I'm so very sorry for your loss. We lost our beautiful Cockapoo in very similar circumstances at the end of July. Within the space of a few days he went from us wondering if something was not quite right to deteriorating rapidly. When we took him we had to decide to let him go there and then. He was eight too and the vet also suspected cancer.

It's such a difficult thing to try and get your head around, especially when you look at photos or think of things they were doing only very shortly beforehand and they seemed so fit and well. I won't deny that I'm still struggling with this now and I get tearful at some point most days. And I do feel cheated with him not being very old, as I'm sure you will too.

I hope you manage to get some sleep in the coming days and try not to feel bad for not being there with him, although I know that's easier said than done.

The Blue Cross have a support group on Facebook which I have found helpful but if you want to talk then do feel free to message me.

I'm so sorry, what a lovely boy and a great last day he had. Hopefully you can take some comfort in that I doubt he was suffering much at all and he had a quick, peaceful ending.

I’m really sorry about Boots, so young and a lovely looking boy.

We lost a 5 year old Cocker a few months ago to a sudden onset leukaemia type disease which Spaniels are susceptible to. I can’t remember the name but there’s no warning, Bentley limped, went off his food and when he went to the vet 2 days later his abdomen was a mass of internal bleeding. He was PTS that evening as there was no way to reverse the damage.

That sounds pretty much like what happened to Boots. Even in the space of a few hours he got much much worse.

He did have a good last day. He got bacon for breakfast to tempt him to eat and he went on a lovely walk and posed for loads of photos. Even had a little paddle in the stream

What a beautiful photo, I am so sorry

If you are local to West Sussex, I have a friend at the yard that needs to rehome their springer (I only mention this as you have said you will need another dog, I hope it doesn't seem insensitive). Male, super submissive, just not got enough drive to be a gun dog which is what they have

Its not insensitive at all, unfortunately I am in Northumberland so about as far from West Sussex you can get. But he sounds ideal otherwise

Im so so sorry you lost sweet Boots so suddenly. It’s an awful shock when they go so quickly and unexpected, big hugs for you.

Like others, i also lost my dog extremely quickly. It was algae from stagnant water, complete organ failure very rapidly took over. We almost saved her for 12hrs, then the downturn came. It’s a lot to process and fathom when its so quick. The only saving grace i cling to is that the extreme illness episode was very quick and there was very minimal suffering.
She was a breed that could have spent old age with arthritic issues, so despite the wrenching grief, i have to remember she had all her days being very healthy and very happy, and that’s a great life for a dog, even if short.

Love and hugs xx

His last walk, I had no idea how poorly he was, but because he was slower because he wasn’t well he gifted us with some wonderful pictures. He wagged his tail throughout. I hope he enjoyed spending most of his last day in the woods and the river rather than in a vet hospital

So sorry , what an awful shock for you , the only saving grace is he didn’t suffer for long although it’s worse for you as you weren’t prepared like you would be if he was old… look after yourself

I'm so sorry for your loss.
That's such a shock to go through, but please try to not blame yourself @Abi90 for anything of what happened. I know it's not easy, but sometimes we just have to accept that we took the decision which we then and there thought was the best decision for them, even though in hindsight we wish we would've done something different. Don't focus so much on that you weren't there when he died, that you forget that you where trying to give him a chance to survive. You had no way of knowing that it would end that quickly.

Sometimes it's difficult to believe what health problems they've been able to stiff upper lip their way through, but I still don't believe that means that they can fake genuine enjoyment. So when he was running around enjoying himself on the beach just like his ordinary self on Friday, he truly was enjoying himself. I hope that thought gives you some comfort.

I also hope that you soon find a suitable new dog to keep your remaining dog company. You will still grieve your handsome boy, but at least then without the added extra burden of having to see your other dog struggle with being an only dog.

Thank you so much everyone.

I am still struggling today but I think that’s fairly normal.

I’ve contacted a pet bereavement counsellor as someone suggested above, thank you.

I’m also going to go to the doctor as I know I have a tendency for low moods when enduring heartbreak and because the manner of his death was so horrific.

I asked to get his pawprints done so also think I will get his pawprint translated into a tattoo (I have several tattoos already its not a wild decision) so he can be with me always.
