a horse - love a groom (hair brush, head and shoulder massage etc.) but not too much smooching. And kissing, I tolerate it! Must have been a horse in my previous life.

Hmmm, my mare would disagree with you. She puts her muzzle up for a kiss, if I don't then she rests her head on my shoulder until I have done so. She hugs you with her head/neck if you happen to be standing in the field. She actively seeks attention!

A cute & velvety muzz should never go unsmooched. That is the law. Smooches make the day.

I tell my big cuddly draft horse that i pay his food bills in return for snogging his nose. I shall remind him it's the law and he's not to stick it in wet copra until after we've smooched.

I always feel sick at dogs licking people's lips, usually because I see my dog eating poo of every variety, and licking even worse things!
My horses on the other hand, all get lots of kisses on the nose and many hugs! I have one nervous boy who wants hugs all day long, it comforts him. My cheeky young connie will always bring his nose up for a kiss !

.... I too am strange.

Don't particularly like kisses from the fiancé but my boy's ... anyday anytime! Love a good horsey cuddle too... at the minute it leaves me looking like the horse and finding hair EVERYWHERE the rest of the day.

Don't find it odd at all.. nearly everybody at my previous yard kissed my boy- he quite often smelt of the yard owners dad's aftershave!!

I don't really do kissing the pony (I will sometimes kiss my hand and then put in on him as a way of passing it on... which DOES sound weird now I type it!) but for some reason I force the cat to tolerate such things (I value my life too much to kiss his face so it's mainly his back when he's not looking and can't bite me!) and cuddles tend to be confined to when I need one to make me feel better. He gets lots of scratches though instead. His favourite is a good session with the rubber curry comb when he's moulting and he will start grooming me back when I do this

I don't think there's anything strange about it and horses, imo, are a fairly hygienic animal. People who let dogs lick their faces and lips are gross though.

My mare loves to have the circular rubber curry comb rubbed in circles and it picks up discs of hair. It picked up around 30 last time she is moulting so much!

They do sometimes eat poo though, esp. foals, and is there anything more kissable than a baby muzzle?

My horse has sweet itch and in the summer, he gets a very itchy sheath - so much so that last year he managed to rip it open with his own teeth. He also has a kissable muzzle, despite it having been goodness knows where!

I'm definitely at the snogger-end of this spectrum though. I like to think it contributes to my healthy immune system...

I must be weird too, I kissed my riding school horse on the muzzle after my lesson :D just to thank him of course.

I've been missing pony cuddles, so I'll grab any opportunity
