it was on another thread the other day i noticed people discussing this...

Im 35 and have been riding since I was 8... I can count the times Ive ridden wearing jeans or tracky bottoms on one hand. Usually its been an unplanned ride. I would never even school in the field at home without a pair of johds or breeches on and Id be mortified to hack out without the correct attire. By this I dont mean cream johds and shining boots:p just actual jodhpurs, johd boots and chaps.

Is it a younger generation thing to regularly ride in tracky bottoms? I see it more and more:o Each to their own.. just pondering.

Please call me young! ;)Usually ride in traky bottoms, unless doing a serious, long (over 2.5 hrs) or fast piece of work then wear riding tights. Don't give fig what others deem to be correct atire, as long as safe, practicable & comfy.

For everyday riding/schooling i tend to ride in stretchy jeans and long boots (the chunky ariat style ones). This is only because i have so many pairs of jeans it is easier to throw them on! If i am organised enough to get some jods through the wash then I may make an effort and wear jods.

If i was doing a clinic or training day then would def wear jods.

I flatwork school and jump at home in flared jeans. I work ride racehorses in jeans with chaps over the top and rub my knees raw lol! As much as I hate them normally I do love riding in skinny jeans - but I will always wear chaps with them as I hate my legs and it breaks them up a little.

I hate wearing trackies to ride in, I just don't find them comfey.

I work in at shows in a pair of baggy cargo trews overtop of my beige jodhs- but that's understandable lol!

And in winter - thermals, jeans, padded waterproof trousers all the way! Hehe!

This! I actually prefer riding in jeans than jods as I find most of them too tight round the knee for me :)

I used to ride in trackies in the winter when it was very cold/damp, but I'd wear them over jods. I'd actually forgotten about that, I may have to start it up again...
Anyway, I prefer to ride/see people in riding gear, but doesn't bother me too much either way.

I think I might have ridden in jeans three or four times? I remember hopping up in jeans when I got a chance to try a Western saddle on my horse and just happened to be wearing jeans as I wasn't expecting to ride... probably looked better than jodhs given the tack :)

I don't own tracky bottoms :p

I have a selection of jodhs, from cool ones for summer to very warm ones for riding in -10 ;)

I would find jeans excruciatingly uncomfortable for anything more than a 10 min potter, the seams are all in the wrong places!

I do also have a pair of riding trousers (the slightly bootcut HKM ones) which are a total vanity buy... the one time I wore them to a beach ride, I got the most horrendous blisters from the stirrup leathers... so now I just wear them to horsey events where I'm not riding :o

I only really ride in my running kit +helmet at the moment. On days when I'm schooling the ponies its the only chance I get to jog without my toddler in a pushchair so usually mix up jogging and riding. However massively regret hopping on in 3/4 leggings and using stirrups. Ouch. If I'm not going to run I like wearing nice thick jodhs :)

Just call me a chav (though this would be a first). If you'd ever tried riding tights you'd never call jods comfy, that dreadful seam over the knee. At least when I'm out I use high viz & a secured helmet, more than lots of riders around here in jods;)

No it isn't OP! I'm considerably older than you and, although I don't ride in trackies, I do ride in jeans-style leggings a lot, particularly in the summer as I find them cooler. They are also considerable cheaper than a decent pair of breeches (which is my first choice) and I don't mind getting them clarted up mucking out or poo picking before or after riding.

I have a pair that are 15 yrs old (they have been redundant for 7 of them) but what clothes these days last being worn like that! I am back wearing and washing them every other day.

The old fashioned ones weren't comfortable as the material had no Lycra or anything but the new ones ie 20 years ago onwards lol are fine IMO.

I can also count the number of times I've ridden in jeans - this was during holidays, in a Western saddle. But jeans are firmer than tracky bottoms.

I can't bring myself (psychologically speaking) to wear tracky bottoms... they are too baggy, and I'm afraid that I'd slide all over the place as my bum has no grip.

I also have more breeches than jeans which makes any "casual day" either out or in the office bad for me if I forgot to wash the few pairs of jeans I have...

Call me a chav if you want but I ride in jeans all the time and in winter sometimes wear joggers as they are warmer. Only wear jods when I really have to as personally I think that if your over a size 8/10 or don't have well toned legs/bum then jodhpurs are not exactly flattering!!
Also find jeans more comfy as I wear hipsters.

If you'd ever tried riding tights you'd never call jods comfy,

I count these in with my jodhs, but wouldn't wear them day to day as I'd only snag them on a fence or gate. I save the expensive Equetech ones for proper long rides :)

Sometimes if I've been pottering about in my trackies/joggers and the urge to ride comes on, I just hop on in them (as you can see in my picture :D).
But if I get up with the intent to ride then as long as I have some jodhpurs clean then I wear them, if not its usually leggings or tights.

*Goes and sits on the chav step* :o

i should perhaps admit i spend 90% of my time out of the saddle in tracky bottoms - im usually training/running/walking dogs:p but i still traipse round tesco in them too.

I always ride in breeches. Never ridden in jeans - the seams would rub you raw surely? Tracky bottoms - can't imagine they give you much support or stability in the saddle, I would never ride in them myself but each to their own :)

OP, I am the same age as you and have also been riding since 8.

I have never ridden in tracky bottoms, but I did go through a stage of riding in jeans and short chaps for a few months.

Now always ride in jodhs.

The best combo a few years back was jeans and Doc Martin boots, but that is as inventive as I get really!

I make a real effort to always look smart when I'm on the yard, so that means that if I'm riding I'm in clean breeches or jodhpurs, "every day" boots (a pair of long black Ariat Bromonts, with a pair of Broginis for competing) and something smart on top like a rugby shirt and gilet. If I'm teaching or not riding for any reason then it's usually fitted jeans and Dubarrys, and if it's 4am and I'm mucking out I'm in normal "riding" gear with wellies on rather than trashing my boots.

I wouldn't ever ride in tracksuit bottoms, but that's just personal preference.

I think it's important for me to be smart as I represent the yard, and my yard is smart. I don't want to let it down. I worked for a woman who had a stunning yard, but worked in tracksuit bottoms, wellies or trainers and oversize hoodies. People would come to look round and ask me about the yard rather than her, assuming she was the groom as I was dressed more smartly.

First impressions count for a lot, and I need people to give me their money!

I don't have any problem with people riding in whatever they want to wear though. Each to their own and it doesn't make a difference to me at all.

I wear either jods or trackies, I couldn't care less what people think as long as I am comfy & my horses are happy thats all that matters. It woudln't bother me if someone wanted to ride in a bikini it's their choice to have pinch marks from the stirrups :p

Trackies or jeans or sometimes leggings - I have a pair of jeans that are great to ride in and have never rubbed whereas jods have a tendency to rub round my ankles? Dont know why lol maybe its because i have very boney ankles? I'd never go to a lesson wearing my jeans or Trackies though, guess I'd better join the chav step :(
