The measure of my love for him was that he is the only horse I have ever offered a retirement, but he was the one who couldn't have one.

I think all our hearts are breaking for you today. Over the last decade or so since I returned to the horse world I have learnt so much from your posts that I just know that Ludo could not have had a better home. Having had to pts two in fairly quick succession (one an ex-racer) I did begin to despair of my ownership skills until a much wiser and experienced friend said that, sometimes, they come to us for a reason - even if that reason is for us to just try to take care of their problems and let them go peacefully.

Be comforted that you could not have done more for him in any way - be comforted that so many on here respect your judgement and your decision.

Above all - keep your heart open for the next one who needs you. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is an ex-racer and I can live vicariously through your adventures!!!

You did the right thing, and he would thank you for it if he could. With muscle myopathy in the mix, once they’re out of full work you’re out of choices in my experience.

Give yourself time. After my TB retired I did not connect with another horse for years (I did ride though) until a cheeky NF pony needed me to school her. I sat on this completely unsuitable (and rather small) mare and there was the connection again.

I’m so sorry you lost your treasured boy. I also lost my only horse who was my horse of a lifetime 3 weeks ago to a colic. I did have to make the decision whether or not he could’ve been referred to a larger equine vet hospital to see if surgery was an option, but faced with how poorly he was and knowing the other procedures he has endured throughout his 13 years with me, I chose to let him go at his home and not put him through anymore. Everyone tells me it was the right decision but I still second guess it. I can’t imagine ever loving another like I loved Stanley and the sense of loss is dreadful. Take care of yourself at this sad time.
