riding in tracky bottoms or johds

Breeches or very rarely jeans, I hate seeing people riding in trackies. I'm not convinced that shiny trackies + saddle is necessarily safe either.

I own 2 pairs of trackies, 1 for the gym & paint splattered ones for mucking out (or painting) in.

I am totally scruffy, so nothing to do with how it looks, but I always ride in johds, as the one time I tried in jeans I got really sore legs where the seams are. Only time I wouldn't get changed out of jeans is if I was having a quick sit on bareback (but then again that makes your jeans minging, so I would still usually get changed into johds).

I even pull on johds just to muck out or go down to the field - they are easier to pull wellies on over without having lots of material wedged in, and wash and dry easily. Consequently, I do spend most of my non working time in johds.....great, practical items of clothing that they are!

If I'm planning to ride I always wear jodhs or breeches. I have occasionally ridden in jeans, leggings or hiking trousers if I've got on unexpectedly, or once or twice when all my jodhs are in the wash. I normally team my jodhs with a t-shirt, polo shirt, rugby top or fleece depending upon the weather. I wear smarter ones for lessons to show respect, the manky ones are saved for days when they will be under a coat and I'm riding alone in the evening!

The best riding outfit I ever saw though was when I went to view a horse and the girl was wearing a tiny triangle bikini top with hotpants and jodh boots.

I prefer riding in trackies (never chavvy or branded ones - usually just plain dark ones) or leggings as they keep me cooler and I feel more comfortable in them. I also like the fact that I can wear leggings to work etc and then hop straight onto my horse without having to go and squeeze myself into jodhpurs. I also find jods retain the horsey smell more so I feel self-conscious popping to the shop/getting petrol in them. I also find them stupidly expensive!

I ride in jods. Recently got some caldene sticky bum ones from robinsons in their sale

Although a few years ago I was working at a summer camp in the USA. It was 30C+ and very humid, so I rode in some thin adidas shorts, full chaps borrowed off a friend and my jod boots. Middle of nowhere so no one really saw

Im 35 and have been riding since I was 8... I can count the times Ive ridden wearing jeans or tracky bottoms on one hand. Usually its been an unplanned ride. I would never even school in the field at home without a pair of johds or breeches on and Id be mortified to hack out without the correct attire. By this I dont mean cream johds and shining boots just actual jodhpurs, johd boots and chaps.

99% of the time I'm in jods, if not then leggings. When I was a kid my mam wouldn't buy me jods as they were expensive and apparently I was fine in my trackies. I always wanted the proper kit and now have a bit of a thing about being properly kitted out it's good to be able to blame my mam for my riding gear shopping addiction!

I havent got any trackie bottoms any more, used to have but they were gym wear not riding wear, not convinced they would be very nice to ride in at all. I have ridden in jeans a few times over the years but never really found them comfy to ride in, plus I wouldnt ride in my nice (expensive!) current saddle in jeans.

Sweat pants are my favourite, the sort that are soft on the inside and straight down to a slim fit around the ankle. Otherwise I tend toward cheap and cheerful slightly too big or denim jods. Due to an ankle injury I also have 'special shoes' which are basically a type of trainer so I ride go those and half chaps. Must look bad to a lot of u. I do wear smart jods and colour co ordinated top to match my ponies attire for clinics and lessons!

Jobs or Breeches all the way. I have ridden in jeans and they are ok but not as comfortable as breeches. Never ridden in trackies except the winter when I wear thermals, breeches and trackies - its just too cold not to wear them!

I have never owned any form of tracksuit bottoms, but regularly ride in jeans, esp the skinny fit with lycra or jeggings, much cheaper than jods and as i live and work in a city i can transistion outfits as i travel to the yard.

I don't even own a pair of trackies!! My standard yard attire is an old pair of skinny jeans with long brown boots, I ride in them too.... The jeans are actually really comfy. Otherwise it's jodhs/breeches but I find the jeans more comfy for general wearing, and since I do chores etc as well as ride makes sense.

I only ever wear jobs when competing.
Im always in black or navy joggers.
I wear all the other proper equipment for safety.
But seen no problem with joggers,once I've got my boots and half chaps on they look the same any way.

Looking a bit scruffy but caring for your horse properly is better than the other way around.
Turning it into a fashion show with the horse not being the priority is wrong.

Wearing jods is hardly a fashion show or all the gear no idea is it
Nor do I see a correlation between whether you wear jeans or jods having an impact on how you look after your horse...

I've ridden in jeans trackies and jods.... Prefer jeans for everyday riding as can wear cheap fiver primary / tesco pairs! Jods never last for me, so keep them for lessons / clinics / trying new horses

I'm with you OP, I don't feel comfortable in anything but breeches, preferably with 'sticky bum'.
But then I started riding when we all wore hacking jackets most of the time!

I always used to ride in breeches/jods but found I was spending a fortune on expensive jods that weren't lasting 6months. Bought myself some plain black yoga pants, they looked very similar to jods once on and have lasted me over three years so far - cost half the price too.

I've just bought myself a couple of pairs of Premier Equine Breeches in the sale so will see how they last. I do prefer riding in breeches, but couldn't see the point in paying over the odds for smething that was going to be trashed anyway.

Never ridden in trackies, as they wouldn't go in my boots! Don't ride in jeans, although have done on occasions, as the seams dig into your legs, I find. So usually ride in jods or breeches, in winter with either suede or fleece lined full chaps.

Scruffy's not a new thing - 30 years ago I always wore jeans except when at a show. Jodhpurs are so much better now. When I started again I only had jeans with holes in for gardening or good ones I didn't want horsey so I went out and bought some jodhpurs and they were denim ones so kinda a compromise. I have two pairs and they wash and wash so I don't need to wear anything else.

I have a couple of pairs of full seat denim breeches, but the rest are full seat or I've recently discovered the comfort of pull on jodhpurs

Never tried riding in trackies- I sometimes wear them to muck out in if I'm not riding and don't want to get my jodhs dirty! Sometimes I ride in jeans but mostly just jods/breeches...

For the vast majority of the time when riding English, I wear jods. I have to really as I don't have my own horse, I am either in a lesson (which I would always wear jods to) or riding other people's privately owned horses, in which case I feel like it would be unprofessional to ride in anything else (even though no money changes hands, I kind of just exercise people I know or friends of friends horses etc but first impressions and all that).

Always wear jeans when riding western.

However, I tried riding in trackies recently and honestly, it was a revelation! So comfortable and never had a problem with them being slippery in the saddle. I have tried both the 'shiny' type (very similar to waterproof overtrousers) and they were very unflattering but did the job ok and the soft closer fitting ones with elastic ankles which were so comfy - will defo ride in these again when I get the chance (which isn't often).

The problem I find with the jods which I have are that with certain horse/saddle combinations, they give me horrible sores pretty much wherever there are seams. It's really weird because I ride two horses which share a saddle and on one horse I always get sores and one I haven't ever but a different saddle on the horse which does give me sores makes the world of difference (but it is her show saddle so not for every day use).

I should probably get some new jods but it's hard to justify the expense when I don't ride all that regularly/will soon be finishing uni/want to travel/don't have any money for riding anyway.

I always wear breeches. I still have the same delight everyday I pop the on as I did as a kid when I learnt to ride. I feel like a proper rider. ( rubbish as I maybe!) I always wear long leather boots or boots & gaiters. I like to look smart when I ride, not that anyone really sees me. I keep my horses smart so like to mirror them.
They were invented for a purpose and stop your legs being nipped/rubbed. I think trackies & jeans look scruffy and would not be comfy to ride in.
Each to their own I suppose.

Been riding for 45 years from the era of hair nets and hacking jackets, so its a positive delight now to ride in jeans. I only wear breeches for schooling and jeans are perfect for bombing around the countryside.
