Rhodium who won 4yo but didnt event went on to be a HOYS show hack - apparently it never really jumped very well anyway!!!

Rhodium has been with us for several years. He has a very good jump, but his owner prefers to do dressage on him now! Very talented little horse and a lovely ride - and a superb temperament.

Post has changed direction a bit but I think the classes are a very good idea. I did 3 with buster last year and our best result was 13th so not top class but they were used as an education for him. This proved very usfull when he went pointing as he was one of the best behaves and most chilled out 5 yos in the race! And he wasn't like that before the BYEH classes!

I think another aspect of the "confusion" might be that while it's often relatively easy to agree on a standout performer, it's not so easy to decide what makes "almost great". so after the first placing or two you're likely to see more and more subjectivity both within a single competition and between the same horses competing at different venues. Once you start "collecting imperfections" you're going to get into more disagreement about what matters and what doesn't, based as much on personal experience than anything else. So a judge that had a top horse that was crooked but stayed sound for ever might not be as put off by a slightly off straight youngster, whereas another might count anything other than dead straight as a deal breaker.

The same subject effectively came up on another thread, about specific judges refusing to give a mark above 6 for any movement where the horse was behind the vertical. I bet there was some screaming when that happened, as I'm sure the same people would have got much better marks under other judges who didn't consider that particular fault to be a deal breaker.

You know the old saying, ask two horsemen, get three opinions. ;)
