I for one, can’t have enough pics and updates so I can live horses through HHO. I now have hardly any contact with horses..and it’s hard to cope with

If you ever find yourself in Sussex, you are more than welcome to come and see Dex!

It's amazing how different personalities teach us as much as we teach them. Sounds as if you have got a real partner there.

He will definitely teach me a lot, and teach me to unlearn a lot I'm sure!

You bought a good one there 😁

Thank you, I feel like he's in the same school class as Charlie, as they've both 'joined' HHO at the same time! 😂

Next year this thread will show you how far you have come

This is the plan! Almost like Facebook memories, but it's not showing me when I was slimmer, less skint and cosying up with my ex 😆

Right - Now they've both got names and joined HHO at the same time I think we need a "Dex" and "Charlie" thread so I don't have to go searching for the latest pics in two places. Living vicariously through others makes you very lazy!!!

Right, end of Week 2 summary. Dex has been smashing life, he practically drags me to 'scary' things to sniff them (sorry for the repeat photos photo thread people!), he's managing to keep a lid on it mostly at turnout time (he just switched to overnight turnout yesterday), comes to call which is always nice, he's been shown that it's okay if the horses in the other fields are coming/going/turned out first/last - I'm more and more happy with him every day and it looks like his canter might one day be rather comfortable! I've been basically just showing him some things around the yard and chilling/grooming with him. He has so many real itchy spots that he goes mad for, but weirdly for an ID he's not all that fussed about food...

Yesterday was lovely, I went out to poo pick and it was super sunny, he came up to investigate at the very top of the field, so we had scratches etc and then we just stood and chilled together for a good 30 minutes looking at the farm land around the field. He was snuffling and standing with me, at one point he had his head on my shoulder blowing hot air into my ear, I was stroking his face, there were a few yawns and a very relaxed face - then he followed me all the way down the field, being respectful of my space when I stopped and I then ditched the wheelbarrow and brought him in. It definitely made me realise how easy it would be to overlook moments like that if you have an agenda of what you need to get done at the yard or with the horse. It feels like he is trusting me and is more willing to relax when I'm there - so very happy ASBMO too!

What a wonderful report on his second week. Think he is just gold dust - or he has been here before!! Just noticed at the end of the video how huge his ears appear!!!

Thanks both, it definitely feels like it! I can’t believe I’ve been so lucky after what was really quite a risky buy!

It’s funny you say that, a lady at the yard said to me today that she likes him because he looks like a cross between a donkey and a moose 😂. I love big ears!

How lovely that he rolled right next to you, that he expressed his delight at rolling, then how he came back to check in with you.

Perfect!

Thank you, I love it when others see the little things that I'm seeing in him too - couldn't ask for more from him.

The test will be this PM whether he will let me bring him in as he'll have been out since 3pm, I should be there for 6pm and would like to work with him, but he's not been interrupted during turnout as yet. We'll see later on!

Dex would like everyone to know that he nearly met an untimely death this evening in the form of a YO driving the bobcat. He tried to be brave but decided it was best for the both of us if he got the hell out of there. Idiot owner on the end of the lead rope however didn’t recognise the urgency and danger of the situation and didn’t move so he was forced to find what was left of his brave pants in order to safely get to, and take solace in, the rapidly growing grass in his safe place.

Idiot owner also unbelieably, prior to this, took him to the wash bay which seemed a bit suspicious, but the hose then being gently running was about the limit - just about kept a lid on it, even got one wet toe for good measure, but made his protest well and truly known by leaving behind the biggest dump known to man. He almost started to walk with pride in his stride when the YO exclaimed that idiot owner may have a monster on her hands when he’s grown, if the size of his turd is anything to go by.

Being tied while idiot owner isn’t in sight is also a little above the tolerance limit right now, which is a little heart melting as idiot owner likes to think this means he feels secure and confident in her presence in some way. Equally heart melting was the trot to idiot owner and the little winny when being caught today. 😍

However, melt down aside, it’s important to note for Dex’s prides sake, that walking over poles in the school is a complete non-issue as is turning in/out. Yielding his hindquarters is also child’s play, yielding his shoulder is still a bit of an intrusion in his mind, picking up back feet is a slow work in progress and flicking the end of the lead rope over his back is taking the mick entirely, but an understanding has been reached about what is his space and what is mine, thankfully even during said meltdown. Still can’t believe how much he’s learnt in just 2 weeks!

Right. Need to stop looking at this thread as it’s making me think I want a youngster and I DO NOT WANT OR NEED ONE. Dex is lovely. What colour will he end up?

If you want to be discouraged then I am really the wrong person to be speaking to, I am so enjoying this whole process! Plus Adam has posted a few really nice looking youngsters since… just saying 😉

He will totally grey out I think, his sire is grey and I believe his mum was too although I’ve not seen her. I have my fingers crossed he’ll grey out slowly though 🤞🏼

Tough week in the life of me and Dex this week. On Friday I found sarcoids which you will have seen, yesterday he kicked me which is rather sore and today I have rope burned all my right hand which is really rather sore so, yes it’s just the life of having a baby, I am feeling a bit sorry for myself with my hand in a bowl of water.

He came to call, all excited down the field, but I didn’t realise that a table was on its side on the way in. He went to spin and leave, but corrected himself on the end of the rope which is usually the end of the story, but then he was shaking and wanting to go. I stood and tried to just get him to calm down but he decided no, he wanted safe space of the field. Span and legged it, skidded to a stop at the electric fence gate but then jumped it and broke that too. Was fine once in the field and I caught him no issue, but tried again (I still hadn’t realised the table was the issue) and he went to do it again so I let go as my hand was really sore. Thankfully the YM then helped and realised it was the table, put it back, and he just about got brave enough to make it in. Dogs kicked off then on the way in but apparently that’s way less scary than the table!

Life with a youngster isn’t always fun. Idiot owner will now be wearing gloves (got complacent as he’s been wonderful to bring in/out before now).

I'm very sorry about the sarcoids but I wouldn't worry about the rest, I got rope burned last year by an extremely aged mini Shetland so it's just one of those things. Did he kick you on purpose or was it just a brief panic / strop and you happened to be there? If this is the worst week you've had with him I still think you're doing extremely well! He's obviously got a really lovely nature and he trusts you (and those chunky legs.....I think he's wonderful!)

It was just a baby cow kick, we are still learning to pick up back feet and he was fine with a rope around them, but we have gone back to the rope now. It's all just normal having a baby horse things, I'm just going to have a bit of a woe is me hour then I'll be alright 🤣 he has got a lovely nature on the whole, he just need some more confidence which will hopefully come with time. He seems to be all legs at the moment,he resembles a moose a bit I have to admit!

ETA: I didn't realise the bruise photo would post so big, that's extremely unflattering!

And where were your gloves young lady!? 🙂.
I think he’ll have more difficult moments as he gets more confident, as you no doubt know, but he looks just the type to get over himself very quickly. Have loads of fun. I’m enjoying this thread, I love vicarious horse ownership

Glad you're ennjoying it! I keep thinking people will get bored of hearing about not a lot in the grand scheme of things 🤣
Yep, gloves, you only get complacent once! They ill certainly be dug out again.
Up to now he generally has gotten over himself pretty quick - usually when he goes to leave he gets to the end of the rope and corrects himself and then stands and gets over himself, or he'll try again but again stop when the rope doesn't move, but not this time - he was leaving at speed. I'm halfway between knowing he needs to settle in some more and is young, and also thinking that he is very clever and might need some more to keep his brian occupied. Not 100% sure yet.

All this behaviour will be in the past in a couple of months, he will suddenly click and that will be him, you are already his human from the way he came running down the field, ears all pricked! ♥️

I can't wait for the day when I look back on it and laugh I have to say! They do keep us on our toes, a point of learning that I cannot get complacent! It was very sweet, it's the second time he's done it now.

The difference is, from a home bred horse, you might not expect this kind of behaviour but to be honest he has probably been reared in a herd and plucked out now he is ready with minimal contact. So be kind to yourself! Your doing amazing and you have come a long way in a couple of weeks! He will get the hang of manners and how to behave 😊❤️
