We went out for a few hours trek in Iceland last year. When the lass asked us what riding experience we had my OH immediately piped up with "I used to ride racehorses and she still does" 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I could have strangled him! The lasses eyes lit up and I just knew we were going to get the ones that didn't get out often as no one could ride them. I wanted to enjoy my ride!

Well I got one that was very cold backed. Joy of joys! And Steve got what looked to be a lovely wee ride. So we set off - after me walking said Icelandic round for a few mins, doing up the girth, walking round, doing up the girth, walking round, doing up the girth then getting on, sitting quietly then quietly walking round. Every time we stopped his back would hit the roof. Steve's look an utter joy! Then we turned for home. 😂😂😂 my lad just kept a nice hold on my rein (less than I would like of a racehorse but enough to know he was there and listening) and Steve's tried to bomb off all the way home! Not helped by the guides horse being completely and utterly unsuitable for the job. It just wanted to flat out tolt everywhere, she was really struggling with it. I did consider offering to swop with her but then I thought " sod it I'm on holiday paying to be here I'm going to enjoy my wee friend". Steve got his arms pulled out of his sockets every inch of the hour and a half home 😂😂😂 serves him right!

I did a week long ride. I had a variety of horses tolty, pacey and one with a gorgeously comfy four beat canter. However one day they offered me a horse that was a competition horse. I didn't know then what that meant 🤣 he had an impressive big tolt but was very strong. I'd ridden him for an hour or so when he got a lot stronger and peed off with me in flying pace. He ran a while, realised he was alone, turned back sharply and I flew off onto some rocks. I was glad of my trekking horses after that.

This thread has had me in fits of laughter after a day I honestly wondered if I'm too old stupid or both to have just got another horse having dismounted 3 times in 2 days and my legs buckle on all occasions I dismount. I'm seriously thinking of digging a trench to walk the horse into so I can step off except in my case I'll end up under her trampled 🤣
I'm fetching me a bale of hay to descend upon at the very least tomorrow

I want a team of young riders that can be called on ,rather like runners in cricket ,for older no longer athletic folk . a) I could sit back and watch Bob. b) They would soon discover how we all became the old crocks they see us as,lol. PS Bob has suggested a similar thing for senior citizen horses, says he would love to see the expressions on a few younger horses shown a decent hedge!

I like this thread !

I’m def feeling old, knackered and past it - 4 weeks on from an awkward fall with sore (not broken) ribs, and soft tissue damage all along my right side. I’ve recovered well but still have lingering achy bits and still not riding. So to add to that I’m even porkier than normal. Contemplating being a dressage diva for a while, and having my fitter friend do the jumping!

I need someone to appear in rural Wales where I live, with a set of aircraft steps every time I need to dismount. It makes me wonder how the dear late queen was courteously lowered from her beloved ponies in her 90's

Those of you older than 60, I truly salute you if you ride alone without help! 👏

I have friends who trail hunted in their 70’s. I was 67 when I stopped. I do fun rides alone but don’t hack alone from the stables because of the roads. I’m sure there are many who are older than me and much more independent.
