BUT - did you know (according to the person with Jamie) that these horses are "bred to buck" - no one mentioned that they had a b100dy great strap around the latter part of their tummy!! Mmmmm, I wonder if anyone knows of a horse that is "bred to buck".

As Jamie isn't a horsey person, he took it all in and believed what they said - I wonder how many other viewers did??

Very good and reminder of how many working horses there are in the USA on ranches and feed lots .. posibly more than anywhere else in the world... and yes the livestock that is used in the rodeos is specialy bred for that purpose both the bulls and the bucking horses ..
 
i think that the strap just encourages a more exaggerated buck....but am not entirely certain of this. doesn't suprise me that they can breed for this- if you had a horse than broncked like a maniac you wouldn't breed from it as you'd be worried of passing the trait on wouldn't you? well i guess here they WOULD specifically breed from them....

they select horses that have that temprement and breed from them just like you would for say jumping or speed

the strap makes them buck but has to be relised quickly otherwise the horses get used to them and it looses its effect
the pick up riders try to loosen them as they get the rider off

Slinky, rodeo horses in Argentina don't have the strap and they don't actually buck 'properly'. They tend to rear and plunge; Like this-

And for those HHOers who have never actually been to a rodeo and insist it's cruel, they'll be delighted to hear that horses often go over backwards on the riders and hurt them rather badly.

they have strings of these bucking horses, so an owner will be paid to bring his bucking horses to the rodeo. They are usually very well looked after, and they are bred from horses that buck - it's their job and thats what they know. the strap is on to encourage them to buck more and higher.
