I saw on another thread you are all talking about your rugs that use liners

talk to me about them

as Levi is in need of some new turns outs (all of his are second or third hand and at the end of their lives)

so looking in to the liner idea

he is a TB so would the withers be an issue?

do they do the outer shells in combo??

brands you recommend?

brands to stay away from?

or should i be avoiding the liner idea all together :)
 
I use them with Rambos - I like the rambo outers because they just last forever. However, you could use them with any outer rug really - when I'm being lazy I don't attach the liners to the front of the rug, just clip the back onto the fillet string Ds and they don't move - mine really like rolling and they are always still in place when I catch in.

I do think it's better than having zillions of rugs, you can buy a really good quality outer and use it all year round. Plus the liners are so light and easy to wash and keep clean.
 
I started with the outers and liners with Premier Equine - but while I don't dislike their rugs, they don't suit either of my girls very well. I now use the PE liners under a Amigo rug on my older mare and under a WB rug on my arab mare.

Because I use the liners not with their "proper" outers, they don't have the d-rings in place on the outer to link the front of the liner to. But I have never (touch wood!) had a problem with the liners moving at all. I just do up the front straps (at the horses chest) and clip the triggers hooks at the back of the liner to the d-rings on whatever rug I am using. The only time I have lost a liner is if I have forgotten to connect the trigger hooks to the d-rings!

I do like being able to change the liner regularly so the horses have a clean layer on them.
 
Got a Rambo Duo in a sale in the summer when mare went up a size in rug. Love that can easily change different weights of liners as the winter's progressed, and had a couple of the Amigo Mio stable rugs that I can swap in when I want to wash the proper Duo liners. Duo is 100gm outer, so will look to get a 0g sheet at some point for the wet summer days, but really love the flexibility and that i can wash the liners as and when I want, and just 1x outer for her for spring/autumn + winter rugs for professional cleaning. Love Rambo quality, and this makes a much more affordable solution to 2-3 different weight rugs
 
I've got the Amigo outers, they do a half neck which is good for horses with high withers. TBH most stable rugs sit nicely underneath them, I've got three liners for two horses I can use in combination (1 x 100gm, 1 x 200gm and 1 x 300gm) and if I need another thinner one one I use a thing quilted stable rug I have had for years. I only usually fix the liner to the top rug by the fillet string clips, like the others above I don't find I need anything else, they all sit quite well.
The only criticism I have is it is a faff to change them - take off top rug, take off liner, swap for a different liner and then replace top rug....x 2 for mine. I have had a lot of that to do this winter. But the liners wash well in a large domestic washing machine so that's a benefit
 
I used a Rambo supreme (0g outer, plus liners) on my TB. Fitted her well, and liked the fact that the liners are easy to wash and change out. Never leaked, never slipped, no rubbing - in fact her coat always shone under the rug.

I use the same rug on my cob, and it's still looking great after a fair few winters.

Tried PE on my TB, but sold them on, as they were so heavy she started to object to them going on. She was a delicate flower though!
 
I love liners - they are so easy to keep clean and they stop the outer rug getting gross and sticky underneath. They also seem to help stop rubbing. I use 100g PE liners with a range of outers - mainly cheap n cheerful Ruggles or Swish rugs. I don't need to buy heavyweight outer rugs anymore I just have medium weight, 50g and 0g rugs. I have a pair of liners so I can take one off to wash and put the other one on (although they do dry very quickly I have to say).
 
I have a random 100g liner underneath my boys PE buster. It has a front chest strap and two under belly straps and two rings at the back which i just attached the main rugs fillet 'string' clips too. Works perfectly so when PE had 40% off liners I brought a 100g liner in the 6'9 and that goes nicely under the mares weatherbeeta (first tried it last night actually) the PE liner has two front chest velcro straps and two clips at the back but no belly straps so chest straps and clips attached to the fillet string rings. Both stayed in place last night perfectly so very happy. They will have them on tonight again.

Reason I brought the PE liner is because at some point the mare will have her own PE turnout ... Oh this is all about turnouts, not sure if thats relevant to your question? I dont stable or even when I did i didnt do stable rugs.
 
Can any of you lovely lot send me links to the ones you are using as there is just a large variation between them all

i think i shall be avoiding PE


does any one make the outer shell in a combo any one know? doesnt have to be a 0g outer shell could be a 100g

Why would you avoid PE?
 
I have PE rugs and liners for my two. They're the same size in rugs so by buying a range of different weights of outers, I can makes all sorts of weight combinations. Each has a lightweight, then A has a 100g and M has a 200gm turnout. With a 100g and a 200g liner I can have them both in anything from 0g to 300g at any one time which is plenty warm enough for them. I'd need at least 8 rugs to achieve this separately but can do it with 4 rugs and 2 liners.
0g =each in 0g rug
100g =M in a 0g rug + 100g liner, A in 100g rug
200g =M in 200g rug , A in 100g rug +100g liner
300g = M in 200g rug + 100g liner, A in 100g rug + 200g liner

They spend most of the winter in 200g so the 200g liner is usually going begging so I can also use the 200g liner with 0g outer as a spare if they break one.

Although I use it with either no liner or a 100g liner - my horse would cook if I used 300g!

I also have the supreme 0g, but can't find a link for that one - great in spring/autumn, and good with 100g liner for the more frosty days.

You can add liners to that (I don't, horse doesn't need).

Although they are pricey - mine have done several winters - I just wash them with a hose after the winter ready to use next year. I don't get mine cleaned as I think it affects how waterproof they are.
 
I have PE but when they need replacing I won't be getting more; they have totally lost plot quality wise since they went all fashion and season colours plus they are on the heavy side.

My friend deals in second-hand rugs so I'm trying a few options to see how me and the horse like them.

Here's a rambo duo that's a bit cheaper and comes with 2 liners. I would have bought one like this except my budget sadly didn't stretch that far!

I bought a rhino rug at the beginning of this winter after my PE one started leaking, and am very happy with it! I want to get some liners for it but haven't yet. I know that the horseware liners can be used with any horseware rug (Amigo, Rhino, Rambo...) but I think that Rambo are the only ones you can buy in combination with the liners, with the others I think you have to buy them separately...
 
Weatherbeeta do a 100g Turnout with liners. Can't think of the actual name of it but used to be grey outer with red binding and red liners... Tri-star maybe?
More budgety Shires do one aswell which looks nice, oh and Masta! In fact I just recently got my little companion pony the masta one but with no liners so can't comment on them!
 
I have a masta climeatemasta with liners. The velcro to attach the liners can be fiddly as its velcro pockets at the front on the neck and shoulders, but on the whole a good hard wearing rug and the liners are machine washable.

Never found them heavy, the outer is a 100g full neck.

Weatherbeeta do combo rugs for a start, but other makes do as well, just Google. Buy any combo rug and stick any make of rug liner under it. That's the beauty of them. They stay put under any make or neckline of rug.
 
weatherbeeta do a brillant 100g outer rug at a fraction of the cost of the other big brands. Really pleased with how it fits my TB.

My only gripe would be the liners that work with the rug are not so great. They're too deep/ long in comparison to the rug and therefore get wet and muddy! Not a problem though as PE liners fit the WB outer really well too!
 
I use Rambo rugs & liners,love them & well worth the money. He’s a high withered TB & never had rubs but I do always use a silky rug bib. The liners are so light,wash brilliantly & dry really quickly.
I did buy the new Weatherbeeta version for a new horse last winter & was very impressed with that as well, I sold it on though as it rubbed her chest & shoulders,which a rug bib would’ve solved but I couldn’t get her to keep the rug bib on,went back to ruggles for her as they fit her well but unfortunately they don’t do a liner system.
 
Just bought my high withered dinky flat TB a rambo duo to replace his Amigos as there were a bit tired after 7 years, and it is superb, lighter, liners easy to use and wash, fits him superb and he is much warmer in it than the old ones
