Its just a cob .....

Was having a conversation with a friend on our yard last night discussing turnout and whether or not our horses needed be rugged up just yet as the weather is so mild and our turnout is very sheltered. My cob is in sore need of a good clip and is extremely, whch he wont get till YO gets back from Boekelo, as we are on full livery, so he's been going out rugless. Said friend owns a WB, and she looked down her nose and told me that of course her WB needed a rug, my horse was just a cob .............!!!!!!!

Can anyone tell me why its JUST a cob? Are cobs slightly less inferior horses?
 
Unfortunately some people believe that cobs are inferior, to the point that some people who own Welsh D's will argue that their horses are not cobs! Those of us who are more enlightened, however, know just how amazing and versatile they are!
 
I have a WB - he doesn't need a rug (altho I've weakened with the rain and put a lightweight on). Your neddy is not JUST a cob & def not inferior. (Possibly better as they are hardier and don't need mollycoddling!)

Ignore said friend, she probably a bit jealous as she's already fed up of faffing about with rugs.

I certainly wouldn't look down my nose at cobs. I think they are wonderful. Some horses tend to be warmer and more able to cope in less clement weather than others. I have a wb who does very well in colder weather and a tb who doesn't. Depends on the horse.

My mum thinks all H/W cobs are carthorses or to be ridden by big men. I have to live with this everyday

Why does her WB need a rug again?? Tell her from me there is currently an elderly ex-racer in my field rugless

I was asked not long ago what horse i had when i was at work, the reply was "just a cob!"

But i didnt mean it and then backtracked and then continued alot of warble on how good he was!
 
Some people as just snobs full stop!! Others are too ignorant to know any better. having had both cobs, and sports horses I can't see why
 
Ahh, thank you all. I know he's not just a cob, he is 150% on the roads - I have even hacked him down the A44 to Worcester in front of juggernauts and he did not bat an eyelid. He has showjumped, done dressage, he is a fab hunter and he has done PC duties, including PC camp with daughter. Yes, I also own a warmblood, who I love to pieces, but I love my coblet even more.
 
I have had some wonderful cobs over the years but don't let the current Danish Warmblood hear that. It is a bit like some people looking after horses better than ponies. That annoys me equally.

1) Because some people are stupid.
2)Because some people "grade" the sort of horse you own/ride.
Say,if you jump a WB over BN you are better then someone jumping newcommer height on a cob,it's a comp horse and it;s affiliated which obviously means better

3) Because some people are so obcessed with moving on they dont stop to apriciate how wonderfull the animal they have is.
I guess it's an RS hang up-the TB types are normaly kept for the better riders while the cobs for the novice riders.

But all of that is BS,it is NEVER "just" anything.
It is a horse you are lucky to have in your life,whatever it's breeding

and a genuine horse who will look after a novice rider is worth it's weight in gold even if it never wil get to Hickstead

I certainly don't think that about cobs, I have a WB. What does nark me is when one day I remarked to the owner of a cob on our livery yard that it was my horses birthday that day and he turned around and said that his horse 'wasn't important enough to have a birthday' because it was a cob. I think it was because it didn't have a 'posh' passport so he didn't know its birth date. Really irritated me that did, as I only mentioned it in passing, wouldn't have dreamt of causing offence. Cobs are heavier, and will never have the paces of WB's but then WB's will never have the paces of cobs, each to his own. I hate having to justify myself all the time to over sensitive people though.
 
I've been looked down upon for liking cobs and owning ponies. When I got my second exmoor, I told one acquaintance and her reply was, "When are you going to get a proper horse?" I really didn't know what to say, but I avoided her for the rest of the day, as it's not the done thing to slap a pregnant woman. Doesn't sound much of a friend to me. Does "User Ignore" work in real life?
 
To the OP: tell the woman you're going to hack to some combined training, and then give her a pitiful look and say "Pity you can't come with me, him being just a warmblood"

Fihunt, but welsh Ds aren't cobs! I have owned a cob and loaned a Sec D/Welsh Cob: they are a mile apart, even if they are both brilliantly hardy and versatile much desired horses and ponies!

Is your Cob a WELSH COB or a RIDDEN COB - ie: hogged, trimmed out - and very smart? Notwithstanding, give me any sort of COB any day to a WB. These WBs were originally bred as Carriage Horses. Look at a WB and you will see just how straight they are down the back end - no gaskin and a very upright rear end. They are, however, supposedly, very sensible (dopes on ropes) - which is why people use them for Dressage et al. They have their uses - but .....

As a parting shot - NO, cobs are very definitely NOT inferior horses. I just love HOGGED COBS.

Hi All,

I never quite understand why some riders look down there noses at different types of horses? At the end of the day we are all different, and like different types - and different horses are there to match different riders!

Re the rugging aspect- I have a shetland as companion for my elderly IDxTB when I am out competing on my warmblood! So I have a real mix - the shetland is always nude - hes a tough little dude, my elderly chap requires far more rugging now than he ever did as a young fit competition horse - and my warmblood - well she is just a wimp and needs rugging pretty much all the time - even in summer she can be cold in the night so wears a lightweight fleece or summer sheet, she is currently in a medium turnout and medium weight stable rug - but she is wuss of the century and will drop weight quickly if she is cold.

I think all owners should know their own horse well enough to decide what rugs they should be wearing - and if others dont like it - well thats just up to them, but really, its none of their business!

I love cobs! How I ended up with a WB who knows.... but they are absolutely amazing - they give you the confidence when you need it but they can also be cheeky as well - so it's like riding different horses all at once!

I miss my old cob Ben, he did anything you asked of him and would do his best in anything I asked of him, whether it was PC dressage, hunter trials, showjumping and even tetratholon. Even if he was extremely cow hocked and cantered like a cow

My WB is a British Warmblood - but look at any list of breeds on any horse website and you'll be hard pushed to find them listed!

I've just discovered that my happy hacker cob who can jump a bit is also wicked at mounted games...I've been practising with my daughter and I probably look like a complete prat being 50 and stiff as hell....but what fun!!!! Wouldn't swap her for the world!
 
I'm with Naturally on this one. Whilst I adore both cobs and Section Ds, they are not the same thing. A cob is a type whilst a Welsh Cob is a specific breed. A Welshie could be a cob type but a cob type could not be a Welshie.

Unfortunately 4 years ago while looking for a Sec D as a first choice and a cob as a second I couldn't find a big (15.2hh+), decent one in my price range and ended up with an IDx. I love him to bits, but still hanker after a Welshie.
 
I have an 18month old little cob and shes lovely, i also have 2 welshies (sec a) and a TB. Its onlt the TB that has a light weight turn out on at the moment as she is underweight and shes prone to rain scald (its been raining heavy today

My cob and the littleuns have already gone massivly hairy!! they wont be rugged up this winter, just my TB

SORRY? Are you being facetious or what?
The WELSH SECTION D is the ONLY "proper" Cob.
Ridden (hogged or hairy) Cobs are NOT a Breed, they are a TYPE.
