I’m so so sorry. It’s just the hardest thing.
Take time to grieve but never say never. You actually have a huge amount to offer the right dog. I saw one just this week that would suited down to the ground, yet will probably be a tough one to home.
Rossi was very beautiful, they give us so much that’s the loss is just unbearable. Xx

Has anyone got any experience of trained pet dogs advertised by some kennels?

You're best to contact a breed club or society, maybe visit a dog show/trial/training group and if you know anyone with contacts in those disciplines, make contacts that way.
If you have a breed or type in mind, someone here could point you in the right direction.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. They are such a huge part of our lives, it is literally like losing a family member. I agree with others that looking at an older rescue or rehome could work really well for your situation. But only when you are ready, and that’s different for everyone.
Lovely photos. He was very handsome ❤️

No, but the prices are bonkers, part trained gun dogs go for thousands. Were you thinking of a retriever?

My widowed father declined to get another dog after having his last one, a black Lab pts. He said that he would still take regular walks but the weather that autumn was extremely wet and he stopped walking. That meant that he didn't get to chat to the other dog walkers that he had been seeing for years. He still came to visit us and we went to his house and he went to visit his bil every week but that was the start of his decline. If at all possible I would advise taking on another dog so that you keep to your usual routines.

A friend of my dad lost his little westie but continued to go for walks. He said people treated him with suspicion when he went out without the dog. I must admit, I look for the dog when I see people in the woods.

I am near to wanting to murder my oh. He is so negative, it is too soon , it is too far, I don't want to drive. Not helped by the owners not getting back to me so don't know if tomorrow is possible or not!

Men!! they really can be so difficult sometimes. Is there anyone else who could drive you there? My OH was the same he tried to put his foot down and say thats it, no more dogs - 10 days later he was asking me had I found anything on the internet yet! When he actually agreed to come with me to see the first one he was more excited to get her home than me. He was the one who suggested we find another as the 'show girl' came from a home with several other show/breeding dogs so he felt (quite rightly) she would be missing another dogs company. Plus we have never kept just one dog anyway, purely because we feel the dogs are happier if they have a buddy at home.

I bet your OH will come around if you work on him, tell him you could miss this one that sounds perfect for you, and then spend forever trying to find something as good. Good luck I do hope you can persuade him.

Anyone fancy a drive from Essex to Warwick? Mind you they still haven't got back to me. Trouble is I can't drive a geared car since my accident and my little automatic wouldn't be up to the journey. I have set my heart on her so I know it's not going to happen.

I am so sorry for your loss. Also sorry I can't help as just tied up for the next couple of weeks with work and family - but there will be other dogs if this one doesn't work out. Our older lovely (perfect) girl came from the Cinnamon Trust. She was amazing and slotted in nicely straight away. She was shut down due to living with her elderly owner in a nursing home and restricted to one room and their garden for 2 years - but she came out of her shell very quickly and was marvellous for us. There are lovely older dogs with few issues out there - you don't have to get a puppy.

When we lose a dog I get a dog shaped hole that needs filling. Mr R did not want to fill the holes as he felt it was being unfaithful to the last dog.

I went 6 months without when we lost the first joint dog, never again and I now fill the hole with an ex racing greyound. Mr R has loved the three that we have had. I did get a GSD puppy a few years ago but she will be the last puppy as in our 60's it has been a lot harder than with previous puppies. It will be ex racers all the way from now on.

Good luch with todays meeting with the new girl.

My hairdresser back in Essex had two. Nice dogs. Expensive!
Where in the country are you? There’s usually a failed or older gun dog looking for a home somewhere.

I hope it works they are bringing her tomorrow for us to meet .bshe is three,is house trained, recall, heelwork, rides out with horses. She sounds perfect. She is expensive but I don't care I just need a new friend.
Only thing to think of, and please I’m not being unnecessarily negative, Is she a young lab? (I’m only assuming that as they are the breed I tend to see as ‘pet trained’.) You said you have an acre of land, will she get some walks as well? Unless you are very into training she will possibly be very active.

Im so sorry for your loss, they do indeed leave a big hole in our lives. As an interim step until you both decide whether you want to commit to another dog, are there any friends or neighbours who go out to work and may well love someone to have their dog for the day. I'm not sure whether insurance would be needed though. I guess it would depend how close a friend they are.

She looks lovely, and 3 is a good age. Why are they selling? Has she maybe had all the litters allowed? Can you get her pedigree name and look it up on KC website? I’d want to know what her hip and elbow scores actually are.
I’ve no problem with people selling dogs but it’s worth knowing the reasons.

Is she from the keeper type adverts? I see they have a couple of older labs for sale. Seems a shame to me that dogs who have fulfilled their breeding purpose are then sold on for a high price. You’d think if the bitch has produced two/three litters for the current owners then she’s very much “paid her way” and a loving family home would be more important than £££.

Imo she’s not worth that money. She’s an ex breeding bitch who they no longer have a use for.
it depends how desperate you are for a new dog, she might be worth it to you. I’m sure she’ll be a lovely girl.
