What do you have going on?

No major plans with all of the Covid measures in place here. So a chilled evening NYE.

As for the horse, he's coming back into work after a bit of a break due to cellulitis. I think/hope I got lucky and it's gone. He feels good. Likely a hack tomorrow, a school Saturday, and a "hike" with OH and the dog on Sunday.

Happy New Year everyone!

As they say here (loose translation) have a good slide into the New Year ?

whooo hoooo! more nursing!! it's all just so enjoyable right now.

It's my birthday on Saturday, so i think the weekend will be mainly filled with existential dread.

Existential dread ? sorry, it's not funny, I know, but I will relate to this in a few months ;)

Basically after about age 25, I lost interest in birthdays.

yep. OH is like "well we got married on my 40th, we have to do something special for yours..."
nope. let's just carry on as normal, ta. I'm actually grateful that Omicron has scuppered any silly ideas about gatherings :D

I’m planning on cheering myself up by buying a towing vehicle. A bit of retail therapy. The new car was going to be called Dolly as she’s funding it. But Katie didn’t find that very funny so maybe not.

Just trying to persuade OH that the uni fund can wait a bit longer before being replenished…. He’s got to the stage of sort of saying ‘maybe I just need to pretend Dolly wasn’t sold and ignore that money’.

Yep that’s the spirit. :p:p

I wasn't planning much but am now apparently boxing over to adjacent commons tomorrow as hacking chum has new box and wants company out there.
There has been muttering about a sj lesson on Sunday but I'll peer at weather forecast 1st,was planning on letting B have a very quiet January especially if weather rubbish!
Good luck to anyone competing x

We had a lesson today and it was so good. He was an absolute sass pot - warmed up beautifully but as soon as we started jumping, he resembled a bsja pony leaping around. But he settled by the end. Very happy with how I rode him. Trainer thinks the same as others have said about him stopping after jumps off a turn that he falls onto his forehand round the corner and I don’t support him enough so he gets to the fence and physically can’t jump it. Lots to work on but hopefully we will be back out in no time.

On Monday we have a very exciting clinic with Piggy March! Can’t wait - hopefully he doesn’t show me up too much

No plans for NYE staying in on my own and enjoying time off work.

Pony on active box rest due to tendonitis up to 35 minutes walking under saddle plus two in hand/horse walker sessions a day. It has been a nearly 6 months since his injury. It is slow going but hopefully he will make a full recovery.

Hand walking and a baited stretches, that's what I'll be doing . I am at the start of rehabilitation for KS, SI and PSD so feeling a down and deflated. After such a great start and high hopes. If you want to see what going on you can pop over to my blog but I haven't really had the time to say too much. At this point I don't even know when I will ever sit on her again. I feel sad when I see everyone else who have got their ex-racers around the time I got Stormy or afterwards and are out enjoying themselves and here I am with nothing to really show or look forward to. I've had her a year now.....
I am going to try to cheer myself up and go and help a friend with her horses and maybe ride one of those but as bad as it sounds I am struggling to want to get on anything. I got on one for the first time in 3 months at the beginning of the week to test my shoulder as I hadn't ridden since my operation. My shoulder was fine but my legs are so weak. I hadn't even accounted for how quickly I have lost all my muscle strength. And it's hard to get motivated to go and do more gym work when I am already having to do so much just look after Stormy at the moment and work which since Brexit has turned into a nightmare. Sorry for the depressing post. I feel like I should at least try to talk about it as all I do is cry at the moment.

Foinavon was a star today. Went on a fast group hack, and while the horses at the front egged each other into re-enacting the Kentucky Derby, he loped along at the back, quite content, not strong or nutty at all.

I can see why people turn weanling-age foals away. Caso is okay, but he does require a lot of work and a lot of thought to handle. So does his owner! When I'm at the barn, I have to manage Caso, Hermosa, and Caso's owner, and Hermosa is the easiest one of the bloody lot. I would love nothing more than to turn those horses away and not even try to train (now that they both have passed Basic Handling 101) until we geld Caso on the Jan 24th, then wean a week or two later, but his owner likes to Do. Things. with the horses, and probably thinks I'm lazy because I really can't be bothered. Aligning her schedule, my schedule, and the winter turn-out schedules of assorted horses sucks.

That all said, if I am not too hanging on New Year's Day, we will take them for one of our in-hand wanders. They like it, and they are both well mannered enough so I don't have to think too hard, so I like it.

@CanteringCarrot, is this a German thing? Back in the US, people did more training and things with weanlings/yearlings than they do here. Is Germany similar?

And just to make it all a little harder, Foinavon changes from full to DIY livery on the 1st. It saves money, and at some point in the future, Hermosa will move to that yard. Both need to be DIY for it to be affordable.

Lots of hacking, I think!

I've almost been persuaded to take part in a dressage in January so probably should at least check we can reasonably canter a 20 metre circle and remember how to do stuff at markers. I suspect we'll actually be out in the countryside, cantering in straight lines in through lots of puddles :D

Lots of moral support to those nursing & re-habbing. Its the pits at this time of year :(

In my experience, no. In this area they're taught basic handling, as in wear a halter and be able to lead (roughly), and they're turned away on a field May to Nov, then often put into a smaller area/field with an open stable in the winter. Pretty minimal interaction. Then around 3 or 4 they're backed. It's all really...basic. Seemed that way at some of the Studs in the North too. Generally feral unless being prepped for a sale.

There are 4 at our yard ages 1 to 3 in a herd together and they're just hanging out. The owners pop in to visit with them every now and again. Same for the ones at the surrounding yards, generally hanging out in young horse herds until backed.

So it's just my friend then! I would have really struggled these last seven months without her, and both the horses very much needed the work we put in on our Basic Handling 101 course. Especially Hermosa, who's quite a civilized creature now. But it's hard work convincing her that we can do nothing at this moment, and that's okay. It's not just me being scatty/disorganized/too focused on my other horse (even if it is a little bit of that).

The set-up isn't bad where they are, as far as youngstock goes. They are in a big corral with their herd overnight. Every other day, they all go out into a big field (the yard's other herd gets the field on days when my horses' herd isn't on it). The YO catches Hermosa and leads her along with Caso's two favourite aunties, and they let Caso just follow those mares into the corral.

I did say to his owner that I would not be even trying to do things with them on their field days

Sorry to read this- they’re each individually hard things to rehab from so to have it all at once is just **** ?

Well I bought a car so now it's time to plan adventures!

@Caol Ila I am loving being on an active hacking yard. Who'd have thought it. An unexpected advantage of full livery is all the riders have lots of spare time and are all very active. All but 2 horses went out on a Christmas hack - Amber and one other chap stayed behind. The rest of the yard were out.

That's rotten. ☹ Completely understand that lack of motivation. Hope 2022 is a better year for you.

Well I loathe NYE so I'll be going to bed at 11pm, pulling the duvet over my head to block out any fireworks, and waiting for the start of a brand new shiny year!

Unlikely to be doing anything remotely horsey as we STILL have gales here. ? Gusting up to 50mph today. Absolutely sick of it.

Sunday looks very slightly better so fingers crossed we can do something fun.

Could be worse, this time last year we were at the beginning of a month under snow!
