We are at the very start of our dressage and have managed a few unaffiliated comps at intro and prelim (63% at our first prelim and we lost alot of marks on the canter work as needs alot of work!) but a lot of 7s , the judges seem to love him and we have a very positive comments, he's a fully registered welsh D 6 years old with very little milage 9had him since he was 6 months old), the finer type, he also has lovely paces and moves beautifully. Pony is very green but we are about to start having regular lessons and planning on joining BD ready for October in time for the winter season :) We have hired a trailer, found an awesome venue and have made a bit of extra time for competing and aiming to get out around 1 - 2 x per month. My ultimate aim is petplan and maybe regionals one day! At the end of the day i just want to have fun competing him :)
So, i am planning on turning him out plaited and trimmed up. So, hoping to wear my navy jacket and white stock. I don't want to go all out and be all the gear no idea, we are starting at the very beginning!! so, would it look okay if we went for white jods, plain black boots, navy jacket - i currently have a dublin one which is plain navy, velvet collar with silver buttons, had it a while so looking to replace soon as could do with a new one but before investing am going to see how we get on first!), white stock, - gloves - i don't really want white so was thinking maybe black or navy or would this look odd?! horse will be plaited (he's very dark bay with 3 long stockings and a blaze, black tack (dressage saddle) white square, patent cavesson noseband (its subtle with black lining and not overly wide) a thin 1/2" crystal browband in gold and clear. Never been to an affiliated dressage comp before so any other tips would be good!! Also anything i buy i need to make sure it lasts us a while!
Thank you!!

What you have outlined is perfect. Gloves can be any colour these days. Although I still wear white, black or navy would be fine.
This is us at regionals, much as you describe except i wear a white tie instead of stock.

Thank you! I like the look of your wife's turnout. What colour are the gloves and stock? Looks good with the navy blue

If you aiming for Petplans, join now- its free for prelim level as you both just join as associate members.
That way if you get your scores you could join in time for Area Festivals this year!

ps turnout sounds fine

I would double check this as although it used to be the case I'm not sure if it's still true with the new structure. I think associates can only enter prelim gold and not bronze (and bronze is the section that you need to get scores in for AF).

Outfit sounds perfect. Don't forget a bridle number (you can get them quite cheap on ebay). I wear gloves that are mainly navy with a bit of white on them - couldn't bring myself to wear completely white ones. (think mine are roeckl Madrid gloves in navy and white - pricy but lovely, and only used on show days).

Welcome to the wonderful (and confusing) world of BD, it's nowhere near as scary and intimidating as some people make out or think!

100% is correct this is what i have done and i will pay full fees in Sept when i want to take up my Petplan entries
I have my petplan email confirming

I'm an 'all the gear no idea' sort of person  so I say go for whatever you want to wear that's within the rules! I started out with my navy cutaway (full wool which is beautiful but I melted in it :o), switched to a navy shires one and now wear a black technical fabric jacket, with a new grey one on the way! Let this be a warning the world of dressage is full of very pretty expensive things which make you say 'want' with alarming frequency .

This also plots our tack adjustments in the 3 years we've been doing BD, from brown tack, to black, to current excessively expensive saddle which was the only one which fitted us both :o:eek:...

Your planned outfit sounds perfect, just don't forget a number disk somewhere and dark gloves will be fine. Also to add there is no rule that you have to be trimmed and plaited, obviously you can but I see lots of natives still au natural too :).

That's good, I thought it was just gold, not sure where I got that from! :)

We started doing Team Quest so were dressed in team colurs (one of the few), ended up doing a few prelims and probably broke all the rules by *shock* wearing a tweed with a bling browband at one point :D We have migrated from tweed/skull with velvet cap/brown tack inc jump saddle to black tack inc dressage saddle/navy jacket/smart ayr 8 hat and bling :D I plait as horse has a total fro otherwise despite being a twiggy TB, I laos have the same tan gloves as above (mine are roeckl) and also have a navy pair for superhot days and a black insulated pair for freezing winters :D A friend who is a listed judge said they can still tell what your hands are doing whatever the colour of your gloves ;) We do prelim/novice so no mega talent just having fun :D

Early days of TQ, swine wouldn't let me plait so excuse the fro..

Mine isn't a proper cob - I'm led to believe he's Connie x ID. He's a little horse with v little feather + quite pony-like so will def plait though might leave forelock loose. I shall be in tweed, beige breeches, black tack + checked stock with boring skull cap since its the only hat I own!
