IS THIS THE WORST HORSE OWNER CAN YOU TOP THIS ???

Sorry to butt in children but I, and I think another couple of people, asked what the "money being paid each month" for the horse was, and who it was being paid to?

I am confused by that - either she's paying for the horse to be looked after, or she isn't, and should be doing it herself.

I think OP meant that she is paying for everything the horse needs i.e shavings, feed, hay, D.I.Y livery, dentist and rugs ect. but not actually paying for the care OPs sister is giving the horse.

ETA - I assumed when I read the post that the money being paid out was done directly to whoever needed i.e YO, feed store, dentist, farrier ect. I may be wrong though.

Unless there was a contract set up with the owner of the horse either at the outset or at any time since she does not owe you anything, you have provided services without being asked.

I totally agree - under contract law, there has to be an agreement of payment from both parties, otherwise any payment cannot be enforced - which from what has been said, there isnt apart from basic DIY fees

As others have said, the only was to resolve this is for you/your sister or the livery owner to discuss this with the owner, and come to some sort of agreement

Good luck

Why do people have horses and do nothing with them?

[/ QUOTE ]

Why is it your place to judge whether people do anything with their horses? If the horse is well cared for then it's none of anyone else's business

Those of you who think your horse cares if you turn up every day should think again... as long as it is fed, watered and warm, it won't care if it sees you from one week to the next.

[/ QUOTE ]

with respect, surely this only really applies if the horse is on full (possibly part & 5 day) livery?

You are right my horse doesn't give a hoot who feeds him etc as I have him in PL due to my job. If I had him on DIY I would not be able to be down twice a day so would it be someone elses responsibility? I think not. If you cannot look after a horse one way or another, don't bother.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though...

1.If your sister is happy with the arrangement of looking after horse and getting free use...Carry on

2. If Your sister does not want to carry on looking after the Horse tell YO that Owner will have to take responsibility of care of horse from now on.

3. If your Sister wants to be paid for looking after the horse get in touch with owner and negotiate a deal.

If you decide on course of action 1 or 2 my suggestion would be drawing up an agreement with who pays for vet fees in case of injury etc and generally just formalising the agreement.

IS THIS THE WORST HORSE OWNER CAN YOU TOP THIS - No not by a very long chalk and yes of course any case of physical neglect or cruelty or neglect caused by ignorance would make a far worse horse owner.

This one just does not seem to care very much and has never had to face up their responsibilities as someone has always done it for them end of.

Written into my DIY Livery contract is the fact that I or my nominated sharer must come and move my horse (for that interpret work with not just muck out and run) a minimum of 3 times a week unless horse is ill/Lame as certified by a Vetinary professional..... Anyone who leaves a horse rotting as it were or who relys too much on the good grace of the other liveries is asked to leave. Even the owners of the 32 year old Shetland are expected to take her for walks hand graze her a few times a week.

The issue of who does your horse day to day is different to people not doing anything with their horses.

If you are on DIY and can't get to the yard, you should pay your YO to do the horse. In the case of the OP, it's down to the YO to bill the livery client if they are having to look after the horse day to day, or give said client notice. If the YO and other liveries are looking after the horse and no one says a word to the livery about how unacceptable that is, that's their look out. I know that at our yard, if YO has to do something for your horse and you haven't asked for it in advance, you are billed. We had a period in autumn/winter where a couple of liveries were leaving their horses out til 7 or 8pm in the dark, when everything else was in, and the horses were careering round madly. YO kept having to bring them in so after a week of this, she told the liveries to either turn up in daylight or change livery packages so that the horses were brought in for them every day. The YO runs the yard, it is down to her/him to set and enforce rules. I am on a version of assisted DIY; the only thing I have to do for my horse mon-fri is haynets and feed but I know if I can't get there for any reason, my YO will do him as long as I call her. On Tues I was stuck in Cardiff so phoned her at lunch time to ask for her to do him, which is no problem. But maybe the livery in the OP's post doesn't have that much sense

My issue really is with the poster who complained about people having horses then doing nothing with them. It really isn't anyone else's place to judge what we do or don't do with our horses. If I want to keep my horse as an expensive pet to just feed a carrot to on a Sunday, that's my lookout because it's my money to do spend as I see fit. I wouldn't judge what other people do with their horses, or don't do with them, because it's none of my business.

I did actually say in my quoted reply "as long as the horse is looked after". I stand by that. If your horse is looked after, whether that be full livery, part livery or DIY but you having to ask YO or a friend to do him occasionally when you can't get there, it really won't care if it sees you.

I would hazard a guess that the owner HAS put plans in place and is paying YO for full livery... and that the YO just hasnt told the sister. Afterall YO is getting paid to look after it and doing jack all and the sister is doing it for free. Sounds a fab money maker to me

. No YO in their right mind would have that situation on their yard.
