Hi all, I know that this is similar to other threads.... Does anyone know of anyone looking for a good natured companion horse on loan. Short or long term. He's a big horse but easy to handle and a good doer.

I urgently need a new home for him, it will be a loan only but if you want to keep him forever than that is fine!

Please help if you can.

Im not in a position to offer a home as my fields are full but let us know abit more info...where abouts you are (roughly) and I will ask about for you...hope you find somewhere

Where abouts are you? (pm me)
As I have fields you could use if you're local if that helps you out, but I have too many to put enough time into a loan, it wouldn't be fair.

I'm in bucks, near Aylesbury. Sadly it's financial reasons that he has to go, he doesn't need a lot of time but I can check him daily if he's not too far away. Oh wow, slight hope is starting to creep in!!

I'm in oxford so fairly near, I'll ask around for you. I suggest you post the same thing on facebook groups, (search oxfordshire horse riders/equestrian for sale and swap oxfordshire etc - there's several) you'll find somewhere local then, and preloved is worth a try. I'd love to have him just don't have time. If you find somewhere temporary I could have him next march time once I've moved yards. Hope you find somewhere - let us know what happens!

Just thought.. You could speak the blue cross perhaps? They should be able to take him off your hands then rehome him somewhere suitable. Worth a try!

Will he be pts if a new home isn't found by saturday? As I said, I'll be looking for a companion next march time, sorry I can't be any more of a help :(

I have heard blood banks pts anyway at 15...

No they don't. They keep them for life. That may be 15 years, or it may be 25 years. Obviously, if a horse sustained a fracture or bad injury that required prolonged box rest or expensive medical attention, they would PTS. They must be field sound without bute, but so long as they stay that way, they keep them until their quality of life deteriorates.

Sorry OP but if he was mine I would PTS. He's 18 and has a long term illness that means sooner or later he'll be in pain. If you pass him on you don't know how he'll be looked after, better to take the steps yourself and know that he ended loved and in a familiar place.

I also agree with this, although it is very, very hard.

i also agree with pts....

who knows who will get their hands on him......look at the tic toc thread??

ANY BAD dealer could - bute - ride - sell........... horrible thought.

They wont take him... he is too old..

What is he like out with other horses ? does he play ? or is he a just leave me alone please ?

How long do you realistically need him to be looked after for ?

He'll sometimes play, he is good with others, never kicks or bites. Sometimes makes faces if there is food involved but usually happy enough at the bottom of the pecking order.

Realistically, forever would be great or until I can get back on my feet. Summer livery is much cheaper of course and I should have been able to cut down on horses by then/won lottery/ married millionaire......

Please can everyone note, I am not intending to give him away, he will be loaned only so that all of those bad things are much less likely to happen. He is freeze marked loss of use and is microchipped also. He will be pts if I can't find a home, that is in no way an emotional blackmail idea but I owe him that much.

I wouldn't PTS just yet, as long as he is loaned and not gave away, OP can still visit and oversee his care. Sounds like OP cares for this Horse very much. I hope you find somewhere for him.

Another who would PTS..... look at the amount of missing on loan/sold posts we see

Is it just me, or do other people get fed up with how many people trot out the PTS line? The OP has stated that this horse will be loaned if she can find a good home, has a loss of use freezemark etc. There are genuine people wanting larger horses as companions. Small ponies are not always the best companions for TBs or WBs due to their different nutritional needs. What percentage of loan homes turn out to be nightmares? One in twenty? One in fifty? So you think death is better than a loan home? So long as the loaner is prepared to make the right checks and go visit etc, there is no reason why a horse cannot enjoy a good retirement as a companion.

We're just giving our opinion Wagtail, the OP is welcome to do as she wishes. Personally, I put my oldies to sleep in the autumn that they start struggling, we put down an old mare last month, and so that's what I advise other people to do.

Let's not turn this into a fight. I will put him to sleep if I have to. He is not struggling, he has been retired for 2 years now and will still kick up his heels in the field with the young stock on occasion.

I just went to see him on my way back from work (have slightly been avoiding him lately) and he was tucking into his hay and looking like he didn't have a care in the world.

Your opinion is welcome polotash, it is not an unexpected opinion but like some others, I hope he doesn't have to be.
