I've had enough of this horse shopping

Yes I’ve seen him and liked him but he’s a 5hour drive from me. The
guy selling him does seem to have a few though and they all look nice. Maybe time to some research on him

Hi, I went to view some horses at his yard. If you want to pm me I can let you know my experience.

My friend has had the same experiences she gets videos and photos sent and they are nothing like described. Most are doped up, one dished, one was on sales livery because owner was scared of it but she phoned around and found it had nearly killed the owner.

Another one she was going to buy and had asked if it had ever been lame. Apparently it hadnt until she did some digging and it had been.

Another was a hat rack.

Dig about as much as you can and you find alsorts about them. It's quite interesting how people lie. It's also shocking to see how people cant do the basics like tack up properly or present a horse for sale in a filthy state.

I was always taught present the best possible picture. There again we sold top quality home bred Irish draughts which were well schooled and fetching £7000 25 years ago. They were teven taken out in the horsebox and hacked in different locations. There was more spare money around then.

Price of horses has dropped so much these days and unfortunately so have standards.

It's not the stains that puts me off, its the melanomas. Archie is riddled and while they don't bother him too much, I have to knock him out every 2 months to clean all round them in his sheath and hack big bits of his tail off to stop it sticking to the ones in his tail when they rupture. If it's something I can avoid by not owning a grey I'd rather avoid it.

Having lost 2 greys to illness, rather than old age or accident, I too avoid greys now.

Try Mitty Hardy Eventing (find her on FB) only Hereford, very honest and has lots that sort of stamp in regularly.
I know Mitty through riding club - she's in another club in our area. She only has a mare at the moment but is keeping an eye out for me.

Would you consider an exracer? I know of a 16.3hh gelding within an hour of Cardiff.
I was avoiding TB as I think I'm too big for them but I very nearly bought an ex-racer a couple of weeks ago (it's a long story!) but he had no neck and shoulders and I felt very perched on top of him and even though I tried him a few times I didn't feel any more comfortable on him. They're not my favourite just from a shape point of view.

First ad is 18 months old - I've already contacted them and they were really annoyed as keep getting phonecalls. They've tried to remove the ad but they can't for some reason!

I don't want a TB so the second is no good and the Flintshire one is about a 4hr drive.

Sorry, I realise I sound really negative. I do appreciate you all trying to help, I really do. thank you.

Not at all - I quite enjoy a browse, Google Maps said 2hr45min for Flintshire and my Geography is utterly crap so thought I may have been slightly out the way.

I'll keep an eye out for you!

You just have to keep going it’s very depressing but you just have slog on .
I did all this bit and then had three vet failures although to be fair one was a smart horse with a declared problem which I got my vet to take a look at and advise so I was expecting that one not to be straightforward .
Your budget is tight nice horses are making good money easily atm there’s a constraint in supply .
You might find that looking at the end of the summer brings up horses whose owners are off to university something like that my suit you .

I don't think Worcs is a million miles away? Not sure what the dealer's like but he seems a nice type - although 'Will hack alone' does raise some questions!
Yes I've seen him and I'd actually love something with a bit of Welsh but he looks a bit on the slight side for me. If he was 2" taller and that bit chunkier I'd be there like a shot!

He has no depth so would ride small, the mare below is a more suitable stamp but just remembered you cannot have a mare.

That hasn’t crossed my mind. As much as I’d love to, I’ve always assumed they’d only have little ponies, gypsy cobs and maybe some ex-racers. Thanks, I’ll take a look.
Another thought - Hardwick Hall Equestrian often have a few nice looking horses in. Oswestry based I think and maybe stretching your search area but worth a look. I think Hopton Re-hab are re-doing their website atm so perhaps ringing them.

I know you've said no TBs, but would you consider an ex-national hunt racer, as they're bred to carry more weight and are generally a more robust build? Most people think mine is a sport horse rather than full TB as she doesn't have the super narrow frame that flat racers tend to. She was also a rubbish racer so didn't do much!

I very nearly bought one a fortnight ago. He was everything I wanted but I felt so perched on top of him that I didn't feel safe. I think I'd be the same on any TB unless they had a very substantial neck and shoulder. If any TB was going to make me change my mind it would have been him. He was also a rubbish racer which made him so lovely as he was quite happy for others to go trotting / cantering off in front of him and just toddled along at his own pace.

Mmm, what you are looking for is in high demand. If you increased (doubled) your budget you would be in a better ball park and would be less likely to be disappointed in what you are seeing I think. 5k for what you seem to be seeking is tricky, it doesn't surprise me they mainly have issues to be honest.

I feel your pain, I've never enjoyed horse shopping.
I actually think your budget is fine, any fit healthy horse should be able to do what you're asking (80/90cm jumping and unaffiliated dressage).
I'll have a look :)

Try Hesyetri Horses! I follow them on Facebook & intend on send my youngster to them for starting when the time comes :) They are in Gloucester & usually have some lovely horses for sale.

the trouble with this search is there are lots of horses that look suitable in the south of the country so many hours of travelling required as i believe annagain is cardiff area. i have also been searching but have discounted those in the south...i am sure he is out there somewhere and hopefully in wales...

horsequest 209066, very brief ad and over budget but if close could be worth a look
