Took your criteria as a very loose guideline and not a rule - be grateful I managed to stop myself from going through Standie ads! - but here are some potential candidates. Excuse the couple ugly looking ones, I felt sorry for them. Personal favourite non-ugly one is Queen's Sargent.

May be worth contacting Stella Barclay - based between Preston & Garstang. Not sure if she has anything currently but generally quite nice natured horses that hack etc and not too far away from you.

I have a friend selling a nice looking grey gelding but they're in Carmarthenshire which is definitely more than 2 hours away...

Fred and Rowena Cook are a little further away (closer to 3 hours than 2) but they get lovely horses and have a fantastic reputation.

I dont know them personally, but I have a couple of clients who have had horses from them and they have been gorgeous horses, and the rehoming experience was overwhelmingly positive according to my clients.

I have a friend I could put you in touch with - not sure what he is getting in, but he has ex-racers regularly and is decent and honest.

eta: just seen the distance stipulation - he's in Surrey. Sorry.
Happy to second this recommendation :)

Another suggestion is Mick and David Easterby and Philip Kirby, though my apologies I’m unsure of their locations

You’ve chosen the right time of year. I’d pop an email round local trainers.
Lots of horses will be turned away now/soon for summer and the ones not making the grade will be after new homes.
Lots of horses at the yards I worked at found their new owners this way.

Have a look at Solway Racehorses, they seem to have a good reputation from what I've heard but I'm a bit out of the loop for the last couple of years. Just a little over 2hrs I think.

Best of luck.
There’s a quasi dealers in Yorkshire. I’m not sure if you do fb but it may be you can see it without logging in. If not let me know.

I had a look. The first video isn't a great advert. The horse seems lame on the corner in the first few frames and pretty unhappy in its work.

I have a friend with a new beginnings horse, lovely bunch of people, I'd have a Phil Kirby ROR in a heartbeat as they have good starts, Mick Easterby often has nice sorts for sale out of training (N Yorks), Rebecca Menzies always seem to do well out of racing too.

I'm happy to do the retraining myself. I'd quite like to buy one that was sound enough to have raced last week. Also happy with a soft tissue injury that's ready to start work again, as long as the injury was caused by racing or race training which I'm unlikely to repeat.
