they can be excited and with it at the same time i find the excitment gives me a better ride if your going round a course and its mondane and boring i cant frankly be bothered.
I like them back on the hocks springing really giving them some air nice and nippy in the jump off just like to put my leg on and go not boot it all the way round.

Only read a bit of this but I agree with SC, I like a horse to be focused on the job in hand - if its stupidly over excited or nervous, then its not going to be concentrating and therefore mistakes will be made.

Look at King William - jumped like a pro at home, get to a competition, tense, not concentrating = poles flying everywhere.

ah but i said excited not over ecxited its a fine line but it is there its like jacob he does get very excited at comps but always comes in the ribbons and has won championships.
 
But thats a well trained horse who enjoys its job. Its not necessary to have a horse thats extremely excited.
 
well why shouldnt i be i have ridden some fabby horses and i got a bloody good seat been riding since the age of 3 and i have had no more than 6 falls.

and before people start saying the old wifes tale the more you fall off the more you have done and the better rider you are dont because its rubbish.
 
I think that inheriting a horse which is a rearer & improving it is one thing & you sound like you are doing well with a horse which in other hands might have had a very uncertain future.
This is not aimed at you or really at anyone on here BUTI get fed up with the continual excuses about horses which rear/buck or are strong. I'm very old-fashioned and will always err on the side of there not being bad horses, just bad riders, or putting it another way, it's never the horses fault always the riders. I know both statements are fatuous, but think people should still be brought up to think that.
I know people with horses which ALL rear and tank off. Yet all of their horses are bad/born like it/came like it. They will tell you this even when you have known horse and rider for years and know it to be patently untrue. It exasperates me and I feel upset for the horses.
 
tbh i feel alot safer going in a straight line on a big brute of an animal with no balance as apposed to trying to stear it round a school lol.

The best horses i have had are normally very excited in the warm-up/startnox but then settle. When i was at a big dressage show all the germans horses were worked for ages to get them to settle, at the begining the horses were out of their minds, but then once they had settled they were outstanding.

On marathons Pip gets very excited and has squeling fits, but when it comes to the obticals he pays full attention, hence he does well, but i can see if you horse is soo excited it cant concenrate on the job in competition it pretty no good, unoless you dont want to compete.

Hence i said most horses will buck or rear, not all.
 
but then to me that sounds old school and very bhs lady way of thinking all very rule of thumb and factual and i would of hated to be around when all that was going on i feel riding has come a long way as a sport in recent years and that old fuddy duddy was of thinking should be thrown out.

Personaly i think P_G is a bloody brilliant rider, if a horse has it in its head it is going to rear, you cant stop it, its stronger than you!

I have had way more falls than that. Therefore I must be rubbish, and the poeple who I went through PC with who have ridden for GB young Riders 3DE must be pants too - I know they hav fallen off loads too.

No not BHS way at all, how is it fuddy duddy to put the horse first. If I am riding and something goes wrong I wonder what I am doing wrong and how to fix it - I am sooooo not a BHS type person, but I do think you are dissing them unnecessarily, they have actually done some good you know

Thanx! I wouldnt go that far!!

But i agree with what you are saying - if Archie wants to slam in a rear he will, il hit him tho to send him forwards and he generally throws in some bucks after that.

To say that bad riders cause rearers is total crap, sorry.

as somebody who went to a college that does everything the bhs way real life is just not like that you get some very bhs old school people its annoying alot of the bhs stuff is outdated and frankly rubbish but yes its done alot of good and some of it is still very relevant.
 
I think you are a very good rider. I think there are plenty horses which rear esp with the advent of so many warmbloods BUT I think there are too many riders (not anyone in this thread - as I only know a few people on here) who will not admit they might be at fault and generally blame the horse.

That is the most bonkers thing I have ever heard! I love the fact that my horse is sane and sensible enough that he is easy to ride and work in at a comp. He adores eventing, but he is not an idiot, so that's one less thing for me to battle with.

I love the fact that Be is so calm at competitions. It makes it so much more enjoyable for me than with the old boy who'd get over excited
