Laminitis? SOS

That's a thing? Goodness.. ok.

Salmonella is one of the things we've tested for.
Yes apparently so 🙁 Since then I have always rinsed my hay thoroughly. As he’s tested negative thats one thing off the list.

Another who thinks you letting him have a few days at the vets is the right decision, it gives you a bit of space to breathe, and the vets can make sure he’s kept comfortable. Whatever the outcome, you know you did your best for him. I so hope he turns a corner, will be thinking of you 🫂

He’s not tested negative for salmonella yet.. that’s pending. Did your horse make it? So sorry that happened to you.

Yes he did but he was quite poorly and when he collapsed I thought I was going to lose him. Once we treated him (antibiotics I think, but it was a long time ago) he picked up quickly. But lost a heap of weight in the process. Sadly lost him six years later at 24.

His white cell count has plummeted so that’s not great but the kidneys seem to be less of a concern right now.

Current best guess is salmonella. Sticking with the plan of do whatever we can but if laminitis or pneumonia starts up that’s it.

He is apparently still happily stuffing his face which the vets are extremely surprised at given he should be feeling very sick with a 104 temp! Now in ice boots on all four feet.

He’s got the IV antibiotics and plasma going so we shall see.

Oh Michen. My heart goes out to you and think you've made the right call here. I swear 2025 is some absolutely cruel joke. I don't have anything to add or say other than I am so sorry you are going through all of this.

On a separate note, mine is EPM as well and I watch him like a hawk. I severely worry about the day of a relapse as cant import the drugs easily. I hope you get some answers and he pulls through.

It's making me even more heartbroken to be leaving Colorado, I have such great people here, the offers of help and support is immense. It's so sad to combine leaving somewhere I love (we've literally moved out, our stuff is packed across truck, trailer, second car, one car is already in California) and you throw that into the mix with a horse that may not make it and gosh... mind is blown.

I hope he makes it. I just love that little horse. It's not a big, Boggle type of love, how could it be, but I really appreciate him for what he is and I have to believe that a horse who can make a miraculous, full recovery from EPM can come back from this too.

Come on Atlas!!

Have you looked at the possibility of Equine granulocytic anaplasmosis (EGA)? Seems that the symptoms fit, and with quick treatment horses fully recover.
Wishing you all the best with him

EGA Symptoms:
  • Fever (102–105°F), often fluctuating.
  • Depression, loss of appetite.
  • Reluctance to move, stiffness, muscle tremors (due to inflammation/vasculitis).
  • Swelling (edema) of legs, underside, or around eyes.
  • Petechiae (tiny red spots on gums/eyes from small hemorrhages).
  • Low white cell count, low platelets, anemia on bloodwork.
  • Dark urine (from hemolysis or secondary muscle involvement).

Hey, I am not really throwing anything out there cause wise as I know all the diagnostics that can be done, have been done. I have complete trust in his vet (who is also a personal friend) and I just know that she has this to the very best she can.

She saved him from 1,000 miles away earlier this year so there is no one I trust more!

Thanks so much for the well wishes I really appreciate it and I'm sure Atlas would too (if he wasn't too busy..eating).

ETA just saw your post- thanks. I know if there is a suspicion of it they will be on it. Quite a few of those things don't fit and also where we are located comes into play too.

Robert eustus (I may of spelt that wrong) and some of his papers are well worth a read.
Most people think lami rotation of pedal bone, fat horse/pony but there's more to it.
He first started exploring it back in the day when cold hosing and bute was a thing, I think late 80s/early 90s
There was I think a lot of links to food people originally thought lami safe that were actually not for example, and about how the hoof and it's set up reacted to episodes and the whole sole was effected.
I'm sure I recall you mentioning something about his frogs before?
Alot of his symptoms just don't tie in with things like salmonella.
He's a strong character, baffling, somewhat but I do hope he comes through the night well.

I've just seen all this and just wanted to say how sorry I am at you facing this. Having only recently been on that roller coaster with the cat it's awful trying to decide what to do. Everything crossed for him. Hope everything else with the move goes ok. God knows, you deserve some luck!

Please, he has the best vets and care he can get. At this point it’s all still a guessing game.

Viruses can present weirdly, Boggle never tested positive for one but clearly had “something”. Actually he is presenting quite similar to salmonella (do you believe that your knowledge is superior to the internal medicine specialist who’s looking at him?) I’m simply not posting all his changing symptoms as things are progressing. I am putting bits of info in here keeping it high level but ultimately he is in front of the vets with all the bloodwork you could wish for and that’s all we can go on at this stage.

I’m sorry to be rude, I don’t mean to be, but you’ve gone from accusing me of travelling this horse to CA while sick, to caring more about my next sales deal, to me not being functional at work (I’ll just add that our fiscal year is a week off ending and despite a year that would finish off most people mentally, I’ve done 205% of my quota- and that’s what allows me to even DO this for Atlas), to give him to someone else for them to have a go, to your vets are wrong.

I’m not going to engage with it further but I am grateful for any good vibes going Atlas’ way and know I’m doing what I can for him.

The vets who have eyes on the horse definitely are in the best (and only) position to diagnose. I know random people on the internet 8000 miles away are trying to be helpful (maybe in weird ways) but I don’t think Michen is find armchair dx all that helpful.

If the wee guy is eating, he’s fighting. We’re all hoping he pulls through and know you’ll make the right decision either way.

So sorry to read all this Michen.

By the sounds of it you've spent enough on Boggle & Atlas that could have bought you a house, you are forever seeking the best care for them regardless of cost. Nobody can question your dedication to your animals.

I hope you get some answers soon and should the outcome not be what you are wishing for I hope you can take comfort from knowing you have done far more than many others could (or would!) have done. Take care X

Why bring work and sales targets into it? We all know your driven and that's great.
And actually I think I was right to raise concerns over travelling him on the basis he's now in the vets.
Be as rude as you like it's a forum full of opinion and your upset and stressed and I get that too. But I'm not going to sugar coat things. And like everyone else can post my thoughts.
Weather any one agrees or not that's their choice.
Ultimately the horses well being and getting better , and you are the important things.

Any person that can throw ideas around isn't a bad thing you've had 2 horses drastically ill with few answers in a short space of time, somewhere out there, there has to be an answer who cares how it's found. As you've just said it's a guessing game.

I hope atlas tomorrow is showing more signs of improvement.

I bought it into the equation because one of your posts was questioning the ability to do my job, another was telling me off for doing my job, and neither are fair or true. You were not right to raise that concern, of COURSE I was never going to travel him based on how I found him yesterday AM. Whether it was a hoof issue or not, he was clearly not in a fit state to travel. I'm not an idiot. I am not a cruel, selfish owner.

I need to stop rising to this particularly as I'm clearly over emotional and it's just upsetting and it takes away from all the wonderful support from everyone else to have one person who just seems intent on finding fault whatever I do.

Thank you for all of your positive comments and I hope you can refrain from anymore that are less so.
