Please give your horse the benefit of the doubt - Muffin update

I'm on the lookout now for heavyweight combo rugs, to keep his neck as warm as possible in winter. Recommendations at the budget end of the market, anyone? I've never used a combo in my life!

.

Ebay - just keep an eye on what is going through and you will get an end of line, or out of season for a good price. What pad is it that you bought? I have just bought one that relieves pressure on the wither area so I am happy to review it for you when it arrives if it may help as it was £120!

I am so sorry to hear this, it's very upsetting to get such horrible news. I remember when I was told that my previous horse had an almost life ending case of Navicular after only ever being 1-2/10ths lame and it really took my breath away as I was unprepared for that level of findings; so make sure you look after yourself too.

Definitely get on eBay for rugs! You can get some bargains - hence why I have a shed full ?

The pad is a VIP, MSBMO, they come with strong recommendations at the moment. Just horribly expensive,!

So sorry to see this. But thank goodness you are so conscientious to spot the signs and check him out. Atleast you know what you are dealing with now and can hopefully tweak his work to suit so he lives a happy comfortable life.

Gutted for you, at least you can take some consolation from the fact you have his best interests at heart. Most people would have ignored him so he is lucky you listened.

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. I have a boy with severe neck arthritis too, along with many other problems, and, like you, had everyone look at him and tell me he was sound and just naughty. He was “sound” because he was lame in all 4 legs.
Rugs wise I like the all in one turnouts from Horseware as there isn’t a seam at the neck. It’s not detachable but I’m guessing you won’t need it to be. Some amigo ones in the sale, below, and plenty more available with a quick search. They do a Rambo version but much pricier, although I do find that the v front of the Rambo works well on narrow horses.

Re budget combo rugs - I find the derby house pro ones fit my tbs well. They are cheaply made but seem to last 2 or 3 years

Really sorry to read this, but at least he is living his best life with you. I echo what has been said above, he is a lucky boy to have you looking out for his best interests.

Really sorry to hear this ycbm, I was wondering how he was getting on.

Totally agree about trusting your gut instinct. I had several professionals tell me that Polly needed a good smack and she was being a cow. She wasn’t. But I had to force a vet to scan her, as I was told I was wasting my money.
I wasn’t. We found our answer.

I know you will continue to do right by him x

oh yes, i`m a great believer in warmth, sorry muffin, to hear you have problems, hope they can be managed so you can stay comfortable and do some ridden work

Sorry to hear about Muffin but we’ll done for trusting your gut and persevering to get to the bottom of it. Something I have found has helped my horse (not KS but incredibly tight muscles in the neck) is a pair of extra long hot water bottles sewn into a neck rug. So sorry to hear this. You have done well by him, so hope that you have a good time still ahead of you both.

Really sorry to hear this.

I’m guessing you and vet are assuming he flipped in training and hurt neck? I’m just curious what his bloodlines are and if arthritis could be related to malformation of C6/C7.

She said there's no malformation to be seen, so with four vertebrae involved we are thinking it has to have been a rotation fall. Of course horses can do it in the field, but it seems more likely it was when he was training over hurdles.

Sorry to read this , arthritis is a barsteward. Hope you manage to keep him pain free for as long as possible

I was in the same situation with Tudor a few years back: numerous professionals put it down to his age and a rather unpleasant teenage stage, when in reality he was a grade five idiopathic headshaker. I knew in my gut that wasn’t the case - he was too nice a horse to behave so abominably - so while it was devastating to get a diagnosis, it was also something of a relief!

On the upside, there are lots of horses with arthritis who are happy to do low-level work for years without issue, so long as they’re properly managed, and I’ll be keeping everything crossed that Muffin is one of them ??

Re. heavyweight combo turnout recommendations, I always used Shires on my ex-racer.
