I am worried that people on the forum will put what I have written about retirement and believe I've done this to get rid of him. I don't want the forum's last memory of him to be what mine is but if anyone doubts me please PM me and I will send you the photos.

The measure of my love for him was that he is the only horse I have ever offered a retirement, but he was the one who couldn't have one.

Life sucks sometimes.

ETA also happy to provide the photos to anyone who thinks their horse is dealing with a soft tissue myopathy. I've seen what I think this as yet unnamed disease is in 2 other horses and neither made it past 8 years old.
.
I’m sure that no one on this forum would question your heartbreaking decision. So very sad for you. It is torture for us too to watch them suffer and you know that you did the right thing for him. That is what true love for a horse means. Sending love ❤️

I'm so very sorry to hear this, I know just how difficult a decision that is to make with any young horse, let alone one whom you adore.

So sorry to read this, it was clear from all your posts about him how much you thought of him and noone should be doubting your choice.
Ludo was lucky to have such a good owner who noticed when something wasnt right and who put his well being and quality of life first even though it was so painful for you.

Those who hurt are those who are left behind. Your selfless final act has kept him from a world of pain unfortunately leaving you behind to cope with yours.

The love you had for him literally shone back at you through his eyes and his whole cheeky character.

A true gentleman through and through, thank you Ludo and thank you C

Thinking of you xx

I’m so so sorry YCBM. It was so clear how much you loved him and I’m very sad for you that you had to see him deteriorate so quickly.

Hope your pusso’s are keeping a little warm feeling in your heart. Just so heartbreaking.

I am very sorry for your loss. To put our horses first, even when doing so causes us great pain, is kindest and most noble decision we can make as the owners of these beautiful animals. Please be kind to yourself. Your boy is at peace.

Poor Ludo for being born with a body that couldn't keep up with life, and poor you for having to make the final decision for a horse so young and so loved. I am sorry that you are having to go through this, it is especially painful when it's a horse who has taken over your heart. I hope that you are ok, and that the knowledge that you did the right thing for his welfare is of some comfort.

I am so sorry it has come to this. It seems so many forum members have lost special horses in the last 12 months. I emphasise with how you feel. It is particularly tough when you loose a horse to a condition that is not related to old age.

There is a massive element of luck with horse keeping and you were unlucky it is not just about having the perfect home set which most people don't have. As you said he was well cared for on livery and looked healthy.

When I lost Homey my vet said I should be proud of myself as I did everything I could to try and save Homey. You did everything you could for Ludo too just sometimes there is nothing more that can be done to ensure that they can live a contented life free from pain.

I like you am wanting to not be so deeply bonded with whatever new pony I get as I was with Homey but I am not sure functional horse ownership will work for me unless I buy something I am not that keen on but will do the job. I do know that new pony will not guarantee that I will be happy again after loosing Homey.

I will, I think, never stop feeling guilty that I had to take him away from a perfect management system and put him in livery stables for his last year. He was well looked after and looked well, but it didn't compare with ten acres and a "stable" big enough to canter around in with his friends.

He was the loveliest creature and everyone, even the vet, said how lovely he was. I can't regret knowing him, but I'm never going to let myself love another horse like I loved him, it's just too painful to lose them.

I am so sorry ycbm.
I'm sat here crying over a horse I never met, belonging to someone I only know of online. I can only imagine your heartbreak. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing Ludo touched many people's lives through this forum, as I'm sure he did in real life. And thank you for showing us all how to listen to your horse and put him first, no matter what. It is an example I will try to follow.
RIP Ludo.

I'm so sorry, I hope you can get some peace in knowing you did what was best for him even though it was hard for you. Anyone who criticizes your decision should be ashamed of themselves.

Sleep tight Ludo xx
