I give you full credit, OP, you are the best/most subtle viral marketer I've seen for a long time.

So many posts you have started on MIP helmets - do you own the company, do you work for them - or do they sponsor you?

@Shilasdair Hi there!!! Apologies as I am based in the USA or else I would make a point of finding you at a show, in your region if I were out and about and saying "Hi" in person.

To answer your question, no. I am not an owner of any company, let alone in any way connected to MIPS as a whole. The folks that make/own MIPS are in Sweden.

I cannot be sponsored by any company as a declared "Amateur" rider in the USA cannot be given items worth money as it's considered a form of compensation and would be a ticking over point to losing Amateur status and having to compete with professionals for a number of years, as a penalty.

Also I do not work for a firm with any connection to MIPS. Veterinary medicine is the field I am employed in, but nothing fancy... I am an administrative assistant.

All that said, I have been a long time member of the Chronicle of the Horse Forums here in the USA. One of my friends/fellow forum posters is an ACTUAL scientist who is himself a member of the ASTM (the testing body for USA helmets and MANY other things) A while ago, over a decade I believe, he gave us on the forum a heads up that there was a new technology out there that if it made it to riding helmets would be worth investing in. It was when MIPS was first starting in bicycling helmets. So, many of us who have had multiple concussions, paid attention. For his part he kept updating advances and when and if it was being considered for riding helmets. In 2016 (I think) he mentioned there was an equestrian helmet in the works. In 2018 when Back On Track/(Named "Trauma Void" here in the USA) launched their helmet, I bought some right away. And almost just as fast had to replace one from a fall but it was a defining fall. No concussion, no concussion symptoms even though I frankly REALLY got my bell rung. Fast forward to 2019, I had a freak accident when I was standing on my own two feet ringside and a horse in the ring, dropped it's rider, galloped loose jumped out of the ring on top of me and knocked me down and out while peeling back some of my skin from my eyebrow area. BUT I was wearing my MIPS helmet. I ended up with a much lesser concussion than the likely TBI or death that would have happened. And two different neurologists at the Rehab center having seen the video of my accident, my imaging from the hospital and such agreed the helmet for sure saved my life and the Mips did a hell of a job minimizing the damage to my brain. I had to do 12 weeks of occupational and physical therapy to recover from the damage that did occur. It wasn't a minor fall.

After I got home and when I could once again use computers with my dr's blessings, I decided to start talking about MIPS more. I created a FB group then and we're up to nearly 2k members now. I have talked to brand reps for all the companies that have MIPS helmets now. I have talked to reps for all the companies that don't have MIPS. Overall I view it as putting things more into the public eye and centralizing the information so everyone can come to the group, see all the stuff we have collected and make their own choices. They can speak to reps and other members about helmets, likes dislikes etc. We promote studies and share info on sales. All in all I am just trying to help everyone be able to come home after a bad fall.

So that's who I am, why I am doing this, and so on.

I am pretty easy to talk to. If you, or anyone else, have more questions feel free to DM here, FB or email. emily.daignault@gmail.com

All my best,

Emily

MIPS fit a bit differently. They wobble more on your head when you intentionally wobble it to test the fit. It is bit disconcerting. If you are used to using a wobble test as part of how well a hat fits.

I bought mine online, but I already knew I am 57-59cm in Uvex hats. The adjustable dial does give you more leeway to adjust.

Remember that the UVEX is the only MIPS helmet (Currently) that has a depth of helmet adjustment as well and the dial for the circumference. When I wore it for our demo video on ALL the current approved MIPS helmets, that depth adjustment made a HUGE difference how it sat on my head.

I've been looking at buying this helmet but cannot find out if it is competition legal for BD as it says it has VG1 and kitemarked but the BD rule book seems to suggest that this is not enough ? I already have the basic Uvex Exxential hat which I know isn't competition legal but find it really comfortable.

I asked BD, as the rules wording is misleading.

This is the reply - As (Uvex Exxential and Uvex Exxential MIPS) have the VG1 kitemark they will be competition legal.

It is the EN1384 -2017 standard that must be present in conjunction with another accepted standard, however we do appreciate the ambiguity regarding this and thank you for highlighting this rule, it will be reviewed and the clarity improved for the 2023 Rulebook.

Having had concussion as part of my XC fall 10 days ago, I will be hat shopping at Badminton. I can't ride for a few weeks anyway as bust my leg so no urgency in buying a new hat. I have a big head (6 7/8) so not sure how humoungous a Uvex will make my head look? Will be interesting to try on a lot of different makes (but not the stupidly expensive ones!)

I do like the idea of MIPs and guess there are other brands who also meet this standard not just Uvex?

Sorry to hear about your concussion! Charles Owen have MIPS hats as well.

Hi @Nicnac one point of clarity. It's not a standard. It's a system in the helmet that works to help reduce the instant force of a impact and how your brain/head takes the hit.

Here's a current guide of the helmets with MIPS available in the USA. Sadly the Tipperary models are not sold in the UK, so they're not an option. But there are MANY models out there from Champion, Charles Owen, One K, Uvex and Back on track.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aLIgpn21mSOVBNVtQTTWUJ8Be4gE5gc3/view?usp=sharing

More models are coming. More colors and fabrics are as well.

And also 6 7/8 is NOT a big head. We had someone looking for a 7 7/8 the other month. THAT is a big head.

My wife has a UVEX MIPS helmet and it doesn't have depth adjustment.

I can't watch the video as neither of us are on Facebook. Sad eh?

Got it.

**THIS IS NOT A MIPS HELMET in this video** BUT it does show how to adjust the depth adjustments. The Mips helmet has red arrows to mark where to pull the harness to adjust the depth.

On the MIPS helmet the attached pic shows you the red arrows to look for the pull the harness up or down to adjust the depth. (Right in helmet inline with the harness part that goes vertically up from in front of your ear.

I'm a 6 ⅞ and I fit in children's hats and my head isn't big?
.

You are absolutely right it's not big. Just rechecked my hat and it's 7 1/2 or Gatehouse 3.5

Bought a new hat yesterday - went back to HS1 as that's what fitted me best. Tried on so many. Still can't ride but Mr Nicnac offered to buy me a new one so was rude to refuse!

I ordered one from Horze on this recommendation, BunnyDog, so thank you. I swapped my wonderful Troxel Sierra, which really was the most comfortable thing I have ever worn on my head, for a Charles Owen Ayr 8, all properly fitted, but I just can't get on with it at all. It gives me the most awful headache if I wear it for more than 40 minutes, or so. Would've loved another troxel, but have tried the uvex because I think their adjustability is what made the troxel so comfortable. Fingers crossed it does the job. I'll let you know.
By the way, they were only £134 pounds and they had a £15 voucher for money off, too.

My apologies, my wife's helmet does have that adjustment feature. It was hidden under the helmet lining.

@Shilasdair Just to reiterate.... ALL of the most recent posts above are what make my heart so happy. Helping others to not only wear safer helmets but also to help share education about the helmets, their features etc.

I promise it's so gratifying to help 1 person at a time. It's why I keep mentioning MIPS. Since I started the group some amazing number like 100+ people who got MIPS helmets then had a fall WITHOUT serious head injuries.

If you expound the statistics on that and figure that it's happening in all countries and the people with MIPS available versus not, sure it's a small number. But it's a small number of people who didn't do serious injury to their brain.

I just think it's worth trying to push that number higher.

I just bought a hat, not a MIPS. Depends what you can afford and I cant afford almost £200 for a new hat just now personally. Shame they're so expensive.

It sounds like you're advertising for them - do you work for UVEX? Im sure you can find lovely reviews of pretty much any (non MIPS) helmet online ;)
