Lovely review of the UVEX Mips helmet

I've been looking at buying this helmet but cannot find out if it is competition legal for BD as it says it has VG1 and kitemarked but the BD rule book seems to suggest that this is not enough ? I already have the basic Uvex Exxential hat which I know isn't competition legal but find it really comfortable.

Uvex Exxential and Uvex MIPS are both BD legal.

As someone who hasn't ridden in 5yrs.... What is the safety issue with a fixed peak please?
If you fall face first and the peak is fixed, your head can get snapped back and you break your neck. It did used to happen, when harnesses were just attached to traditional old fashioned fixed peak hats . After a few deaths, the regulations were revisited.

Oh my god ? I never even considered that but I never had anything other than a fixed peak. Quite scary!! Thank you for explaining, I feel stupid and honestly horrified now?

Is this hat XC legal with the peak removed? And does it come in blue?! I'm considering swapping my skull for a more modern looking XC hat that would be worn without a silk. I like the one that Ingrid Klimke wears which is a Uvex but black...

It does come in Blue.

I am not so sure that the peak can be removed and replaced. I have messaged my UVEX rep here and inquired.

Just to say that the fixed peaks on hats which are approved to current safety standards are designed to snap off easily on impact - they are more ornamental than structural. I like a peak of some sort to keep the sun out of my eyes and the rain off my glasses.

Rules for XC are stricter, though, so no attached peak on the hat is allowed. In practice, the soft peak on a jockey skull cover works well enough to provide shade against sun/rain.

I'm keeping the Uvex Exxential for summer riding, especially if I go on all day trail rides. My other hats are non ventilated jockey skulls.

I find that my Uvex Perfexxion fits me so well. It's the best helmet I've had. I do own the MIPS Uvex, and it's sat in its box for nearly a year and will likely just "expire" before I use it ? terrible, I know, but I just haven't found a MIPS that I'm satisfied with yet. This one is the best fitting out of the others (MIPS) that I've tried. It's not quite as stylish/nice and a bit Mushroom head like, but if it works, I suppose those are minor details.

I give you full credit, OP, you are the best/most subtle viral marketer I've seen for a long time.

So many posts you have started on MIP helmets - do you own the company, do you work for them - or do they sponsor you?

Bunnydog is not a covert advertiser. MIPs technology has been adopted by various different manufacturers now. I've recently also bought a Specialized bike helmet with MIPs :).

Any advances in rider head protection should be welcomed. I'm a bit of a luddite and usually a late adopter of new trends, but I'm sufficiently impressed by MIPs to have bought two of them - a riding hat and a cycling hat.

Erm, I think she'd genuinely passionate about this cause/technology. Somewhat due to personal reasons (experiencing head trauma), but perhaps I'm being naive.

I'm entirely in agreement with people wearing the best protective equipment available - why take unnecessary risks in a risky sport? And my comment wasn't a criticism - just an observation.

I do think that a 'lovely review' of a person in a magazine (with no comparison to other hats, unlike say, Which? reviews) is advertising rather than a genuine review.

on these sort of hats that "fit" by adjusting the dial do you need to get them fitted by a saddler/hat fitter as you would others? or can you just buy online without fitting? On the redpost link you had to measure around your head for S M L etc. is this sufficient.

Asking because although I want a hat I don't want to get into close contact in a confined space with a fitter because of covid. There is a lot down here ATM.

I got my Uvex hat fitted in store at Edgemere. If I'd asked, I'm sure that they'd have done the fitting outdoors if I'd gone when it was dry. You could bring a decent sized mirror to check what the hat looks like on.

My head measures a full up 59cm, and the M-L (57-59cm) Uvex Exxential is a good fit on me. I'd expected to need the L-XL (59-61cm). My close fitting Gatehouse HS1 is a ginormous and unflattering size 3.

MIPS fit a bit differently. They wobble more on your head when you intentionally wobble it to test the fit. It is bit disconcerting. If you are used to using a wobble test as part of how well a hat fits.

I bought mine online, but I already knew I am 57-59cm in Uvex hats. The adjustable dial does give you more leeway to adjust.
