people please.........

People think I go on about spelling and grammar, but I don't. The only time I raise it, is if someone is having a pompous go at me...then it's just evil fun.
And I like 'uphauled' very much...but not everyone realises I'm joking...I have had helpful HHOers correct me...

oo - I do love these posts.

In a minute there will be the old rant about how grammar and spelling pedants are intimidating the dyslexics of this world & how people don't choose to spell badly, etc, etc.

On the contrary - Most of the dyslexics I know make extra effort with their spelling. I'm afraid I do believe that a lot of the time poor spelling and grammar is down to sloppiness.

So there

Have you really got nothing else to post about than to pick on other peoples mistakes?

Personally I'd rather see a million posts with spelling mistakes about horses, than another one of these 'corrections'. As long as I can understand it, I couldn't give a flying f**k how its spelt!
Lighten up, try and accept other peoples mistakes. I bet there are some things that you do in RL that 'irritates' the hell out of some people, but you'd be rather peeved if people pointed them out to you all the time.
Sorry, I don't usually comment on posts like this, but I just find it rather rude

LOL.

As for baulk: I hold my hands up to that one, but it's one of those words I tend to say quite a lot but never write because it is quite 'slangy'. Well, I wouldn't write on the end of a child's piece of writing 'your spelling and grammar made me baulk' anyway.

[/ QUOTE ]

To write this wouldn't make much sense anyway, as 'to baulk' (can also be spelt 'balk') means 'to avoid or refuse', or 'to shirk or ignore' and 'your spelling made me avoid (refuse/shirk/ignore)' would be an odd thing to say!

I'm not too fussed about spelling but I can't be the only one here who finds it reallly irritating when someone types out a great long post without a single punctuation mark as its impossible to understand and that to me is a lot worse than spelling I mean at least use the odd full stop people!!

The world won't end if someone uses 'of' instead of 'have' - that is a mistake born of dialect, not ignorance!

[/ QUOTE ]

I disagree, whilst 'should of' or 'should've' spoken might be attributed to dialect, use of 'should of' in written English can only be attributed to ignorance. The positive aspect of not knowing everything is that we can all learn something. If one person after this thread has the confidence to use words like conformation, baulk, or even appalled and know that they have spelled them correctly then that is a good thing.

Of course mistakes can be made, but I imagine most of us would prefer not to make them.

(sits back waiting for literacy dissection and alternative 'spelt' to be thrown back at me, although I am firmly convinced that can only be a type of flour)

Because my brother is dyslexic I know what kinds of words dyslexic people tend to struggle with (helped by my teacher training/working with dyslexic learners). I know that often dyslexia is used as an excuse for poor spelling, and I also know that people like my brother go to extra lengths with their spelling. However, with words like 'conformation' which has a homophone - 'confirmation' - I can imagine it is incredibly difficult. As is obvious, confirmation and conformation were never meant to be homophones, but they have evolved that way because of dialect, which brings me back to my point about 'of' and 'have'.

The English language is very difficult to grasp, even for a lot of English people. We have a lot of homophones, 'silent' letters and down right stupid spelling rules. I'll take my stupid error in spelling the word 'baulk'. Well who thought it was a good idea to spell 'hawk' like that and 'baulk' like that!? That's one example of many words in the English language which take on a different spelling than other words with the same rime but different onset. No wonder people struggle. I can also understand 'hayledge' because so many words in English, including 'ledge' have that sound and are spelled '...ledge' not '...lage'. There are reasons English has developed the way it has and why there are so many silly spelling rules, but it doesn't make it any easier for people! My understanding of why people (including myself) make mistakes, does not stop me getting highly irritated by them. Perhaps this is a little bit like blaming the tree when you walk into it!

I am a lot more irritated by poor grammar than spelling mistakes. I'm not talking about a person's ability to use a semi-colon, but simple sentences to help readers. I know people say 'it's only a forum, we relax here, why should we spell properly or use correct grammar?', but I do actually find it quite difficult to read/understand posts with no commas/full stops AND spelling errors. If I have to go back to the start of a post in order to make sense of it, I don't bother because it's really quite difficult.

I am the first to admit that I have pulled people up before on their spelling and grammar, but it's usually when they have annoyed me or when I cannot understand their post at all.

haha I corrected someone on msn yesterday on knew instead of new and they went mad at me and said they were just doing shorthand...I jjust don't like bad grammar (or is it grammer...)

I disagree that conformation and confiRmation are homophones; I certainly pronounce them differently. And the same applies to baulk and hawk.
I am not irritated by either spelling or grammar...as long as I can understand the meaning. And people who spell badly, and pick a fight with me, are grist to my mill.

Well, that just echos my point about dialect. You may pronounce them differently but I bet many people who spell them incorrectly don't (and I include myself with baulk and hawk). I know I find it hard to notice the difference when I say both words out loud. I'm not making excuses for people; afterall, I say both words (confirmation and conformation) in a similar way but know the difference between their spellings.

I dont pronounce conformation or confirmation the same either.

Firefox is getting reinstalled in my computer tonight! I didn't know it had that function, I've been using the wonderous Internet explorer for too long now and it hasn't been helping me with my spelling! Damn Bill Gates, damn him to grammar hell!

haha or the tuba being pronounced chooba! My Dad always makes a point of saying "the Tuba" (I might just add that my sister plays it, it's not just a favourite word he likes and randomly sprouts out occasionally!)
