Manuka honey anyone used?

Ellie`s got a wound from her kick the other week and it not healing to well the vet has advised me to use manuka honey. I asked her if l could get it in the health store but she said she would order me one as it has to be sterile if it is going on an open wound.
So has anyone used it and with what success.

get it from a spermarket! vets will triple the price at least! get as higher rating as you can afford-the higher the rating the more expensive it is.

yes it did a good job but i paid £10 for 500ml and i didnt even make a dent in it i know a place by where i live sells it but its like a sweet shop :s but it is easier to get it from the vet then hunt it down and you can get medical standard honey from the pharmacy but its £5 for 25ml so better to get manuka honey instead

Haven't used it personally on a horse, but we use it at work (nursing home) on residents with sores and it's amazing in aiding the healing process

My vet asked me to use it v recently on an open wound on the yard cat. However, as the wound had no way of applying a bandage, in the v hot weather, within 12 hours, poor cat had a lovely collection of maggots. No doubt flies attracted by the honey. The maggots did clean the wound very nicely, but due to the dangers of them starting on healthy flesh, we then were advised to hibiscrub the wound (ouch,poor cat). I have since been told this time of year,is advisable to only use the honey on a wound you can cover. Just check the wound very frequently if you do use and weather hot.

Ive used it and would recommend it, i got mine from tescos, it was a 15+ rating and cost £11ish just smear it on, and if it can be bandaged do that and leave it on for a few days before reaplying.

I'm currently using it on a kick wound. The flies are not attracted to the honey. The only trouble I have is that because it is hot and the area I'm treating is also very warm it melts very quickly and runs down the leg so I have to reapply very regularly. Its the best stuff for wounds in my experience.

I've used it got mine from Sainsburys 25+ love love love the stuff really worked a treat on my youngsters cut thought he or his mum might try to lick it off but they actually seem quite disgusted by it...again flies didnt seem to like it and gives quite a nice gel like covering!! defo something I have in my first aid kit!!

It is amazing stuff but be careful of wasps when it is that time of year!

The vets are really cunning or taken in by the sales pitch - there is no such thing as medical grade - it's all the same.

You will be fine using 'Active Manuka Honey' from the health food shop.

It is brillent stuff and along with salt for washing a wound and Animalintex is the only other treatment in my First Aid box.

Fantastic results on the very nasty kick to the inside of my mare's hock. I used manuka at night when she was stabled, aloe vera during the day when she was in a small paddock. Use 10+ and buy it at the supermarket -the sterile bit is rubbish and just sales-talk. I think Aldi are selling it now,so worth a look there.

Our mare jumped the fenced and got caught in the wire and made a real mess of her leg, bought ours from Tesco, work brilliantly, however as above it badically melts in the hot summer weather, and then in winter if you leave it in the tack room it freezes and crystalises!!!
