Ah yes but I'd heard it waaaayyyy before that. Infact, I got quite upset about it and wanted it to be stopped but I eventually saw the err.. Funny side for want of a better word.

That was my understanding that it had been used before that for some time as an offensive term, and you say "Go on... mock us. Call us evangelists, taliban, we don't give two hoots because what matters is that the horses we save get us through the day... smiling and frankly that is all we need."

It's the first one that is coming up on a search, tried one for just 'taliban' in both NL and NL archive and that comes up with nothing earlier either. I know stuff was lost when we migrated to vbulletin but it seems odd that nothing at all is coming up.
 
Can you find threads that were removed? Sme of them got very nasty and that was even before I joined as a member.
 
Hmm. Well in my head anyway, it has been used for quite a few years. At the very least I heard it here first. As you do :D

Just did a google and actually..... It's used on mums net!!! So maybe I'm wrong it's not a HHO thing... Either that or it's caught on elsewhere...

I think if we Google we'll find it's wider than here and Mumsnet... uknchp as well. Oh, and trotonline, petsmoz.com and there are galleries of images of hooves...
 
Anyone offended by the word Taliban in this context clearly doesn't know what it means. If your brain sees horrid connotations when you hear the word then that is your own association - not the word Taliban.

Since the word 'taliban' means 'student' or 'seeker of knowledge' it's actually fairly accurate. I believe what you object to is the connotation it has in light of recent events.

No wonder country's are at war about religion, different cultures, oil, minerals etc, when H&H forum users take offence to a word which is applicable to the reason why posters search the bare footers knowledge. If we spent more time learning about different languages and cultures there would be less time to argue.

I do not condone what happened to the young girl, but sadly it is out of all of our hands.

It is ALL down to the West with constant meddling and playing Chess with peoples lives, trying to get them to adopt the Western Culture, it does not work.

I always believe that you sort the problems out with ones own Country first rather than trying to solve problems of another.
 
I feel a bit uncomfortable with the term being used in a 'jokey' way too, and I'm not even a 'barefooter'! I doubt very much that the person who originally used this term to describe the barefooters knew its true meaning!

There are a lot of overly sensitive people posting on this thread - if someone who has experienced that which Zoon has doesn't find it offensive, the rest of you and your pretensions really need to find something better to do.

Well, talk about getting a life, just got in from Solihull, I haven't been on HHO all day!

I didn't realise that 'taliban' means 'student'. I'm an ignorant old sod and should really know better and do my research before I open my big gob.

However, I doubt that the first thing that comes to mind when it's reported on the news that the 'taliban' hav eenforced Sharia law by stoning an adulterous woman to death, is a bunch of students wondering about the Hindu Kush!

I don't like it tbf (and have suggested so previously) and it certainly isn't a term I would ever use or feel comfortable using. I think that's my perogative even if there are more important things to worry about (I am probably worrying about them too ;) I do worry really well :p ) and I don't think I need to get a life or that I am being hugely ridiculous as some seem to think :o.
 
I have always loved that Taliban means seeker of knowledge when many think it's a term of insult language is a difficult tool sometimes.
 
How about people accept what the word 'taliban' actually means and recognise that they are responsible for their associations not the word itself! Barefoot taliban stays imo. Whatever next?
