Hope your boys doing better this morning. Time may allow for an awful lot of healing and options so keeping comfortable relieving the pressure and pain medications isn't a bad call. I've seen dogs with severe urethral spasms for days suddenly resolve and go back to completely normal more then once(though the longterm management was still required- diet changes and neutering being the big ones) 2 out of 3 of those had unusual stones as the underlying cause....once the body had time to start to heal,pain was controlled and the diet changed to help stabilise urine pH your body does want to stabilise and fix these sort of issues. Finding the underlying cause always helps but you still have to let the body actually heal and stop reacting as well.
There are a lot of medical and surgical options out there as well, like rara above has posted for such a young dog it's almost always worth speaking to the specialists to see what they can offer as potential options.

Thank you. I am holding on for the moment and have asked for a second opinion tomorrow if I can keep him going. One of the issues is that my lad is not insured. I am heartbroken that this may, for the first time in my life, make all the difference to the outcome. I am going to ask my vet to consider scanning the kidneys for stones as I think she has only scanned his bladder so far. Today he has been possibly a tiny bit better - less pain but not much better wee output but then he is very heavily sedated. I am trying to keep going and hope that my vet may have found something else to consider today and that the 2nd opinion vet I am visiting tomorrow may also be able to think of something that I can afford to do. I don't know how long it is fair to keep going but my lad is definitely more comfortable today. It is just impossible to consider life without him but that may have to be what it is.

Been through a very similar situation with my boy, it's heartbreaking. No words other than I hope and pray he takes a turn for the better and pulls though

Thank you. He has managed to wag his tail and enjoying a few snippets of food. I 'think' that he is more comfortable, ever so slightly and has produced a slightly better wee but it is very marginal tbh. I am alternately telling myself to be positive and falling apart and weeping but I will keep going and keep trying for him.

Palo it’s not the end yet so keep fighting.
The colon is causing this issue..shocked and swollen it’s compromised the urethra..have they given prednisone,even short term.?
My schnauzer has a swollen ,irritated colon( tumor). But antibiotics and prednisone took away the swelling enough to relieve the pressure on her bladder..
My dog is in a completely different scenario and won’t get through this as she also has bladder cancer,but the pred did make her have a significantly better fortnight.


Its worth asking your vet if this could help..I took the dog off prednisone after ten days as in her case it made little difference to the growth of the tumors And increased her incontinence
She has had significant relief in using cannabis oil before she sleeps..it is also said to have ant inflammatory properties.
I honestly think your boy will come through this,don’t give up hope.It’s not the end yet.

My vet has consulted Cambridge University vet school with my dogs imaging and thankfully they have confirmed that there ARE stones so the plan now is to operate tomorrow to remove stones and castrate. University vet and mine are as confident as they can be that this will resolve things. We just have to support him till tomorrow morning and then hope all goes very smoothly. Thank you so much for this information - I did relay it to my vet to ask if we could look again for stones and she had already had the same idea and asked CUVH to look at the scans. I am feeling much better for having that clarification and a plan. Poor chap is very low but as long as we can get through till tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Thank you. I am more hopeful now and the breed society for Irish Terriers have been so helpful - really reaffirming that the vet needs to understand this particular situation. Thankfully all of that has been taken on board and I hope things will be more positive now.
