Rug preference- neck /no neck?

So all you lovely people, I am about to buy a new set of winter rugs as my old ones are looking rather tired and my mare has grown out of her hand-me-downs.
Do you prefer a neck on a rug or not? Most of the ones I have are combos but I don't think the necks really ever fit properly. Obviously I'd like some sort of neck for turnout since she's a muddy beast.
Also if anybody has any reviews of the four seasons boots of le mieux for drying legs overnight?

Premier Equine with detachable neck. I rarely use the neck part (handful of times last winter when it was really rotten) as I like my horses to have manes at the end of winter and they arent going to melt without one!
 
I prefer detachable neck covers, then you can make the choice. I only have one with a fixed neck cover and that only gets used in the coldest wettest windyest winter weather, and that was one I was given.
 
I have both but avoid the ones with necks unless it is exceptionally cold and wet. I don't think they are good for horses as they compress the gullet when they are grazing.
 
Detachable necks for me too. I prefer the PE ones (which fit onto my Rambo rugs) as they are much roomier and leave the mane intact. Unless it is very wet and windy I don't put the neck cover on and always flip them back when they are in their stable at night.
 
I only have combos for my heavier turnout rugs (medium weight are enough for mine), and detachable for the light turnouts and stables rugs, where you tend to need more flexibility.
 
One has detachable necks the other has no neck because he gets skin infections when he gets a sweaty neck from having combo's on. Reason why he is hogged too
 
L-MW rugs are no necks usually.
HW with detatchable.

I'd generally only use neck covers in really rotten weather
 
Detachable necks here too. I only put the necks on if it's really cold or wet. I tend to let their manes grow a bit over the winter so they have home-grown umbrellas on ;)

I have a collection of necks which are all quite generous sizes so they don't rub. Plus having more necks than rugs means you can wash them regularly and always have a clean dry one to put on :)
 
I prefer no neck but sometimes the weather can be too horrible to send them out like that so any replacement rugs I've bought have had detachable necks so that I can have the option. It's always no necks when stabled unless sever minus temps where the water buckets in the stables have frozen during the day. Can't comment on the drying boots as any I have tried my gelding just removes once he's left alone, the turnout boots stay on oddly enough.
 
Necks, always! I hate filthy muddy manes and don't have time in winter for loads of grooming. If you could get full leg rugs I'd use those! Cover as much as possible of the dirty hippo type creatures ;)
 
I use rugs to keep my horses dry, not clean, so I do what the horses prefer. The cob HATES having her long mane trapped under a rug, so she doesn't have a neck, unless that is the only dry rug available. The Draft mare detests getting rained on, so even her no fill rug has a neck.
 
My draft came with a lovely rug with a neck on it - which he hates. In fact he isn't a fan of rugs full stop so they only go on when it looks like its going to be wet, cold and very miserable.

The mare is a funny fit for most rugs. I have a stash under the spare bed which aren't great fits, so she always get a detachable neck because otherwise they tend to strangle her if they come on an all-in-one.
 
My gelding lives out all winter and his neck is usually fully clipped, so for the colder months he wears a full neck. I prefer a half neck though as the full neck rubs his mane and with no neck the rain runs down his shoulders. Any I have with full necks are detachable so it's easy enough to take it off if it's mild.
 
I have a Rambo Duo with detachable neck. The neck just goes on if it's raining or if she's freshly clipped and likely to feel the cold on her neck. I do prefer to keep her neck bare if possible otherwise her mane falls out. Fortunately it's not really muddy at my yard.
 
I always go for no necks as I can't stand them rubbing out my horses' manes, especially when my mare's looks like this.

My old boy does have one 300 gram with a detachable neck though, although it's still in the packaging at the moment because last winter was so mild. He also has some old heavyweight combos stashed away somewhere from my first few years with him, when I was one of those horse owners who worried about the possibility of him melting in the rain! :D

I make my own neck covers in very light stretchy material lined with satin that dries quickly if it gets wet only trouble is until they have been washed a few times they can leak colour. The ponies have huge manes so they dont get wet necks and they are relatively loose so they dont lose mane hair. Bought a combo fly rug that immediately choppped her mane off
 
No neck. Unless like other say it's absolutely horrendous then they get neck covers on. All Stable rugs have no necks.
 
I personally prefer no necks but use necks on my horse as his mane is so thick it's a nightmare once it sees mud!
 
My TB has less of a main with no rug on most the summer compared to with a full neck most winter.
He doesn't like getting wet and gets cold easily when wet so most of mine are full neck to keep all of him dry.
I have a 100g detachable and a LW with no neck but all my thicker ones have necks.

MW has a detachable neck, but I only really take the neck off in spring/autumn when its a bit nicer weather
LW has no neck
 
Bucking the trend....

MW with full neck in the depths of winter - is actually better for full maned (nearly knee length) fuzzy, better than no necks (of most sorts) that can remove mane a bit just in front of the withers..
LW & rain sheets with no necks tho as only on for short periods.

Grumble pants is hunter clipped through winter and still has a smart pulled mane so she lives in necks as i feel a meanie if she doesnt. We also use a full necked no fill for miserable summer days if its the day before competition. I've never had an issue with necks on rugs - ironically last winter it was the chest guard that ruined her mane
 
No necks through most of spring/summer/autumn - but necks during winter as mine are clipped and have pulled manes, which doesn't leave them with a lot of protection. I like the shape of PE rugs but they do lose some mane at the wither - hey ho, I don't mind too much as we don't show, and all the eventers / hunters I see out have lost the same bit so can't imagine we lose points over it. The little ponies don't have necks as they have a lot of mane and aren't clipped.
 
I have detachable necks. She wears neck in winter to go out most days. Doesn't make a difference to her mane being rubbed as hers only gets rubbed at the base (about 3") by the actual rug. I have tried loads of different brands with fixed/detachable/no neck and nothing makes a difference. Fal detach is definitely the best for her and this year the patch was only thin not gone.
