Something terrible happened when we got back to the yard after the dressage, I was busy un-tacking Py, giving him a sponge off and taking the plaits out etc and he accidently stood on a chicken

We have chickens on our livery yard, a field full of free range layers, but you always get the odd half a dozen that get out and potter around the farm yard, they have got that used to people that as soon as you bring your horse in, there around you, I usually chooo them away, I tell them ''your gonna get stook on one of these days buggar off''

I heard this squawk (nothing unusual as there always squawking and clucking etc) and was brushing off his legs and noticed to my horror that he was actually fully stood on one with his back leg, not just a its foot or wing, the whole god dam chicken!

I was horrified and froze and couldn't believe my eyes!, of course big dumb Py....and he is known for being a big dumb buggar

, just stood there like nothing had happened, god knows how long he'd been stood on it, well I pushed him over and by some miracle it sprung back up pottered off!

I panicked and wondered what on earth to do, because surely it must of crushed its rib cage and broken its bones, his foot was flat to the floor when he was stood on it, if the YO was in I'd of run to get him so he could well, shoot it to prevent it suffering but nobody was there and it made off to the rest of the them and well they all look the same so I couldn't then tell which one it was.

I feel terrible, I can't get the image out of my head, poor little chicken, what would you of done?

How horrible for you Kenzo but it was an accident so don't beat yourself up! If you can't tell which one it was then there really is nothing you can do. So long as you have informed YO so that they can keep an eye out for a chicken showing signs of injury, there really is nothing else to do - honestly! Don't worry - will cross fingers that poor chook is okay though!

My horse stod on a cockerel's leg once & broke it. We splinted the cockerel's leg & he recovered. I still have him (the chicken) & that was around 5 years ago. The vet said that their bones mend really quickly.

I'm sure it will have survived if it managed to run away!

same thing happened with me only with my cat!!! miraculously the cat was unharmed and the cats leg had been trapped under the horses foot and was scraping the horses leg but when finally got horse to lift leg the cat ran away! but was checked over and is still living happily today lol

dont worry too much as long as YO knows to look out for it thats all u can do!

Are you sure it was alive when it ran off? My dog had one once, and it ran off when he dropped it, so I went to get OH just incase it needed dispatching, and it was actually dead, just the nerves still working!

One of our hens once ran straight into the path of Millie's back legs when I was leading her to the field, it got stood on and completely rolled over but it lived to tell the tale.......until the fox got it that is

I wouldn't worry to much, just let the yard owner know just incase it does die, at least he will then know why.

as above, mention it to the YO. chickens aren't the brightest, i doubt s/he'll be surprised... one of mine got trodden on by a visiting horse last year, i thought it was sunbathing (!!) but it was dead, oops. Katy trod on 1 last summer but luckily only broke its leg, which i splinted carefully and successfully, it's still going strong...
ask YO to check them, see if 1 is limping or dead!

the chicken my first horse squashed wasn't so lucky.
this particular chicken had a habit of getting onto the partitioning wall between stables and jumping on to the back of the next door horse, where it was quite happy to sit all day. unfortunately one day it got the wrong stable, jumped onto my mares back. she was not impressed and promptly bucked and double barrelled it flat against the stable wall.
i was not popular after that as it was the YO wifes favorite.
RIP Freckles

Thanks guys, well I at least I'm not the only one its happened to then, I've not heard back from the YO yet, but everyone else I've told at work (at the office) thinks if funny

...well within reason, maybe it was my impressions of what happend I'm just going to be forever worried that it will happen again now.

My mare killed a chicken deliberately when she had the foal with her. The chuck was on the partition as usual I turned my back next minute she had it with those big alien queen teeth of hers. It was the best layer as well.

Seriously, don't worry about it!
I know it's horrible, it's happened to me too, in the same situation, (almost, it was a shetland who purposly stomped several times on this one chicken) but, it was a young chicken, and was quite small, i took it home with me, just in case..
+ this was about a year ago now, and the chicken is as good as ever,
