Neurotic dog - creeping me out!

So agreed to dog sit for my parents for the evening. They live in a lovely cottage in the middle of a quiet village and their house has a cellar by the kitchen which they use to store booze. Now for the creepy bit, one of their dogs periodically (every hour or so) gets distressed and insists that you have to go and open the cellar as he's certain there's something (or someone!) in it. When I then show him that there's no one there and go down the steps he goes even more neurotic like he's convinced something (or someone 😳) is going to get me. He will only put his front paws on the first step and definitely no further. This is apparently a regular thing that he does. Being here alone overnight it really started to creep me out (and I don't scare easily!)
Anyone else have neurotic ghost hunting dogs?

Not sure if 'ghost hunting' but had odd experience with Mrs Spaniel over xmas...

Christmas eve, i'd gone to watch tv in bed. Turned tv off, snuggled into duvet and made myself cosy. Then I heard a man's voice clear as day say 'i'm sorry.'

At first I thought it was my brother (we share a house) and he'd knocked and entered mistakenly so I said 'what for?'
But there was no one in my room.
Got up and went to the hall outside where she sleeps. She's sitting bolt upright staring at the wall growling which is most unlike her. Didn't even respond or wag her tail when i called her.
Walked past and checked out the spare room and downstairs and then she snapped out of it - was a bit spooked by then so she slept on my bed that night!!!!

Happened a few times over xmas. Never the voice but i'd hear her growling or barking at the wall...

Its stopped now thank goodness!

News Year day about 8pm, I hear a banging noise outside. I am in the middle of nowhere-there's no need for there to be any banging but I don't spook easy. the dog goes absolutely ballistic though-hackles, woowoowoowoo, snarling-sounds terrifying but he was trying to get on my lap. I start getting scared-text OH who tells me to ring police (he's a drama llama). I turn all the lights off, turn on outside lights. bloody badger!

karrna-that is quite spooky! and OP-check for badgers ;)

I read this in bed and then couldn't sleep. I'm sure my house is haunted and my dog keeps barking at nothing!

My dog once fixated on and went crazy growling and barking at something only he could see on the stairs in our old house, hackles up and everything, he refused to go and investigate himself and would only go up once I went up to show him it was ok (this is a dog I got to make me feel safe! Go figure ha) it never happened before or since but it freaked me right out!

Years ago I went for dinner at friends they lived in a old house that well known by people in the area for odd happenings .
The couple had a rottie and she was an odd dog it was a merry evening I was driving so sober late on the dog came into the dining room from the kitchen and I noticed her looking in the corner I looked round the room no one else had noticed so I turned round and looked in the corner there's was a faint coloumn of grey smoke ? twirling in the corner of the room the dog had her hackles up and ran to the wife who told her off and ran ordered her in the kitchen .
Later I went to the loo and the dog came to me she was sad it was like she was saying you saw it didn't you .
I was glad to get home .
They moved soon after I was happy for the dog .
Years later I was talking to my builder he had worked in the house and we got onto the subject he told me there had been a stairway where I saw the column he also said the room above was freezing and had a horrible feel to it .

I am not really a believer in ghosts and ghouls, but this made me laugh (sorry to those who may be of a more sensitive nature! :D)
