Laminitis? SOS

Poor lad- possibly it would cook kidneys as well (I've heard it's contraindicated for liver issues) but I've found boswellia very useful for arthritic problems longer term, that might be an option for the sidebone?
Hopefully this is a one-off and he rallies quickly.

Sorry yes I know you do it's just unbelievably hurtful to be accused off flying off for my next deal, or moving a horse that's not just a bit lame but actually sick, across the country. As if I'm that heartless or stupid.

Me sitting around nursing Atlas and not going to work is not going to help. Me going to work, earning the money to pay for Atlas and to pay for him having all the care in the world- that's helpful.

As it happens I've just signed the paperwork to drop the circa 4k to have him hospitalized, IV fluid and all the care he can get despite the fact he's, as it stands, not going to do much of a job for me.

But hey, if someone else wants to have a shot with him and do better hopefully they will raise their hand ;)
You really don't have to justify what you do M. It's pretty obvious you care very very much about Atlas and are also a responsible owner. Having a job and needing to move around are not things to apologise for. Atlas wants for nothing. I'm sorry you're having such a sh1tty year x

Allergies/intolerances can provoke some some weird and scary symptoms which often resolve spontaneously as I know personally being highly histamine intolerant. Diet errors have had me bedridden with extreme digestive reactions, racing heart, joint and muscle pain and complete exhaustion which all went away in a few hours or a few days by themselves. I may be way out but thought it was worth mentioning if nothing is found. Whatever it is you and Atlas have my sympathy. Sending lots of healing vibes.

Unnecessary

Michen has had a run of appalling luck recently. If you can't be supportive then scroll on by.
It was meant to be a realistic post. M has been through the mill with horses and life, it's not sustainable forever.
I meant she needs to consider these things.
And the bigger picture, flying off for work for example, yes she's his owner but also how much of an impact does this have on her work performance?
Sleep deprivation? General fatigue life balance as well as the financial aspect.
As she said herself possibly for a lame horse with an un sure future.

Atlas is a young horse and it's not normal run of a mill for a youngster to have to many health issues. Again something to consider.

Michen you know I don't doubt your integrity one bit.

Jesus mate I can’t even. I have no useful advice/knowledge but you will make the right call. I don’t know anyone who gives their horses better care. You put me to shame and I think I’m pretty good!

For what it’s worth, I think if he is poorly, a full livery situation is better than a DIY type. Even if your job didn’t involve travel, a horse on a good livery yard will have eye on a lot more than DIY. I have my horses at home and work from home but they would still be seen/checked more on full livery on a yard with staff there all day every day!

Once past this acute phase, if this issue is fixed and he would come sound with rest but could not do the job you need, you could always get him right then find him a nice low level home. Maybe someone you know knows someone who would like a nice trail horse to potter around on gently or something like that.

So sorry you are hitting issues with lovely Atlas. It sounds like he is in very good hands and I think your plans sound very sensible.
You are an experienced horsewoman who has consistently made sound and considered judgements for her horses - both when things are going well & when things are not going well.
Fingers crossed he improves soon and you get to the bottom of whatever’s caused this. Big hugs.

One thing I have no doubt about Michen, is that your animals will get the best care you can get for them.
If anyone thinks otherwise they haven’t been following you. Please ignore!!!

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. Sending all the best to you and Atlas. I hope so much you get some good news today.

I also saw the vet that fell in love with him. He’s kinda gruff and old school and just said a simple “this horse is worth getting fixed up”.
Oh Michen....I'm a bit of a mess today anyway but that made me cry. It's good to know you've got the vet in your corner. I really, really hope you can get to the bottom of this, even if it's just so you can have a better guess at whether it'll happen again. You're doing everything humanly possible for him so please don't doubt your own decision making. I know you pay through the nose for everything in the States but at least it means he gets fantastic care.

With Atlas and the move and everything - do try to remember to take twenty minutes for the occasional cup of coffee in the sun, or a chat with a friend. You can't keep going at 100mph all the time.

I've seen allergies, God have i seen them, at deaths door one minute, thinking its a gonna, vet there quick. Put in stable recovered by time vet arrived.

One time it was diagnosed as colic, eventually it clicked it was some kind of fly same time of day always, put horse on stable at time of day , never repeated, and I mean flat out on floor legs ridged, annafalactic sorry can't spell.

Yes seen some pretty spectacular events that did resolve, I wish with all my heart it goes that way this time.

In this case I would first suspect glue for shoes. That stuff gives off awful fumes right under nose.

Well just wild guessing, but what else can you do, been there so many times, lived to tell the tale, just hoping he gets comfortable soon and some conclusions can show a way forwards for both of you.

Also the work , horse balance thing and life in general stress, hold strong in there M hoping the vets can get diagnoses quickly

Good grief Michen, it doesn’t rain, but it pours. He is such a lucky boy to have you as an owner, surely your luck has to change soon, we all know you will do right by Atlas, cyber hugs going your way.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you, this is so incredibly tough, but I’ve watched your thread and I know you’ll make the right decision.

I was in a very similar situation this time last year, albeit the horse was 17 years old, so you’re not alone. We poured the money into him and he dropped dead the day he was supposed to go home, luckily he was brighter and more himself when he went.

With him it was also a case of could be a one-off, or could drop tomorrow. Unfortunately, it was the latter. I had suspected as much, so go with your gut on this one. I hope you’re both all better soon!

Another who has just seen this thread - sorry to see he's putting you through the mill again :(.

Ignore the ridiculous comment. We all have to work to pay for our horses - I often have to 'jet off' (or train...or car) for client work / deals / general life stuff. If I didn't I wouldn't be able to afford this mad hobby, vet bills and great care that all mine receive. Horses are usually happy to see 'their' human but couldn't care less who is looking after the day-to-day.

You have done far more for your horses than most would. Your constant care (and worrying!) is evident to 99.9% of us. Whatever decision you make for Atlas will be the right one and we'll be here to send virtual support and hugs.

Thank you everyone. Things continued to evolve through the night sadly not in the direction we hoped.

I will see what the update is this morning but I am fully prepared that we will be saying goodbye.

I’m just kind of in shock, a few days ago I thought I just had a lame horse. Even yesterday morning it wasn’t even on my radar that he could be actually sick.

Oh, god, Michen. So sorry to read this. Whatever happens, we are all here for you.
