I was just reviewing my renewal docs as Ronnie's insurance is up for renewal on 2 April. The following general exclusion has been applied:

"We will not pay any claim which directly or indirectly arises from, or is connected with:
- any accident that happened to an animal insured before the start of the policy, or if this has been in force for a year or more, before the last renewal.

- any illness, disease or condition which first appeared in an an animal insured before the start of the policy, or if this has been in force for a year or more, before the last renewal. "

This sounds to me like heaven help you if your horse gets injured just before your insurance is renewed? Ronnie's left foreleg lameness was picked up on 19 March, does this mean he has to have all diagnosis and treatment complete prior to 2 April or it will be excluded?

Please someone tell me I'm wrong...

That is pretty standard wording on most policies.
Just call them up and tell them you ae making a claim and you will have 12 months from the date of the injury for treatment

I called them RE this as I'm in same situation, if you check your old policy you have a year to claim from date of incident even if you don't renew so you're fine, it's just a re-wording of the old exclusion of existing problems

Yep - I have this exclusion on Rage (it arose after claiming for the KS diagnosis and surgery), but he was insured on the same policy as Boo, so they slapped the exclusion across her as well, even though she had not claimed at that point

Since having that exclusion they have paid out for numerous long standing issues (including subsequent resulting loss of animal payment), so it seems not to make a difference.

I felt very sick when I first read it though!

Oh phew, I've been panicking big time. I wasn't sure what this meant. With him going back on Monday I was thinking I have got 2 days to get it in. Will reply to your PM later

Its their new way of not having to list everything that is excluded on your individual horse...

ie.... merlin would be excluded from hock spavins and right hind fetlock excluded....

It saves them the hassle of having to list stuff and also gets them out of having to pay for anything that has been grumbling on for over 12 months..... even if you have not put a claim in!!!

But you do have a year from the date of the claim to get your stuff paid for...... but only if the vet hasnt seen it and written it in your notes, then you only have a year!!!

The main reason that I keep quiet about the scabby area between merlins front legs.... It may be a flat sarcoid.... it may be a scabby scurfy thing..... but it does not exist unless I want to claim for treatment!!

Ive got it too, I rang up and asked about it and they said 95% of policies have it and not to worry about it. I was worried as my horse fractured his leg a couple of years ago and I read it to mean that if he injured or got a condition in that leg then I wouldnt be covered but they said it would only be if it was as a result from the fracture. I think its confusing and was better before when they listed exclusions.
