Rug clip caught in fence

Got a real fright tonight when I went to catch the horses. My daughters little pony was waiting at the gate but my boy was nowhere to be seen, eventually found him (using the light from my phone) attached to the wire fence by the clips of his rug. Luckily he had not panicked and I was able to unclip him. The fencing is tornado so very strong and the electric along the top must have run out of power. Am now paranoid that this could happen again and have a worse outcome. Was thinking of using gaffer tape over the clips? Does anyone have a solution? Thanks.

A friend got home from work to find her son's pony attached to the fence by his rug clips - she reckoned by the amount of droppings that he'd been standing there most of the day :(

My solution is not to use rugs with trigger clips on them - they really worry me :(

When you do them up make sure the rounded part is to the outside so that the clip goes towards the inside, if that makes sense. I had one do the same except he ran off followed by the tape, luckily he stopped and let me undo him, I always make sure they are done up so it cannot happen again.

Shame the rug companies can't put a Velcro flap over these clips as it sounds like a common problem? Thanks for the replies everyone.

I agree, turn the clips towards the horse.

However - before replacing them all with buckles, you should know the only time I've ever seen my horse stuck on anything was in her stable. Her stable rug has T-buckles and she had get that caught, and then managed to twist it up so she couldn't get free. I no longer use haynets; but never have a problem with clips so long as they are turned towards the horse.

Buckles not safe either, fence and horse unscathed...

Pretty sure I did have clips facing the horse? Don't know how he's done it but will get a Velcro flap sown on I think. Love the green-legged rug wrecker!

Yes think you're right. Will get my saddler attach buckles. New rug as well - typical!

Does the strap not have both?
Mine have the clips but when they break I put he strap through the triangle and buckle it a little looser.
Mostly I ensure the clips are done up to the inside so it can't happen.

What make of rug is it? I have the Shires Typhoons and I take the clips off and thread the strap through the rings. A bit tricky as they are triangle shaped but saves any accidents with youngsters.
Sorry seem to have cross posted with cheeryp

Rug doesn't have another option (it's the Premier Equine buster trio). Only second time I've used rug have previously used Weatherbeeta's on this particular horse.

Of course...a Paint...should've guessed;) (She's lovely anyway, despite the innocent 'what-me-a-rug-wrecker?' look:)) Like the blue eye:)

She told me it spontaneously fell apart

It's Terramycin spray for mud fever by the way. Very effective but the side effect is that everyone in the world will ask why your horse has green legs. She doesn't now tho as its cleared it up

Thanks, I've only had her about a month and I didn't know she had a blue eye when I went to view or I wouldn't have gone, which was lucky as I love it now!:D

My pony did this too when I was younger - luckily just stood there no problem until we free'd him!

Pretty anal about clipping the clips in now!

I hate those clips too. I try and avoid rugs with them, but sometimes have to have them (sweet itch hoodies). I hate turning the clips to the inside on them as there is no padding and the horse gets a small lump pressing into it's chest all day.. Its the thing I hate most about Rambo rugs - especially having horses with big shoulders that I could do with being able to adjust in rugs.

Rug manufacturers take note - we don't want clips!! Buckles worked well for years.

As an aside, I have one horse who regularly gets his shoes stuck in fences too.

I

I won't have wire anywhere near the horses. To many things to go badly wrong. I have also seen a horse attached to fence by it's shoe.

My yearling got attached to the fence last week, also brand new rug, he ripped the whole chest strap off, I found it clipped to the fence

my little mare delights in tearing the front out of any rug regardless of the clip, buckle or any other design of fastening, our fencing is entirely electric and always live but the little toad has worked out that it does not zap her when she has a rug on :o

Did you see that (very expensive) rug that doesn't prevent them getting a shock? I am thinking of utilising the idea by adding some elec tape to the outside and inside of my rug wreckers rugs as its safer than her getting caught in the fence.

The Amigo Lite has buckles and Chloe tore hers clean off on (I assume) the fence. Luckily I found the buckle in the field and have a sewing machine. Turned out some tit had dislodged the earth on my electric fence when he was tidying up on his side of the fence.

So, buckles no good. Clips no good. Superglue it is, then!!
