how utterly depressing
There are lots of sports that they could do that don't involve animals.
Yes, there is this video too

His statement on his FB page was very poor.
And then that horse broke it's leg at Hickstead last year and had to be put down.Only come across him because of this but it seems he got lucky with the horse that he did hickstead derby with last year with regards to getting to that level.
On his Facebook page. Here is what he said:Haven’t seen a statement from him. Where is it posted?

Here's more of that horse's story:

The horse broke its leg cantering on the flat right in front of us, didn’t land awkwardly or anything, so don’t think he can be blamed for that. This is a different kettle of fish & is just too awful

There are reports that they were having trouble keeping the horse sound on that leg, even while at the show :/
The thing about these sudden broken legs is that they don't happen without underlying damage (a hairline fracture). It tends to be a sign of overtraining. That may be done unwittingly. There's been a lot of research done recently that shows that this is what's behind 'bad step' injuries.Obviously I can't verify that because I was thinking similar to you, freak fall on the flat. But concerning if it is correct.
Woweee *imagines the insurance premiums* 😂
Some people only see the horses as a means to an end - can't say it's a revelation. Just very sad. I see this at all my local shows too. People doing three + rounds without a thought for how tired the horse is. Selfish bstards.
Gosh, I am now aware of horse show divas and eye candy jumpers 😳
Our local venue has a permanent 'enter 2 rounds, get 2 free' offer on. Drives me nuts!

Oh I am sorry!!! Horse Show Divas is pretty cringe worthy and the Eye Candy folks... well.... they're 'speshul' as we are wont to say over here.
I will admit the sex addiction part of his back story (on Horse Show Diva) was eye opening (and shutting pretty quickly too)

Is that why the safe sport thing got suggested?
If this is clear round, I can't see much of a problem? Most showjumpers would expect to enter two classes a day, and hopefully do two jump offs, so 4 rounds doesn't seem too bad.
This poor horse was exhausted and over faced, clearly the rider was in the wrong and it was sickening to watch.
