riding tights / johds ?

They are pretty much what they say on the tin tbh! Tights with no feet, often no side seam or zip/button fastening, sometimes with knee patches or a full seat. Obv thicker than tights, sometimes have a slight sheen, but stretchier than regular jods. Kerrits are a popular make. Hth!

thank you! Bit like thicker leggings with knee patches then?..hhmmm... ideal for stretching over growing midrif!

Very stretchy, but you can feel very 'exposed' wearing them - they don't do much for cellulite...! Very comfy to rife in though.

I've just bought some of the Kerrits tights and they're the comfiest things in the world! SO much comfier than normal jods, the waistbands are really soft and stretchy so dont cut in like some jods/breeches. Think Kerrits is all I'll buy from now on.

Endurance peeps like riding tights - they allow you to ride long distances without chafing.

Riding tights is really an American term as the original specialist, endurance ones came from the US/Canada.

As a cheaper option, go into a SportsDirect.Com shop and pick up some cycling tights - same thing but cheaper;)

they are mega-comfy. i was a bit wary, as i'm used to Pikeur and Cavallo breeches, but i love the riding tights. the winter-weight ones are really cosy, the tailoring on all of them is very good (i didn't realise this until i put a pair on in the dark the other morning back-to-front, and discovered that they're really carefully shaped, they aren't like tights in that respect!)
i love the super-stickyness of the full-seat styles too, this is something the Americans are a lot farther ahead of us on, they call it 'tight in the tack' and as far as i'm concerned, it if lessens the chances of me getting dropped and ending up back on crutches for months (i still don't trust my rebuilt knee) then it's worth it.
if you do lots of yard duties as well as riding they're fantastic, really stretchy and easy to work in, must admit my denim Cavallos, although lush, are not super-comfy for yard work, and i cba to change into different clothes just for riding in.
very highly recommend the Kerrits, no going back for me!

Riding tights = American for breeches with stretchy waistbands, generally of the warm variety

I have a pair of ariat winter thermal full seat ones, and they are the mutts nuts!

They don't look like they'd be very flattering for people like me with a fat bum! :o

It depends on the fabric and the cut - some of them have much firmer fabric than others. If they still make them I think the Irideon Cadence breeches are pretty supportive. My fleece lined Boinks are so thick, despite being very stretchy, that they definitely do not show lumps and bumps :D

They do look more like running 'leggings' but are def more comfy than jodhs anyday. I have two pairs or Irideon ones which are extra thin, but I like the sound of the fleecy ones.

My husband thinks they are more flattering than regular cotton jodhs somehowbut I only have cheap ones of those (Shires, Dublin etc) so not much of a comparison.

I have been looking for some warm full seat breeches/over trousers and i see all these are from USA, have you peeps that have ordered from kerrits etc had them sent over ok ? i am not sure about ordering clothing from outside the UK because of the sizing and how long they take to come over etc has it worked all OK because they do look good

Kerilli, did you buy online or call them to have them shipped here? I want the really, really sticky ones and they don't seem to be for sale in the UK at the moment?

i buy them direct off the kerrits.com website, as Three Lows didn't have any idea of stock when I rang, or of when the next batch was arriving, that was ages ago though so they may well be better stocked now!
i have the ultra-sticky ones and they're amazing. first time i got into the car with them on, you know when you sit down and then swivel your legs in... i couldn't swivel at all, was literally stuck to the seat the way i'd landed. THAT convinced me! hanging right out the side door on a daft hyperreactive youngster and then miraculously finding myself back in the middle just after i'd thought "oh ****, i'm a goner" was also very convincing!

midi, do you really think they're expensive? my Pikeur and Cavallo sticky-bums cost £140+ a pair. the Kerrits Channel Rib Flex Tight Fullseats, my favourites, are $99 = £63. i think that's cheap for full seat sticky-bums!
the Sit Tight Supremes (winter weight ultra-sticky-bums) are the most expensive, $109, which is £70. i think that's very reasonable considering the cut, quality, comfort, and stickyness!

even more ouch at the other brands haha!
yes I do but I've only ever had cheapy brands, most i've ever paid is the 2 for 1 deal that derby house had for their jodphurs.

I guess if they last for years its justified lol? I think the word "tights" makes me think they'll fall to pieces!

Right. I'm sold. I'm going to order some of the super duper sticky ones.

I could do with some extra stickability at the moment. I know that Nitty is going to do one of her aires above the ground moments with me on soon. It is only a matter of time. She can't carry on being as good as she has been and I am not exactly mrs stickability at the best of times so every little helps!

I wish I'd known about them when I was still riding two year olds for work!! :D

if you want winter super sticky look no further than the mountain horse polar overtrousers..... Serious stickability and toasty warm!

I had them when I was working. clearly my stickability is severely lacking as I'm sure I hit the deck more than once in them ( I don't think I was helped by the fact I was backing yearlings I guess but still..) :o I must be the most useless pleb in the world when it comes to sitting tight!

if the over-trousers are anything like the Musto ones, they don't help at all, because they're bulky and move over the layer underneath, which is the last thing you want. you want a tight-fitting, sticky layer between you and the saddle imho. since your weight moving even, say, 6" to the side can be enough to send you out of the side door on some horses, if there's a few inches of movement in the layers, that can be enough to start the inexorable exit... ;) ;)
says the voice of bitter experience... ;) ;)

Haven't had Musto ones so don't know but perhaps. I think my utter uselessness is probably the problem and nothing will save me but hey, it's worth a go! I happen to think they're very reasonably priced so am happy to give it a shot!

I usually tip off over the left shoulder. Actually, I ALWAYS, tip off over the left shoulder. Very frustrating. Now I am a smashed up crock (thanks work horsie) I have to try not to come a cropper too often as it leaves me unable to walk for two days after. Even if it is a nothing little fall. And then OH tells me off and everyone laughs at me and it hurts!

Are they hard wearing with yard stuff? I tend to buy cheapo jods - well 40 squid - and after a few months of riding 2 - 4 a day and mucking out 8 the seams in the crotch tend to split :/ even had one pair do it as the vet legged me up to ride for a vetting :o cue much embarassment! Lol
So just wondering how durable they are?
