Well after the complete high of taking Harry XC at Richmond last weekend, it was quickly followed up by a fab flatwork lesson, and a brilliant SJ session. So with a SJ competiton pencilled in, and a couple of ODE's in the pipeline everything was going so well :). Until yesterday. Took Harry out for a hack, and then went to have a play in my XC paddock, he had one of his 'moments' he can be prone to, which normally cause no problems, but for some reason as he reared up his poll hit my right cheek, somehow smashing my buckle from my HS1 into my chin. I managed to stick on long enough to do an ungainly slither to the ground where all I could see was alot of blood :eek:. Bleeding profusely with a very sore cheek/ear it was off to A&E I went. Luckily I was seen quickly as I was bleeding everywhere and was blatantly in quite alot of pain :rolleyes::o. Chin cleaned and well morphiened up, into x-ray I went, where I had lots of pictures taken from all different angles, and then went into a special x-ray machine where it moves around your head, I guess to give an all round picture. At this point chin started bleeding again all over said posh x-ray machine :o!!!!! Deciding they had to do something with my chin they glued it whilst I was waiting for the x-ray results.

Eventually in comes a surgeon telling me I had broken my jaw (near my ear) and it had displaced my lower jaw. So off to the ward (with more morphiene!) to await some surgery to put some screws into my upper and lower jaw bones, and then put tight elastic bands on to try align my jaw :eek:. So eventually (read that as the middle of the night) off I went to theater. After vaguely coming round in excruciating pain (more painkillers!) I made it back to the ward at 2am this morning. Where the 2 old people were both snoring so loudly it made sleep impossible, and then another patient arrived in the bed opposite me about 1 hour after I got back to the ward. Needless to say I didn't get a wink of sleep :(.

Surgeon had another look at me this morning and decided the elastic bands (look just like plaiting bands!!!!) weren't strong enough to do the job, so I had to have then swapped over to stronger ones which was not comfortable!!!!! Allowed home just after lunch thank god as I think I would have howled if I had had to stay another night :o!

So now I can't eat any solid food for 6 weeks, which serverly limits what I am going to be able to eat (the only soup I like is Heinz tomato, I hate mash potato, and ATM can't open my mouth enouth to eat a yoghurt!). I also have to make sure I force my mouth into it's proper bite position as my lower jaw wants to go to the right (screws and bands are helping, but I have to keep making sure I have my mouth in the correct position!). And have enough painkillers to knock out an elephant (hence I apologise if this makes no sense)!!!!! Plus I cannot speak properly due to my mouth being just about clamped together (some may see this as an advantage I suppose :rolleyes:!!)

So I now have to go back to the hospital on Tuesday to have a CT scan to see if the screws and bands are holding. If they aren't holding I will have to go back on Thursday to get the whole right side of my jaw plated :eek::(!!!! Fingers crossed it won't come to that as I am already banned for riding for a minimum of 6 weeks :( (looks like no more eventing for me, and means I will miss my regional final :() I am also due to start my Uni degree a week on Monday, so am certainly going to look like the special needs kid (although you can't see the screws, they are quite big so you can see the bulges, plus my mouth is shut with elastic bands!!!), and if I need it plating will probs miss the beginning of my course :(.

So any Ideas what to do with my horses??? Murphy is advertised (although not alot of interest) but now I can't speak down the phone, so Mother willl have to field calls, and I can't show him off, if anybody wants to see him. Harry needs to be kept going so thinking I may have to send them to other riders until I am back in action.

Also any food ideas would be appreciated. I can't be too sugary as I cannot brush my teeth :o, and just have to mouthwash with some hideous stuff from the hospital 4 times a day. At the moment I can only drink things, but hoping soon I will beable to have mashed things :o!!!

So feeling somewhat sorry for myself I only have tomato soup, painkillers, and mouthwash on affer if you have made it this far :o:(!

OMG :eek:

What a freak accident! How unlucky!

How about having a smoothie? You could use a straw, but not too much because of the sugar. Darn, eating could be tricky :(

Hope you get well soon, and get the horses sorted, but no real suggestions from me :o

J&C

omg that sounds really painful only thing i can suggest is maybe using a straw thats what a friend had to do when she damaged her fac. ice cream? fingers crossed you recover soon

poor poor you! Sounds awful

I've been feeling sorry for myself as I have a load of mouth ulcers and can't open my mouth (was teaching like a ventriloquist today! not great!). So now feel like I've been moaning for nothing compared to you! What a war wound!

Get someone to go out and buy you a range of the covent garden soups. some of them are very nice! Chicken muligatawny is my favourite! :)

Eeek, sounds really painful :(
I got faceplanted xc schooling a while ago and was unable to open my mouth beyond a thin slither for about 2 weeks and it was horrid- I survived on soup, smoothies and chocolate milkshake, all through a straw

protein shakes are good! mix them with frozen yogurt, banana and orange juice in a blender! the spirutein ones are very tasty and healthy

owwwww!! poor you!! what about slim-fast type things - at least they have vits & mins and things. ((hugs)) - gentle ones!

eta...forget the yukky slimfast - paddi22's idea is better!

Eeek! All that sounds even more horrific in all the gory detail :( What rotten luck.
Re food - can you not liquidise food you do like? What are your favourite things to eat. I like most soups are you sure no others you could force down? There's a hoge variety out there.
No idea what to suggest re the horses - any of your trainers that would take them?

Oh no, sounds very painful. Sending lots of healing vibes.

Don't dismiss baby food, doesn't taste the greatest but will stop you passing out from lack of food.

one healthy option - banana milkshake - no sugar, use honey and ice cubes. Very good for you, high energy. However 6 weeks is going to be get boring - how about contacting your local Cambridge Diet person because you can get a variety of shakes (never liked the soups but hey ho!) and its balanced. Not the most interesting but at least you will be getting the right nutrients. Cambridge diet over Lighter life as its half the price!

Really sorry to hear about your accident. Your graphic description brought back many bad memories of enforced hospital stays. To think I had never seen the inside of a hospital till my early 20's. Never looked back since!

and on the positive side, if you stick to the CD diet for 6 weeks you will see a massive weight loss, unless of course, you eek out the boredom with a fair amount of red wine.... !

Lots of get better soon vibes from the WTW clan!! Hmm - you could try blending some meals like babies do? Hmmm, that does sound rather disgusting, just a thought :p or you could try protein shakes, my son takes them when he has big swimming galas coming up - and they provide you with all minerals etc. But again - pretty disgusting. Get well soon! :)

owch- CM that sounds VERY VERY painful :(

i'd be rubbish in your shoes i hate mushed up food and soups :(
erm.. i know you don't like mashed potato but what about mashed butternut squash or carrots or something like that?

you could maybe have something like slimfast so that you know you are having all of your vitamins and minerals?

God how horrible. I fractured my jaw in a similar fashion (poll to chin...crunch) but did not have it screwed/plated etc because OH said I was being pathetic and there was nothing wrong with me....8 weeks later I went to the dental hospital as it still hurt, they x-rayed, said it was fractured but healing straight enough not to bother doing anything too - and now when I yawn/open my mouth wide the right hand side of my jaw partially dislocates!

Luckily I do like mashed potato, and fruit, and also survived on covent garden soup, smoothies, mash etc.

Oh gosh you poor thing! At least we are at the tail end of the season and the weather isnt exactly pleasant!

I guess try and keep positive and enjoy the break?

Food wise - I think your blender may see some serious action over the next few weeks!

Take care of yourself and I hope you make a speedy recovery! Don't worry about horses too much, look after number 1 and it won't harm them to be put on the back burner whilst you fix :-)

Ouch poor you. My brother smashed his jaw badly and had it wired for months and months. The only way he could get enough calories was to add double cream to some things. The only thing he reall craved was a nice chewy mars bar!

Oh my goodness!! :eek:

Sounds horrific! And very very sore :( Lots of vibes coming your way, very scary to think that it might need plated! :eek:

On the food front, not sure what to offer, how about Liquidising different types of food? Am also told baby food is nice! Or you could get those protein powders and add into flavoured milk?

Again, ouchies!! :(

Gosh that sounds horrible - really hope you are feeling better soon!

When my Dad was really ill and couldn't eat he was having complan shakes three times a day which have all the vitamins and stuff in you would normally get from food - they are mega calorific though as basically all your calories for the day in a drink!!!

When I had my lips stitched up (not together I add!) from falling off and seeing the wrong side of a stud (as in shoe not stallion!) I looked like I had failed badly against Tyson. Aside from soup and a milk shake, I also lived off slushy scrambled egg. I could just about suck it off a teaspoon. The same appllies for rice pudding. Admitingly, I was fine after 1 week, so I wish you good healing vibes to speed up your potential 6 weeks!!

Sounds nasty, good luck. Heal fast! x

What a horrid accident, poor you :( My only suggestions are SOUP - so easy to make. plenty of variety and healthy if you can't eat anything else for weeks :eek::eek: Could you send Murphy to a local professional to sell for you, probably expensive but may be a useful alternative to your mum ! And could you not turn Harry away until you are feeling better and your poor jaw is healed? Lots of get well vibes and sympathetic, gentle hugs.

OMG!!! How awful! 6 weeks is going to be an eternity. I hope you are not in pain for that long though - what a bloomin inconvenience for you. I quite like milkshakes and mushy stuff so not sure what to suggest. My jaw has just clamped up thinking about you. Big hugs get better soonx

Flipping ouch!

Glad you're sort of, comparatively okay.

Food:

Complan;
Super whizzed smoothies;
Some baby foods are very nice from what I remember (orange breakfast cereal);
Scrambled eggs (very mushed);
Oxo/Bovril.

Getting enough protein will be the interesting part
