My most lovely dog, the best friend I have ever had is really really poorly. The vet has done all she can and we are at the last ditch - hoping that massive amounts of pain relief and anti-spasmodics will enable my sweet dog to restore his normal bladder function. He has had his bladder drained manually twice in 2 days and it isn't fair to do that more than one more time. If we can't stop the spasms that are blocking his urethra there really is no option but to let him go; he is currently very heavily sedated which I hope will help everything relax. He has no infection and no stones but terrible pain which we have addressed. I am sleeping downstairs with him and could do with any healing vibes that can be sent. I know what I may have to do to help my sweet boy but the thought of possibly having to say goodbye so soon is breaking my heart though I am trying to stay positive. Any vibes to help us through the night would be so welcome!!

Fingers crossed and healing vibes ….i so hope the sedation helps relax his bladder. Hope for the best is all we can focus on in times like this - turnarounds do happen. My own dog turned around many times when he was at what seemed like the 11th hour. I think us being with them and comforting them helps them so much.
I hope you manage to get some shut-eye too palo.

We are traveling a similar journey..I send you every good wish .It’s heartbreaking ,I hope your boy pulls through this.
As a last ditch thought would acupuncture be a consideration to try for this scenario ?

A really difficult night - poor dog so heavily sedated but I have managed to syringe some water into him as well as persuade him to eat his many medications with some tiny bits of cheese. He has had some yoghurt and a bit of lamb gravy for breakfast though in all honesty he is so sleepy I am not surprised he is not especially hungry. He has tried to have a wee and managed a tiny one thankfully. He looks more comfortable but we have a hard journey today; he must show some improvement before returning to the vet.

I am syringing water into him every hour but mindful that his bladder needs little and often. I feel utterly desperate but will do what I can in terms of comfort and basic nursing and hope that we make progress. I am not giving up yet. Poor little lad - he has never done a bad thing in his life; life is so unfair.

Is an emergency referral on to a university type small animal vet hospital an option?

No, sadly I don't think so because there is not much more that can actually be done; we need to resolve the serious spasm of the urethral tract. I don't know if my vet would be prepared to IV fluids and catheterise at the practice for a couple of days but if all the meds don't help then there isn't much capital in doing that tbh. I think if we see an improvement we may be able to drain my dog's bladder again to buy him more time but really that is it. It is a desperate, heartbreaking situation to be in but thank you for suggesting that.
